    Channel estimation and signal enhancement for DS-CDMA systems

    This dissertation focuses on topics of Bayesian-based multiuser detection, space-time (S-T) transceiver design, and S-T channel parameter estimation for direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) systems. Using the Bayesian framework, various linear and simplified nonlinear multiuser detectors are proposed, and their performances are analyzed. The simplified non-linear Bayesian solutions can bridge the performance gap between sub-optimal linear multiuser detectors and the optimum multiuser detector. To further improve the system capacity and performance, S-T transceiver design approaches with complexity constraint are investigated. Novel S-T receivers of low-complexity that jointly use the temporal code-signature and the spatial signature are proposed. Our solutions, which lead to generalized near-far resistant S-T RAKE receivers, achieve better interference suppression than the existing S-T RAKE receivers. From transmitter side, we also proposed a transmit diversity (TD) technique in combination with differential detection for the DS-CDMA systems. It is shown that the proposed S-T TD scheme in combination with minimum variance distortionless response transceiver (STTD+MVDR) is near-far resistant and outperforms the conventional STTD and matched filter based (STTD+MF) transceiver scheme. Obtaining channel state information (CSI) is instrumental to optimum S-T transceiver design in wireless systems. Another major focus of this dissertation is to estimate the S-T channel parameters. We proposed an asymptotic, joint maximum likelihood (ML) method of estimating multipath channel parameters for DS-CDMA systems. An iterative estimator is proposed to further simplify the computation. Analytical and simulation results show that the iterative estimation scheme is near-far resistant for both time delays and DOAs. And it reaches the corresponding CRBs after a few iterations

    Space-time processing for wireless mobile communications

    Intersymbol interference (ISI) and co-channel interference (CCI) are two major obstacles to high speed data transmission in wireless cellular communications systems. Unlike thermal noise, their effects cannot be removed by increasing the signal power and are time-varying due to the relative motion between the transmitters and receivers. Space-time processing offers a signal processing framework to optimally integrate the spatial and temporal properties of the signal for maximal signal reception and at the same time, mitigate the ISI and CCI impairments. In this thesis, we focus on the development of this emerging technology to combat the undesirable effects of ISI and CCL We first develop a convenient mathematical model to parameterize the space-time multipath channel based on signal path power, directions and times of arrival. Starting from the continuous time-domain, we derive compact expressions of the vector space-time channel model that lead to the notion of block space-time manifold, Under certain identifiability conditions, the noiseless vector-channel outputs will lie on a subspace constructed from a set. of basis belonging to the block space-time manifold. This is an important observation as many high resolution array processing algorithms Can be applied directly to estimate the multi path channel parameters. Next we focus on the development of semi-blind channel identification and equalization algorithms for fast time-varying multi path channels. Specifically. we develop space-time processing algorithms for wireless TDMA networks that use short burst data formats with extremely short training data. sequences. Due to the latter, the estimated channel parameters are extremely unreliable for equalization with conventional adaptive methods. We approach the channel acquisition, tracking and equalization problems jointly, and exploit the richness of the inherent structural relationship between the channel parameters and the data sequence by repeated use of available data through a forward- backward optimization procedure. This enables the fuller exploitation of the available data. Our simulation studies show that significant performance gains are achieved over conventional methods. In the final part of this thesis, we address the problem identifying and equalizing multi path communication channels in the presence of strong CCl. By considering CCI as stochasic processes, we find that temporal diversity can be gained by observing the channel outputs from a tapped delay line. Together with the assertion that the finite alphabet property of the information sequences can offer additional information about the channel parameters and the noise-plus-covariance matrix, we develop a spatial temporal algorithm, iterative reweighting alternating minimization, to estimate the channel parameters and information sequence in a weighted least squares framework. The proposed algorithm is robust as it does not require knowledge of the number of CCI nor their structural information. Simulation studies demonstrate its efficacy over many reported methods

    ICI-aware parameter estimation for MIMO-OFDM radar via APES spatial filtering

    We propose a novel three-stage delay-Doppler-angle estimation algorithm for a MIMO-OFDM radar in the presence of inter-carrier interference (ICI). First, leveraging the observation that spatial covariance matrix is independent of target delays and Dopplers, we perform angle estimation via the MUSIC algorithm. For each estimated angle, we next formulate the radar delay-Doppler estimation as a joint carrier frequency offset (CFO) and channel estimation problem via an APES (amplitude and phase estimation) spatial filtering approach by transforming the delay-Doppler parameterized radar channel into an unstructured form. In the final stage, delay and Doppler of each target can be recovered from target-specific channel estimates over time and frequency. Simulation results illustrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithm in high-mobility scenarios

    A robust sequential hypothesis testing method for brake squeal localisation

    This contribution deals with the in situ detection and localisation of brake squeal in an automobile. As brake squeal is emitted from regions known a priori, i.e., near the wheels, the localisation is treated as a hypothesis testing problem. Distributed microphone arrays, situated under the automobile, are used to capture the directional properties of the sound field generated by a squealing brake. The spatial characteristics of the sampled sound field is then used to formulate the hypothesis tests. However, in contrast to standard hypothesis testing approaches of this kind, the propagation environment is complex and time-varying. Coupled with inaccuracies in the knowledge of the sensor and source positions as well as sensor gain mismatches, modelling the sound field is difficult and standard approaches fail in this case. A previously proposed approach implicitly tried to account for such incomplete system knowledge and was based on ad hoc likelihood formulations. The current paper builds upon this approach and proposes a second approach, based on more solid theoretical foundations, that can systematically account for the model uncertainties. Results from tests in a real setting show that the proposed approach is more consistent than the prior state-of-the-art. In both approaches, the tasks of detection and localisation are decoupled for complexity reasons. The localisation (hypothesis testing) is subject to a prior detection of brake squeal and identification of the squeal frequencies. The approaches used for the detection and identification of squeal frequencies are also presented. The paper, further, briefly addresses some practical issues related to array design and placement.     Space-Time Parameter Estimation in Radar Array Processing

    This thesis is about estimating parameters using an array of spatially distributed sensors. The material is presented in the context of radar array processing, but the analysis could be of interest in a wide range of applications such as communications, sonar, radio astronomy, seismology, and medical diagnosis. The main theme of the thesis is to analyze the fundamental limitations on estimation performance in sensor array signal processing. To this end, lower bounds on the estimation accuracy as well as the performance of the maximum likelihood (ML) and weighted least-squares (WLS) estimators are studied. The focus in the first part of the thesis is on asymptotic analyses. It deals with the problem of estimating the directions of arrival (DOAs) and Doppler frequencies with a sensor array. This problem can also be viewed as a two-dimensional (2-D) frequency estimation problem. The ML and WLS estimators for this problem amount to multidimensional, highly non-linear optimization problems which would be expensive to solve in real-time in a radar system. Therefore, simplifications of this problem are of great interest. It is shown in this thesis that, under some circumstances, the 2-D problem decouples into 1-D problems. This means a dramatic reduction in computational complexity with insignificant loss of accuracy. The second part contains a performance analysis of the ML DOA estimator under conditions of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a small number of data samples. It is well known that the ML estimator exhibits a threshold effect, i.e. a rapid deterioration of estimation accuracy below a certain SNR. This effect is caused by outliers and is not captured by standard analysis tools. In this thesis, approximations to the mean square estimation error and probability of outlier are derived that can be used to predict the threshold region performance of the ML estimator with high accuracy. Moreover, these approximations alleviate the need for time-consuming computer simulations when evaluating the ML performance
