    Dynamic hashing technique for bandwidth reduction in image transmission

    Hash functions are widely used in secure communication systems by generating the message digests for detection of unauthorized changes in the files. Encrypted hashed message or digital signature is used in many applications like authentication to ensure data integrity. It is almost impossible to ensure authentic messages when sending over large bandwidth in highly accessible network especially on insecure channels. Two issues that required to be addressed are the large size of hashed message and high bandwidth. A collaborative approach between encoded hash message and steganography provides a highly secure hidden data. The aim of the research is to propose a new method for producing a dynamic and smaller encoded hash message with reduced bandwidth. The encoded hash message is embedded into an image as a stego-image to avoid additional file and consequently the bandwidth is reduced. The receiver extracts the encoded hash and dynamic hashed message from the received file at the same time. If decoding encrypted hash by public key and hashed message from the original file matches the received file, it is considered as authentic. In enhancing the robustness of the hashed message, we compressed or encoded it or performed both operations before embedding the hashed data into the image. The proposed algorithm had achieved the lowest dynamic size (1 KB) with no fix length of the original file compared to MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-2 hash algorithms. The robustness of hashed message was tested against the substitution, replacement and collision attacks to check whether or not there is any detection of the same message in the output. The results show that the probability of the existence of the same hashed message in the output is closed to 0% compared to the MD5 and SHA algorithms. Amongst the benefits of this proposed algorithm is computational efficiency, and for messages with the sizes less than 1600 bytes, the hashed file reduced the original file up to 8.51%

    Individual control and data protection. Looking back and moving forward.

    This work aims at investigating the concept of “individual control over personal data”, as a core constituent of data protection law. In an era in which personal data have become a main driving force behind innovation, growth and prosperity; companies and governments are at war to gain new usable knowledge; technological advances are upstaging expectations in terms of what can be inferred, predicted and manipulated through data, and people are milked at an increasing speed to fulfill the generalized data hunger, calls to bring individuals back in control of their personal data and develop a more individual-friendly data ecosystem have been increasingly pressing. Yet, older and newer hurdles still hinder a satisfactory implementation of this vision. Against this backdrop, this work intends to investigate in depth the notion of “individual control” in the data protection realm and its persisting shortcomings, and attempt to further explore what steps could be made to move forward, in order to offer the necessary support or supplementation to this underlying principle of data protection. To this end, the analysis starts by providing a historical overview to track the emergence of this notion in the European data protection context, taking into account the role assigned to the concept of “control” in the doctrinal debate, its legal manifestation within regulatory provisions (at national, international and EU level) and the approach of the CJEU jurisprudence on the matter. The analysis further considers the manifold issues that undermine the effective implementation of the idea of individual control, particularly as a result of the technological changes that have transformed our society and revolutionized the way in which we live and communicate. Finally, in light of the shortcomings affecting the privacy self-management logic, the work seeks to explore possible a selection of mechanisms and approaches that, if adequately leveraged and implemented, could offer effective support and complementation to the individual control model, with a view to increasing the level of protection offered to individuals. These mechanisms include both “individual-centric” measures, whose leading actors remain data subjects and whose objective is to enhance the means individuals can use to gain better control, but also measures that move beyond a strict “data subject-focused” dimension, in that they are addressed to different societal actors and approach data protection from a broader collective rather than strictly individualistic perspective. As the analysis shows, there is, unfortunately, no silver bullet. However, the promotion and valorization of the proposed mechanisms and the combined benefits that these could bring, in their own way, on the data protection table are a first essential step to start building a systemic and comprehensive response to the protection gaps that afflict individuals and society as a result of the weaknesses currently affecting the individual control logic

    A Corporative Theory of Corporate Law and Governance

    This book investigates how a corporation, as a legal entity with certain specific attributes, but lacking human form, can take action in the “real world” of human activity. It contends that a corporation must take such action through, and by means of, an organization, both inside and outside its “corporate” legal limits, consisting of real individual persons and groups of persons. The corporation thus presents itself both as a legal entity assuming the legal form of a corporation and as a social entity taking the form of an organization. One form overlays the other. Those with whom it has legal relations, its legal counterparties, are also, in respect of its organization, participants in that organization. This theory of, or perspective on, the corporation and its governance is explicated here as “corporative”. The corporation comes into being, is situated, participates, and is “embedded”, in a complex sociopolitical-economic environment, which includes its legal counterparties and organizational participants. In addition to shareholders, they include employees, customers, suppliers, creditors, local, regional, and national communities, polities and governments, and non-governmental and other organizations, including those whose objectives include the environment, sustainability, governance, and social responsibility. Despite arguments from advocates of shareholder primacy and maximizing shareholder value, neither the corporation nor any of its participants, including shareholders, have any single objective. Instead, such participants have a variety of objectives which may be consistent to varying degrees with those of each other and with those of the corporation. However, the prosperity and well-being of corporations and their organizational participants, and the groups and other organizations of which organizational participants are members, at a macro-level, are, in many ways, interdependent. Today, prompted by various concerns (including the environment, sustainability, technology, changes in employment and other economic engagement patterns, and increasing income disparities), corporations, industry groups and NGOs, like governments, educational institutions, and other organizations, are facing challenges to the continued viability of contemporary capitalism and of its paradigmatic vehicle, the corporation. Addressing these challenges requires that corporations be considered in the context of the complex socio-political-economic environment in which they are situated and of which they partake. Drawing on analysis of corporate statutes and other relevant law, and historical, social, political, economic, organizational, business, and other theory, information and analysis, this work elucidates the corporative theory of, or perspective on, the corporation. It outlines how this might be applied in analyzing the corporation and its governance from a legal perspective. It illustrates how organizational participants may, and do, influence the behaviour of the relevant corporations; and how corporations may, and do, influence the behaviour of organizational participants. This contributes to understanding how such relationships may be employed, not only to “save” capitalism and the corporation, but to advance common interests in human prosperity, happiness, meaning, and even simple sustenance
