Random Access Game and Medium Access Control Design
Motivated partially by a control-theoretic viewpoint, we propose a game-theoretic model, called random access game, for contention control. We characterize Nash equilibria of random access games, study their dynamics, and propose distributed algorithms (strategy evolutions) to achieve Nash equilibria. This provides a general analytical framework that is capable of modeling a large class of system-wide quality-of-service (QoS) models via the specification of per-node utility functions, in which system-wide fairness or service differentiation can be achieved in a distributed manner as long as each node executes a contention resolution algorithm that is designed to achieve the Nash equilibrium. We thus propose a novel medium access method derived from carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) according to distributed strategy update mechanism achieving the Nash equilibrium of random access game. We present a concrete medium access method that adapts to a continuous contention measure called conditional collision probability, stabilizes the network into a steady state that achieves optimal throughput with targeted fairness (or service differentiation), and can decouple contention control from handling failed transmissions. In addition to guiding medium access control design, the random access game model also provides an analytical framework to understand equilibrium and dynamic properties of different medium access protocols
Feedback Control as a Framework for Understanding Tradeoffs in Biology
Control theory arose from a need to control synthetic systems. From
regulating steam engines to tuning radios to devices capable of autonomous
movement, it provided a formal mathematical basis for understanding the role of
feedback in the stability (or change) of dynamical systems. It provides a
framework for understanding any system with feedback regulation, including
biological ones such as regulatory gene networks, cellular metabolic systems,
sensorimotor dynamics of moving animals, and even ecological or evolutionary
dynamics of organisms and populations. Here we focus on four case studies of
the sensorimotor dynamics of animals, each of which involves the application of
principles from control theory to probe stability and feedback in an organism's
response to perturbations. We use examples from aquatic (electric fish station
keeping and jamming avoidance), terrestrial (cockroach wall following) and
aerial environments (flight control in moths) to highlight how one can use
control theory to understand how feedback mechanisms interact with the physical
dynamics of animals to determine their stability and response to sensory inputs
and perturbations. Each case study is cast as a control problem with sensory
input, neural processing, and motor dynamics, the output of which feeds back to
the sensory inputs. Collectively, the interaction of these systems in a closed

A Multi-Game Framework for Harmonized LTE-U and WiFi Coexistence over Unlicensed Bands
The introduction of LTE over unlicensed bands (LTE-U) will enable LTE base
stations (BSs) to boost their capacity and offload their traffic by exploiting
the underused unlicensed bands. However, to reap the benefits of LTE-U, it is
necessary to address various new challenges associated with LTE-U and WiFi
coexistence. In particular, new resource management techniques must be
developed to optimize the usage of the network resources while handling the
interdependence between WiFi and LTE users and ensuring that WiFi users are not
jeopardized. To this end, in this paper, a new game theoretic tool, dubbed as
\emph{multi-game} framework is proposed as a promising approach for modeling
resource allocation problems in LTE-U. In such a framework, multiple,
co-existing and coupled games across heterogeneous channels can be formulated
to capture the specific characteristics of LTE-U. Such games can be of
different properties and types but their outcomes are largely interdependent.
After introducing the basics of the multi-game framework, two classes of
algorithms are outlined to achieve the new solution concepts of multi-games.
Simulation results are then conducted to show how such a multi-game can
effectively capture the specific properties of LTE-U and make of it a

Control theoretic models of pointing
This article presents an empirical comparison of four models from manual control theory on their ability to model targeting behaviour by human users using a mouse: McRuerâs Crossover, Costelloâs Surge, second-order lag (2OL), and the Bang-bang model. Such dynamic models are generative, estimating not only movement time, but also pointer position, velocity, and acceleration on a moment-to-moment basis. We describe an experimental framework for acquiring pointing actions and automatically fitting the parameters of mathematical models to the empirical data. We present the use of time-series, phase space, and Hooke plot visualisations of the experimental data, to gain insight into human pointing dynamics. We find that the identified control models can generate a range of dynamic behaviours that captures aspects of human pointing behaviour to varying degrees. Conditions with a low index of difficulty (ID) showed poorer fit because their unconstrained nature leads naturally to more behavioural variability. We report on characteristics of human surge behaviour (the initial, ballistic sub-movement) in pointing, as well as differences in a number of controller performance measures, including overshoot, settling time, peak time, and rise time. We describe trade-offs among the models. We conclude that control theory offers a promising complement to Fittsâ law based approaches in HCI, with models providing representations and predictions of human pointing dynamics, which can improve our understanding of pointing and inform design

In the deliverable 3.2 we presented how the morphological computing ap-
proach can significantly facilitate the control strategy in several scenarios,
e.g. quadruped locomotion, bipedal locomotion and reaching. In particular,
the Kitty experimental platform is an example of the use of morphological
computation to allow quadruped locomotion. In this deliverable we continue
with the simulation studies on the application of the different morphological
computation strategies to control a robotic system
