Bayes Merging of Multiple Vocabularies for Scalable Image Retrieval
The Bag-of-Words (BoW) representation is well applied to recent
state-of-the-art image retrieval works. Typically, multiple vocabularies are
generated to correct quantization artifacts and improve recall. However, this
routine is corrupted by vocabulary correlation, i.e., overlapping among
different vocabularies. Vocabulary correlation leads to an over-counting of the
indexed features in the overlapped area, or the intersection set, thus
compromising the retrieval accuracy. In order to address the correlation
problem while preserve the benefit of high recall, this paper proposes a Bayes
merging approach to down-weight the indexed features in the intersection set.
Through explicitly modeling the correlation problem in a probabilistic view, a
joint similarity on both image- and feature-level is estimated for the indexed
features in the intersection set.
We evaluate our method through extensive experiments on three benchmark
datasets. Albeit simple, Bayes merging can be well applied in various merging
tasks, and consistently improves the baselines on multi-vocabulary merging.
Moreover, Bayes merging is efficient in terms of both time and memory cost, and

Searching by approximate personal-name matching
We discuss the design, building and evaluation of a method to access theinformation of a person, using his name as a search key, even if it has deformations. We present a similarity function, the DEA function, based
on the probabilities of the edit operations accordingly to the involved
letters and their position, and using a variable threshold. The efficacy
of DEA is quantitatively evaluated, without human relevance judgments,
very superior to the efficacy of known methods. A very efficient
approximate search technique for the DEA function is also presented
based on a compacted trie-tree structure.Postprint (published version
Automated speech and audio analysis for semantic access to multimedia
The deployment and integration of audio processing tools can enhance the semantic annotation of multimedia content, and as a consequence, improve the effectiveness of conceptual access tools. This paper overviews the various ways in which automatic speech and audio analysis can contribute to increased granularity of automatically extracted metadata. A number of techniques will be presented, including the alignment of speech and text resources, large vocabulary speech recognition, key word spotting and speaker classification. The applicability of techniques will be discussed from a media crossing perspective. The added value of the techniques and their potential contribution to the content value chain will be illustrated by the description of two (complementary) demonstrators for browsing broadcast news archives
An analysis of the use of graphics for information retrieval
Several research groups have addressed the problem of retrieving vector graphics. This work has, however, focused either on domain-dependent areas or was based on very simple graphics languages. Here we take a fresh look at the issue of graphics retrieval in general and in particular at the tasks which retrieval systems must support. The paper presents a series of case studies which explored the needs of professionals in the hope that these needs can help direct future graphics IR research. Suggested modelling techniques for some of the graphic collections are also presented
Integration of linked open data in case-based reasoning systems
This paper discusses the opportunities of integrating Linked Open Data (LOD) resources into Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) systems. Upon the application domain travel medicine, we will exemplify how LOD can be used to fill three out of four knowledge containers a CBR system is based on. The paper also presents the applied techniques for the realization and demonstrates the performance gain of knowledge acquisition by the use of LOD
User experiments with the Eurovision cross-language image retrieval system
In this paper we present Eurovision, a text-based system for cross-language (CL) image retrieval.
The system is evaluated by multilingual users for two search tasks with the system configured in
English and five other languages. To our knowledge this is the first published set of user
experiments for CL image retrieval. We show that: (1) it is possible to create a usable multilingual
search engine using little knowledge of any language other than English, (2) categorizing images
assists the user's search, and (3) there are differences in the way users search between the proposed
search tasks. Based on the two search tasks and user feedback, we describe important aspects of
any CL image retrieval system
Query Expansion for Survey Question Retrieval in the Social Sciences
In recent years, the importance of research data and the need to archive and
to share it in the scientific community have increased enormously. This
introduces a whole new set of challenges for digital libraries. In the social
sciences typical research data sets consist of surveys and questionnaires. In
this paper we focus on the use case of social science survey question reuse and
on mechanisms to support users in the query formulation for data sets. We
describe and evaluate thesaurus- and co-occurrence-based approaches for query
expansion to improve retrieval quality in digital libraries and research data
archives. The challenge here is to translate the information need and the
underlying sociological phenomena into proper queries. As we can show retrieval
quality can be improved by adding related terms to the queries. In a direct
comparison automatically expanded queries using extracted co-occurring terms
can provide better results than queries manually reformulated by a domain
