    Dynamic analysis of the train-bridge interaction: an accurate and efficient numerical method

    The dynamic behavior of railway bridges carrying high-speed trains can be analyzed with or without the consideration of the vehicle's own structure. However, due to the amount of kinetic energy carried at high speeds, the train may interact significantly with the bridge, especially when resonance occurs. Equally important is the riding comfort and the stability of the track and train cars, which are usually the most critical limit states in the design of this type of structures. With the aim of studying this problem a computer code was developed, being the interaction between the bridge and the train implemented by means of contact conditions between each train wheel (nodal point) and the structure (point inside a finite element). The treatment of the interaction between a train wheel and a point on the surface of a finite element is directly and efficiently implemented by means of an extended stiffness matrix, which includes stiffness, flexibility and additional terms that stem from the compatibility equations between the displacements of the vehicle and the bridge. This methodology was applied to the study of the dynamic behavior of a bowstring arch bridge and proved to be very accurate and efficien

    The effects of localized damping on structural response

    The effect of localized structural damping on the excitability of higher order normal modes of the large space telescope was investigated. A preprocessor computer program was developed to incorporate Voigt structural joint damping models in a NASTRAN finite-element dynamic model. A postprocessor computer program was developed to select critical modes for low-frequency attitude control problems and for higher frequency fine-stabilization problems. The mode selection is accomplished by ranking the flexible modes based on coefficients for rate gyro, position gyro, and optical sensors, and on image-plane motions due to sinusoidal or random power spectral density force and torque inputs

    Response of beams resting on viscoelastically damped foundation to moving oscillators

    The response of beams resting on viscoelastically damped foundation under moving SDoF oscillators is scrutinized through a novel state-space formulation, in which a number of internal variables is introduced with the aim of representing the frequency-dependent behaviour of the viscoelastic foundation. A suitable single-step scheme is provided for the numerical integration of the equations of motion, and the Dimensional Analysis is applied in order to define the dimensionless combinations of the design parameters that rule the responses of beam and moving oscillator. The effects of boundary conditions, span length and number of modes of the beam, along with those of the mechanical properties of oscillator and foundation, are investigated in a new dimensionless form, and some interesting trends are highlighted. The inaccuracy associated with the use of effective values of stiffness and damping for the viscoelastic foundation, as usual in the present state-of-practice, is also quantified

    Radiation from Bodies with Extreme Acceleration II: Kinematics

    When applied to a dipole source subjected to acceleration which is violent and long lasting (``extreme acceleration''), Maxwell's equations predict radiative power which augments Larmor's classical radiation formula by a nontrivial amount. The physical assumptions behind this result are made possible by the kinematics of a system of geometrical clocks whose tickings are controlled by cavities which are expanding inertially. For the purpose of measuring the radiation from such a source we take advantage of the physical validity of a spacetime coordinate framework (``inertially expanding frame'') based on such clocks. They are compatible and commensurable with the accelerated clocks of the accelerated source. By contrast, a common Lorentz frame with its mutually static clocks won't do: it lacks that commensurability. Inertially expanding clocks give a physicist a window into the frame of a source with extreme acceleration. He thus can locate that source and measure radiation from it without being subjected to such acceleration himself. The conclusion is that inertially expanding reference frames reveal qualitatively distinct aspects of nature which would not be accessible if static inertial frames were the only admissible frames.Comment: This 21-page 13-figure RevTeX4 article is a follow-up to Part I: "Radiation from violently accelerated bodies", gr-qc/011004

    A Machine learning approach to POS tagging

    We have applied inductive learning of statistical decision trees and relaxation labelling to the Natural Language Processing (NLP) task of morphosyntactic disambiguation (Part Of Speech Tagging). The learning process is supervised and obtains a language model oriented to resolve POS ambiguities. This model consists of a set of statistical decision trees expressing distribution of tags and words in some relevant contexts. The acquired language models are complete enough to be directly used as sets of POS disambiguation rules, and include more complex contextual information than simple collections of n-grams usually used in statistical taggers. We have implemented a quite simple and fast tagger that has been tested and evaluated on the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) corpus with a remarkable accuracy. However, better results can be obtained by translating the trees into rules to feed a flexible relaxation labelling based tagger. In this direction we describe a tagger which is able to use information of any kind (n-grams, automatically acquired constraints, linguistically motivated manually written constraints, etc.), and in particular to incorporate the machine learned decision trees. Simultaneously, we address the problem of tagging when only small training material is available, which is crucial in any process of constructing, from scratch, an annotated corpus.     Clothing Co-Parsing by Joint Image Segmentation and Labeling

    This paper aims at developing an integrated system of clothing co-parsing, in order to jointly parse a set of clothing images (unsegmented but annotated with tags) into semantic configurations. We propose a data-driven framework consisting of two phases of inference. The first phase, referred as "image co-segmentation", iterates to extract consistent regions on images and jointly refines the regions over all images by employing the exemplar-SVM (E-SVM) technique [23]. In the second phase (i.e. "region co-labeling"), we construct a multi-image graphical model by taking the segmented regions as vertices, and incorporate several contexts of clothing configuration (e.g., item location and mutual interactions). The joint label assignment can be solved using the efficient Graph Cuts algorithm. In addition to evaluate our framework on the Fashionista dataset [30], we construct a dataset called CCP consisting of 2098 high-resolution street fashion photos to demonstrate the performance of our system. We achieve 90.29% / 88.23% segmentation accuracy and 65.52% / 63.89% recognition rate on the Fashionista and the CCP datasets, respectively, which are superior compared with state-of-the-art methods.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, CVPR 201

    A unique modulation system for two channel data transmission

    A simple low cost system is reported for the telemetry of information from meteorological rocket payloads including parachute borne systems. It uses S- or L-band microwave links with low cost oscillator type transmitters. An extension of this system to transmit two channels of data simultaneously by standard time and frequency multiplexing techniques as a sampled pulse is described. One channel is represented by the pulse repetition rate while the other channel is represented by the instantaneous duty cycle of the pulse train
