    Impulse Elimination and Fault-Tolerant Preview Controller Design for a Class of Descriptor Systems

    In this paper, a fault-tolerant preview controller is designed for a class of impulse controllable continuous time descriptor systems with sensor faults. Firstly, the impulse is eliminated by introducing state prefeedback; then an algebraic equation and a normal control system are obtained by restricted equivalent transformation for the descriptor system after impulse elimination. Next, the model following problem in fault-tolerant control is transformed into the optimal regulation problem of the augmented system which is constructed by a general method. And the final augmented system and its corresponding performance index function are obtained by state feedback for the augmented system constructed above. The controller with preview effect for the final augmented system is attained based on the existing conclusions of optimal preview control; then, the fault-tolerant preview controller for the original system is obtained through integral and backstepping. The relationships between the stabilisability and detectability of the final augmented system and the corresponding characteristics of the original descriptor system are also strictly discussed. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulation

    Active suspension control of electric vehicle with in-wheel motors

    In-wheel motor (IWM) technology has attracted increasing research interests in recent years due to the numerous advantages it offers. However, the direct attachment of IWMs to the wheels can result in an increase in the vehicle unsprung mass and a significant drop in the suspension ride comfort performance and road holding stability. Other issues such as motor bearing wear motor vibration, air-gap eccentricity and residual unbalanced radial force can adversely influence the motor vibration, passenger comfort and vehicle rollover stability. Active suspension and optimized passive suspension are possible methods deployed to improve the ride comfort and safety of electric vehicles equipped with inwheel motor. The trade-off between ride comfort and handling stability is a major challenge in active suspension design. This thesis investigates the development of novel active suspension systems for successful implementation of IWM technology in electric cars. Towards such aim, several active suspension methods based on robust H∞ control methods are developed to achieve enhanced suspension performance by overcoming the conflicting requirement between ride comfort, suspension deflection and road holding. A novel fault-tolerant H∞ controller based on friction compensation is in the presence of system parameter uncertainties, actuator faults, as well as actuator time delay and system friction is proposed. A friction observer-based Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy H∞ controller is developed for active suspension with sprung mass variation and system friction. This method is validated experimentally on a quarter car test rig. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed control methods in improving vehicle ride performance and road holding capability under different road profiles. Quarter car suspension model with suspended shaft-less direct-drive motors has the potential to improve the road holding capability and ride performance. Based on the quarter car suspension with dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) model, a multi-objective parameter optimization for active suspension of IWM mounted electric vehicle based on genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to suppress the sprung mass vibration, motor vibration, motor bearing wear as well as improving ride comfort, suspension deflection and road holding stability. Then a fault-tolerant fuzzy H∞ control design approach for active suspension of IWM driven electric vehicles in the presence of sprung mass variation, actuator faults and control input constraints is proposed. The T-S fuzzy suspension model is used to cope with the possible sprung mass variation. The output feedback control problem for active suspension system of IWM driven electric vehicles with actuator faults and time delay is further investigated. The suspended motor parameters and vehicle suspension parameters are optimized based on the particle swarm optimization. A robust output feedback H∞ controller is designed to guarantee the system’s asymptotic stability and simultaneously satisfying the performance constraints. The proposed output feedback controller reveals much better performance than previous work when different actuator thrust losses and time delay occurs. The road surface roughness is coupled with in-wheel switched reluctance motor air-gap eccentricity and the unbalanced residual vertical force. Coupling effects between road excitation and in wheel switched reluctance motor (SRM) on electric vehicle ride comfort are also analysed in this thesis. A hybrid control method including output feedback controller and SRM controller are designed to suppress SRM vibration and to prolong the SRM lifespan, while at the same time improving vehicle ride comfort. Then a state feedback H∞ controller combined with SRM controller is designed for in-wheel SRM driven electric vehicle with DVA structure to enhance vehicle and SRM performance. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of DVA structure based active suspension system with proposed control method its ability to significantly improve the road holding capability and ride performance, as well as motor performance

    Fault-tolerant load reduction control for large offshore wind turbines

    Offshore wind turbines suffer from asymmetrical loading (blades, tower etc.), leading to enhanced structural fatigue. As well as asymmetrical loading different types of faults (pitch system faults etc.) can occur simultaneously, causing degradation of load mitigation performance and enhanced fatigue. Individual pitch control (IPC) provides an important method to achieve mitigation of rotor asymmetric loads, but this may be accompanied by a resulting enhancement of pitch movement leading to increased possibility of pitch system faults, which negative effects on IPC performance.This thesis focuses on combining the fault tolerant control (FTC) techniques with load reduction strategies by a more intelligent pitch control system (i.e. collective pitch control and IPC) for offshore wind turbines in a system level to reduce the operation & maintenance costs and improve the system reliability. The scenario of load mitigation is analogous to the FTC problem because the action of rotor/tower bending can be considered as a fault effect. The essential concept is to attempt to account for all the "fault effects" in the rotor and tower systems which can weaken the effect of bending moment reduction through the use of IPC.Motivated by the above, this thesis focuses on four aspects to fill the gap of the combination between FTC and IPC schemes. Firstly, a preview control system using model predictive control with future wind speed is proposed, which could be a possible alternative to using LiDAR technology when using preview control for load reduction. Secondly, a multivariable IPC controller for both blade and tower load mitigation considering the inherent couplings is investigated. Thirdly, appropriate control-based fault monitoring strategies including fault detection and fault estimation FE-based FTC scheme are proposed for several different pitch actuator/sensor faults. Furthermore, the combined analysis of an FE-based FTC strategy with the IPC system at a system level is provided and the robustness of the proposed strategy is verified

    Robust Preview Control for a Class of Uncertain Discrete-Time Lipschitz Nonlinear Systems

According to the preview control theory, an augmented error system including the tracking error and the known future information on the reference signal is constructed. To avoid static error, a discrete integrator is introduced. Using the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach, a state feedback controller is developed to guarantee that the closed-loop system of the augmented error system is asymptotically stable with H∞ performance. Based on this, the robust preview tracking controller of the original system is obtained. Finally, two numerical examples are included to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller

    Noise-Adaptive Compiler Mappings for Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum Computers

    A massive gap exists between current quantum computing (QC) prototypes, and the size and scale required for many proposed QC algorithms. Current QC implementations are prone to noise and variability which affect their reliability, and yet with less than 80 quantum bits (qubits) total, they are too resource-constrained to implement error correction. The term Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) refers to these current and near-term systems of 1000 qubits or less. Given NISQ's severe resource constraints, low reliability, and high variability in physical characteristics such as coherence time or error rates, it is of pressing importance to map computations onto them in ways that use resources efficiently and maximize the likelihood of successful runs. This paper proposes and evaluates backend compiler approaches to map and optimize high-level QC programs to execute with high reliability on NISQ systems with diverse hardware characteristics. Our techniques all start from an LLVM intermediate representation of the quantum program (such as would be generated from high-level QC languages like Scaffold) and generate QC executables runnable on the IBM Q public QC machine. We then use this framework to implement and evaluate several optimal and heuristic mapping methods. These methods vary in how they account for the availability of dynamic machine calibration data, the relative importance of various noise parameters, the different possible routing strategies, and the relative importance of compile-time scalability versus runtime success. Using real-system measurements, we show that fine grained spatial and temporal variations in hardware parameters can be exploited to obtain an average 2.92.9x (and up to 1818x) improvement in program success rate over the industry standard IBM Qiskit compiler.Comment: To appear in ASPLOS'1

    Trends in vehicle motion control for automated driving on public roads

    In this paper, we describe how vehicle systems and the vehicle motion control are affected by automated driving on public roads. We describe the redundancy needed for a road vehicle to meet certain safety goals. The concept of system safety as well as system solutions to fault tolerant actuation of steering and braking and the associated fault tolerant power supply is described. Notably restriction of the operational domain in case of reduced capability of the driving automation system is discussed. Further we consider path tracking, state estimation of vehicle motion control required for automated driving as well as an example of a minimum risk manoeuver and redundant steering by means of differential braking. The steering by differential braking could offer heterogeneous or dissimilar redundancy that complements the redundancy of described fault tolerant steering systems for driving automation equipped vehicles. Finally, the important topic of verification of driving automation systems is addressed

    Blade root moment sensor failure detection based on multibeam LIDAR for fault-tolerant individual pitch control of wind turbines

    Detection of blade root moment sensor failures is an important problem for fault-tolerant individual pitch control, which plays a key role in reduction of uneven blade loads of large wind turbines. A new method for detection of blade root moment sensor failures which is based on variations induced by a vertical wind shear is described in this paper. The detection is associated with monitoring of statistical properties of the difference between amplitudes of the first harmonic of the blade load, which is calculated in two different ways. The first method is based on processing of the load sensor signal, which contains a number of harmonics. The first harmonic is recovered via least squares estimation of the blade load signal with harmonic regressor and strictly diagonally dominant (SDD) information matrix. The second method is a model-based method of estimation of the first harmonic, which relies on the blade load model and upwind speed measurements provided by multibeam Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). This is a new application for future LIDAR-enabled wind turbine technologies. Moreover, adaptation of the load model in a uniform wind field is proposed. This adaptation improves accuracy of the load estimation and hence the performance of the blade load sensor failure detection method
