    Lucas/Kanade meets Horn/Schunck : combining local and global optic flow methods

    Differential methods belong to the most widely used techniques for optic flow computation in image sequences. They can be classified into local methods such as the Lucas-Kanade technique or Bigün\u27s structure tensor method, and into global methods such as the Horn/Schunck approach and its extensions. Often local methods are more robust under noise, while global techniques yield dense flow fields. The goal of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding and the design of differential methods in four ways: (i) We juxtapose the role of smoothing/regularisation processes that are required in local and global differential methods for optic flow computation. (ii) This discussion motivates us to describe and evaluate a novel method that combines important advantages of local and global approaches: It yields dense flow fields that are robust against noise. (iii) Spatiotemproal and nonlinear extensions to this hybrid method are presented. (iv) We propose a simple confidence measure for optic flow methods that minimise energy functionals. It allows to sparsify a dense flow field gradually, depending on the reliability required for the resulting flow. Comparisons with experiments from the literature demonstrate the favourable performance of the proposed methods and the confidence measure

    Vision-based localization methods under GPS-denied conditions

    This paper reviews vision-based localization methods in GPS-denied environments and classifies the mainstream methods into Relative Vision Localization (RVL) and Absolute Vision Localization (AVL). For RVL, we discuss the broad application of optical flow in feature extraction-based Visual Odometry (VO) solutions and introduce advanced optical flow estimation methods. For AVL, we review recent advances in Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (VSLAM) techniques, from optimization-based methods to Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based methods. We also introduce the application of offline map registration and lane vision detection schemes to achieve Absolute Visual Localization. This paper compares the performance and applications of mainstream methods for visual localization and provides suggestions for future studies.Comment: 32 pages, 15 figure

    A survey on variational optic flow methods for small displacements

    Optic fow describes the displacement field in an image sequence. Its reliable computation constitutes one of the main challenges in computer vision, and variational methods belong to the most successful techniques for achieving this goal. Variational methods recover the optic flow field as a minimiser of a suitable energy functional that involves data and smoothness terms. In this paper we present a survey on different model assumptions for each of these terms and illustrate their impact by experiments. We restrict ourselves to rotationally invariant convex functionals with a linearised data term. Such models are appropriate for small displacements. Regarding the data term, constancy assumptions on the brightness, the gradient, the Hessian, the gradient magnitude, the Laplacian, and the Hessian determinant are investigated. Local integration and nonquadratic penalisation are considered in order to improve robustness under noise. With respect to the smoothness term, we review a recent taxonomy that links regularisers to diffusion processes. It allows to distinguish five types of regularisation strategies: homogeneous, isotropic image-driven, anisotropic image-driven, isotropic flow-driven, and anisotropic flow-driven. All these regularisations can be performed either in the spatial or the spatiotemporal domain. After discussing well-posedness results for convex optic flow functionals, we sketch some numerical ideas in order to achieve realtime performance on a standard PC by means of multigrid methods, and we survey a simple and intuitive confidence measure

    Investigation of Computer Vision Concepts and Methods for Structural Health Monitoring and Identification Applications

    This study presents a comprehensive investigation of methods and technologies for developing a computer vision-based framework for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Structural Identification (St-Id) for civil infrastructure systems, with particular emphasis on various types of bridges. SHM is implemented on various structures over the last two decades, yet, there are some issues such as considerable cost, field implementation time and excessive labor needs for the instrumentation of sensors, cable wiring work and possible interruptions during implementation. These issues make it only viable when major investments for SHM are warranted for decision making. For other cases, there needs to be a practical and effective solution, which computer-vision based framework can be a viable alternative. Computer vision based SHM has been explored over the last decade. Unlike most of the vision-based structural identification studies and practices, which focus either on structural input (vehicle location) estimation or on structural output (structural displacement and strain responses) estimation, the proposed framework combines the vision-based structural input and the structural output from non-contact sensors to overcome the limitations given above. First, this study develops a series of computer vision-based displacement measurement methods for structural response (structural output) monitoring which can be applied to different infrastructures such as grandstands, stadiums, towers, footbridges, small/medium span concrete bridges, railway bridges, and long span bridges, and under different loading cases such as human crowd, pedestrians, wind, vehicle, etc. Structural behavior, modal properties, load carrying capacities, structural serviceability and performance are investigated using vision-based methods and validated by comparing with conventional SHM approaches. In this study, some of the most famous landmark structures such as long span bridges are utilized as case studies. This study also investigated the serviceability status of structures by using computer vision-based methods. Subsequently, issues and considerations for computer vision-based measurement in field application are discussed and recommendations are provided for better results. This study also proposes a robust vision-based method for displacement measurement using spatio-temporal context learning and Taylor approximation to overcome the difficulties of vision-based monitoring under adverse environmental factors such as fog and illumination change. In addition, it is shown that the external load distribution on structures (structural input) can be estimated by using visual tracking, and afterward load rating of a bridge can be determined by using the load distribution factors extracted from computer vision-based methods. By combining the structural input and output results, the unit influence line (UIL) of structures are extracted during daily traffic just using cameras from which the external loads can be estimated by using just cameras and extracted UIL. Finally, the condition assessment at global structural level can be achieved using the structural input and output, both obtained from computer vision approaches, would give a normalized response irrespective of the type and/or load configurations of the vehicles or human loads

    Load Estimation, Structural Identification and Human Comfort Assessment of Flexible Structures

    Stadiums, pedestrian bridges, dance floors, and concert halls are distinct from other civil engineering structures due to several challenges in their design and dynamic behavior. These challenges originate from the flexible inherent nature of these structures coupled with human interactions in the form of loading. The investigations in past literature on this topic clearly state that the design of flexible structures can be improved with better load modeling strategies acquired with reliable load quantification, a deeper understanding of structural response, generation of simple and efficient human-structure interaction models and new measurement and assessment criteria for acceptable vibration levels. In contribution to these possible improvements, this dissertation taps into three specific areas: the load quantification of lively individuals or crowds, the structural identification under non-stationary and narrowband disturbances and the measurement of excessive vibration levels for human comfort. For load quantification, a computer vision based approach capable of tracking both individual and crowd motion is used. For structural identification, a noise-assisted Multivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition (MEMD) algorithm is incorporated into the operational modal analysis. The measurement of excessive vibration levels and the assessment of human comfort are accomplished through computer vision based human and object tracking, which provides a more convenient means for measurement and computation. All the proposed methods are tested in the laboratory environment utilizing a grandstand simulator and in the field on a pedestrian bridge and on a football stadium. Findings and interpretations from the experimental results are presented. The dissertation is concluded by highlighting the critical findings and the possible future work that may be conducted
