Technical pre-study for the ExMS project
This report aims to give an overview of software and hardware platforms available now or in the near future for building a prototype of an ExMS application (for an overview of the ExMS project, see Appendix). The report also gives an overview of the different technologies for building third-party mobile client software applications that are in use today.
The report is composed of three sections. The first section is a general discussion on mobile client software and the different technologies that can be used to develop third-party mobile client software. The next section continues with a specific discussion on ExMS and answers the following questions: What is the general architecture of the ExMS application? What alternatives exist for implementing the ExMS prototype? The final section of the report is a recommendation of hardware and software platform for building the ExMS prototype
Isotropic-nematic interfacial tension of hard and soft rods: application of advanced grand canonical biased sampling techniques
Coexistence between the isotropic and the nematic phase in suspensions of
rods is studied using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations with a bias on
the nematic order parameter. The biasing scheme makes it possible to estimate
the interfacial tension gamma in systems of hard and soft rods. For hard rods
with L/D=15, we obtain gamma ~ 1.4 kB T/L^2, with L the rod length, D the rod
diameter, T the temperature, and kB the Boltzmann constant. This estimate is in
good agreement with theoretical predictions, and the order of magnitude is
consistent with experiments.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
A Technology Proposal for a Management Information System for the Director’s Office, NAL.
This technology proposal attempts in giving a viable solution for a Management Information System (MIS) for the Director's Office. In today's IT scenario, an Organization's success greatly depends on its ability to get accurate and timely data on its operations of varied nature and to manage this data effectively to guide its activities and meet its goals. To cater to the information needs of an Organization or an Office like the Director's Office, information systems are developed and deployed to gather and process data in ways that produce a variety of information to the end-user. MIS can therefore can be defined as an integrated user-machine system for providing information to support operations, management and decision-making functions in an Organization. The system in a nutshell, utilizes computer hardware and software, manual procedures, models for analysis planning, control and decision-making and a database. Using state-of-the-art front-end and back-end web based tools, this technology proposal attempts to provide a single-point Information Management, Information Storage, Information Querying and Information Retrieval interface to the Director and his office for handling all information traffic flow in and out of the Director's Office
Gas Electron Multipliers for the Antiproton Decelerator
The new beam profile measurement for the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN
is based on a single Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) with a 2D readout structure.
This detector is very light (~0.4% X0), and measures horizontal and vertical
profiles directly in one plane. This overcomes the problems previously
encountered with multi-wire proportional chambers for the same purpose, where
beam interactions with the detector severely affect the obtained profiles. A
prototype was installed and successfully tested in late 2010, with another five
detectors now installed in the ASACUSA and AEGIS beam lines. This paper will
provide a detailed description of the detector and discuss the results
obtained.Comment: Paper presented at DIPAC 2011, Hambur
