    Creating Digital Musical Instruments with libmosaic-sound and Mosaicode

    Music has been influenced by digital technology over the last few decades. With the computer and the Digital Musical Instruments, the musical composition could trespass the use of acoustic instruments demanding to musicians and composers a sort of computer programming skills for the development of musical applications. In order to simplify the development of musical applications several tools and musical programming languages arose bringing some facilities to lay-musicians on computer programming to use the computer to make music. This work presents the development of a Visual Programming Language (VPL) to develop DMI applications in the Mosaicode programming environment, simplifying sound design and making the creation of digital instruments more accessible to digital artists. It is also presented the implementation of libmosaic-sound library, which supported the VPL development, for the specific domain of Music Computing and DMI creation

    An auditory classifier employing a wavelet neural network implemented in a digital design

    This thesis addresses the problem of classifying audio as either voice or music. The goal was to solve this problem by means of digital logic circuit, capable of performing the classification in real time. Since digital audio is essentially a discrete non-periodic timeseries, it was necessary to extract features from the audio which are suitable for classification. The discrete wavelet transform combined with a feature extraction method was found to produce such features. The task of classifying these features was found to be best performed by an artificial neural network. Collectively known as a wavelet neural network, the digital logic design implementation of this architecture was effective in correctly identifying the test data sets. The wavelet neural network was first implemented as a software model, to develop the network architecture and parameters, and to determine ideal results. The unconstrained software simulation was capable of correctly classifying test data sets with greater than 90% accuracy. This model was not feasible as a digital logic design however, as the size of the implementation would have been prohibitive. The size of the resulting hardware model was constrained by reducing the widths of the data paths and storage registers. The hardware implementation of the wavelet processor consisted of a novel pipelined design with a novel data-flow control structure. The neural network training was performed entirely in software by way of a novel training algorithm, and the resulting weights were made to be available to be uploaded to the hardware model. The digital design of the wavelet neural network was modeled in VHDL and was synthesized with Synplicity Synplify, using Actel ProASICPlus APA600 synthesized library cells with a target clock frequency of 11.025 KHz, to match the sampling rate of the digital audio. The results of the synthesis indicated that the design could operate at 15.6 MHz, and required 96,265 logic cells. The resulting constrained wavelet neural network processor was capable of correctly classifying test data sets with greater than 70% accuracy. Additional modeling showed that with a reasonable increase in hardware size, greater than 86% accuracy is attainable. This thesis focused on classifying audio as either voice or music, and future research could readily extend this work to the problem of speaker recognition and multimedia indexing

    A Generic Alerting Service for Digital Libraries

    Users of modern digital libraries (DLs) can keep themselves up-to-date by searching and browsing their favorite collections, or more conveniently by resorting to an alerting service. The alerting service notifies its clients about new or changed documents. Proprietary and mediating alerting services fail to fluidly integrate information from differing collections. This paper analyses the conceptual requirements of this much-sought after service for digital libraries. We demonstrate that the differing concepts of digital libraries and its underlying technical design has extensive influence (a) the expectations, needs and interests of users regarding an alerting service, and (b) on the technical possibilities of the implementation of the service. Our findings will show that the range of issues surrounding alerting services for digital libraries, their design and use is greater than one may anticipate. We also show that, conversely, the requirements for an alerting service have considerable impact on the concepts of DL design. Our findings should be of interest for librarians as well as system designers. We highlight and discuss the far-reaching implications for the design of, and interaction with, libraries. This paper discusses the lessons learned from building such a distributed alerting service. We present our prototype implementation as a proof-of-concept for an alerting service for open DL software

    The Original Beat: An Electronic Music Production System and Its Design

    The barrier to entry in electronic music production is high. It requires expensive, complicated software, extensive knowledge of music theory and experience with sound generation. Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) are the main tools used to piece together digital sounds and produce a complete song. While these DAWs are great for music professionals, they have a steep learning curve for beginners and they must run native on a user’s computer. For a novice to begin creating music takes much more time, eort, and money than it should. We believe anyone who is interested in creating electronic music deserves a simple way to digitize their ideas and hear results. With this idea in mind, we created a web based, co-creative system to allow beginners and pros alike to easily create electronic digital music. We outline the requirements for such a system and detail the design and architecture. We go through the specifics of the system we implemented covering the front-end, back-end, server, and generation algorithms. Finally, we will review our development time-line, examine the challenges and risks that arose when building our system, and present future improvements

    Visual collaging of music in a digital library

    This article explores the role visual browsing can play within a digital music library. The context to the work is provided through a review of related techniques drawn from the fields of digital libraries and human computer interaction. Implemented within the open source digital library toolkit Greenstone, a prototype system is described that combines images located through textual metadata with a visualisation technique known as collaging to provide a leisurely, undirected interaction with a music collection. Emphasis in the article is given to the augmentations of the basic technique to work in the musical domain
