    The complexity landscape of decompositional parameters for ILP

    Integer Linear Programming (ILP) can be seen as the archetypical problem for NP-complete optimization problems, and a wide range of problems in artificial intelligence are solved in practice via a translation to ILP. Despite its huge range of applications, only few tractable fragments of ILP are known, probably the most prominent of which is based on the notion of total unimodularity. Using entirely different techniques, we identify new tractable fragments of ILP by studying structural parameterizations of the constraint matrix within the framework of parameterized complexity. In particular, we show that ILP is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the treedepth of the constraint matrix and the maximum absolute value of any coefficient occurring in the ILP instance. Together with matching hardness results for the more general parameter treewidth, we give an overview of the complexity of ILP w.r.t. decompositional parameters defined on the constraint matrix

    Integer Linear Programming (ILP) has a broad range of applications in various areas of artificial intelligence. Yet in spite of recent advances, we still lack a thorough understanding of which structural restrictions make ILP tractable. Here we study ILP instances consisting of a small number of “global” variables and/or constraints such that the remaining part of the instance consists of small and otherwise independent components; this is captured in terms of a structural measure we call fracture backdoors which generalizes, for instance, the well-studied class of N-fold ILP instances. Our main contributions can be divided into three parts. First, we formally develop fracture backdoors and obtain exact and approximation algorithms for computing these. Second, we exploit these backdoors to develop several new parameterized algorithms for ILP; the performance of these algorithms will naturally scale based on the number of global variables or constraints in the instance. Finally, we complement the developed algorithms with matching lower bounds. Altogether, our results paint a near-complete complexity landscape of ILP with respect to fracture backdoors

    Solving Integer Linear Programs by Exploiting Variable-Constraint Interactions: A Survey

    Integer Linear Programming (ILP) is among the most successful and general paradigms for solving computationally intractable optimization problems in computer science. ILP is NP-complete, and until recently we have lacked a systematic study of the complexity of ILP through the lens of variable-constraint interactions. This changed drastically in recent years thanks to a series of results that together lay out a detailed complexity landscape for the problem centered around the structure of graphical representations of instances. The aim of this survey is to summarize these recent developments, put them into context and a unified format, and make them more approachable for experts from many diverse backgrounds

    Backdoors to planning

    Backdoors measure the distance to tractable fragments and have become an important tool to find fixed-parameter tractable (fpt) algorithms for hard problems in AI and beyond. Despite their success, backdoors have not been used for planning, a central problem in AI that has a high computational complexity. In this work, we introduce two notions of backdoors building upon the causal graph. We analyze the complexity of finding a small backdoor (detection) and using the backdoor to solve the problem (evaluation) in the light of planning with (un)bounded plan length/domain of the variables. For each setting we present either an fpt-result or rule out the existence thereof by showing parameterized intractability. For several interesting cases we achieve the most desirable outcome: detection and evaluation are fpt. In addition, we explore the power of polynomial preprocessing for all fpt-results, i.e., we investigate whether polynomial kernels exist. We show that for the detection problems, polynomial kernels exist whereas we rule out the existence of polynomial kernels for the evaluation problems

    An Algorithmic Theory of Integer Programming

    We study the general integer programming problem where the number of variables nn is a variable part of the input. We consider two natural parameters of the constraint matrix AA: its numeric measure aa and its sparsity measure dd. We show that integer programming can be solved in time g(a,d)poly(n,L)g(a,d)\textrm{poly}(n,L), where gg is some computable function of the parameters aa and dd, and LL is the binary encoding length of the input. In particular, integer programming is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by aa and dd, and is solvable in polynomial time for every fixed aa and dd. Our results also extend to nonlinear separable convex objective functions. Moreover, for linear objectives, we derive a strongly-polynomial algorithm, that is, with running time g(a,d)poly(n)g(a,d)\textrm{poly}(n), independent of the rest of the input data. We obtain these results by developing an algorithmic framework based on the idea of iterative augmentation: starting from an initial feasible solution, we show how to quickly find augmenting steps which rapidly converge to an optimum. A central notion in this framework is the Graver basis of the matrix AA, which constitutes a set of fundamental augmenting steps. The iterative augmentation idea is then enhanced via the use of other techniques such as new and improved bounds on the Graver basis, rapid solution of integer programs with bounded variables, proximity theorems and a new proximity-scaling algorithm, the notion of a reduced objective function, and others. As a consequence of our work, we advance the state of the art of solving block-structured integer programs. In particular, we develop near-linear time algorithms for nn-fold, tree-fold, and 22-stage stochastic integer programs.
