Social media metrics for new research evaluation

This chapter approaches, both from a theoretical and practical perspective, the most important principles and conceptual frameworks that can be considered in the application of social media metrics for scientific evaluation. We propose conceptually valid uses for social media metrics in research evaluation. Why are new journals created? An international analysis of Information and Documentation titles (2013-2018)

The creation or title changes of scientific journals in the information and documentation (ID) area in the period 2013-2018 are analyzed. Based on the total of 62 such journals identified through ISSN Portal and Ulrichsweb, the following are described: characteristic aspects such as country, language, type of publisher, and access model; presence in bibliographic databases, citations, or journal directories; survival and volume of articles published; annual number of citations to articles according to Google Scholar; thematic scope declared by the editors; and finally, the justification given by the editors for the change of title or the creation of a new journal. Among the main conclusions regarding newly created titles, the leading role of academic publishers in expanding national university systems and open-access titles stands out. In general, new publications generate few articles per year, have little presence in databases, and receive few citations. Title changes were found only in journals published by commercial publishers. In both cases, journals with a general thematic scope predominate and a significant number of journals did not justify their creation or change of title

The objective of the meeting was to identify concrete ways for implementing proposals to foster the international scientific co-operation of universities and academic societies. Against the background of an assumed tendency towards knowledge monopolies, caused by the protection of intellectual property rights by a few publishers, the experts in the Conference discussed the potential of these academic e-presses for improving scientific article collection and treatment as well as facilitating the access to scientific knowledge. The papers in this volume can best be regarded as contributions to the areas of inquiry in a field that is continuing to change very rapidly

Geschichte Online: neue Möglichkeiten für die historische Fachinformation

'Relevante Informationen aus einer immer schneller wachsenden Publikationsmenge gezielt und schnell herauszufiltern, ist heute ohne elektronische Hilfsmittel nicht mehr möglich. Online-Datenbanken spielen in der Fachinformation deshalb heute eine zentrale Rolle, aber mit ihren Nutzungsmögichkeiten in den historischen Wissenschaften hat man sich in Deutschland bisher so gut wie nicht beschäftigt. Die vorliegende Arbeit bemüht sich, dieses Defizit abzubauen und damit einen Beitrag in der Diskussion um den Aufbau einer elektronischen historischen Fachinformation zu leisten. Den Kern bildet ein Überblick über die relevanten Online-Datenbanken: angefangen bei historischen Fachbibliographien, Bibliographien aus Nachbardisziplinen und Nationalbibliographien, über Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, die im Volltext vorliegen, bis hin zu historischen Projekten auf dem Internet. Den Hintergrund bildet die Veränderung der Informationsinfrastruktur, die sich mit der Entwicklung des Computers vollzogen hat und weiter vollzieht und die zu einer Etablierung von Datenbanken, Online-Diensten und einer elektronischen Öffentlichkeit geführt hat. Das Wachstum dieser 'elektronischen Bibliothek' erhält dabei durch neue elektronische Speicher- und Zugriffsmöglichkeiten, wie sie in steigendem Maße in Dokumentations-, Bibliotheks- und Archivwesen eingesetzt werden, weitere Impulse. Es wird den vergeblichen Bemühungen um den Aufbau eines historischen Fachinformationssystems im Rahmen der staatlichen Fachinformationspolitik in den siebziger Jahren nachgegangen und die Anfänge des Computerseinsatzes in der Geschichtswissenschaft seit Ende der fünfziger Jahre skizziert. Das Konzept von History Online, einem Online-Dienst für alle, die mit historischen Informationen befaßt sind, bildet gleichsam Schlußfolgerung und Quintessenz der Arbeit.' (Autorenreferat
