Information support and interactive planning in the digital factory : approach and industry-driven evaluation
In the modern world we are continuously surrounded by information. The human brain has to analyse and interpret this information to transform into useable knowledge that is then used in decision making activities. The advent and implementation of Industry 4.0 will make it a requirement for systems within factories to interact and share large quantities of information with each other. This large volume of information will make it even more difficult for the human resources within the factory to sift through the large amount of information required since there is a limit to the information that our brains can cope with. Just in time information retrieval (JITIR) within the digital factory environment aims to provide support to the human stakeholders in the system by proactively yet non-intrusively providing the required information at the right time based on the users context. This paper will therefore provide an insight into the cognitive difficulties experienced by humans in the digital factory and how JITIR can tackle these challenges. By validating the JITIR concept, several industry scenarios have been evaluated: an exemplary model, concerning the machine tool industry, is presented in the paper. Toward an Aesthetics of New-Media Environments
In this paper I suggest that, over and above the need to explore and understand the technological newness of computer art works, there is a need to address the aesthetic signiïŹcance of the changes and effects that such technological newness brings about, considering the whole environmental transaction pertaining to new media, including what they can or do offer and what users do or can do with such offerings, and how this whole package is integrated into our living spaces and activities. I argue that, given the primacy of computer-based interaction in the new-media, the notion of âornamentalityâ indicates the ground-ïŹoor aesthetics of new-media environments. I locate ornamentality not only in the logically constitutive principles of the new-media (hypertextuality and interactivity) but also in their multiform cultural embodiments (decoration as cultural interface). I utilize Kendall Waltonâs theory of ornamentality in order to construe a puzzle pertaining to the ornamental erosion of information in new-media environments. I argue that insofar as we consider new-media to be conduits of âreal-lifeâ, the excessive density of ornamental devices prevalent in certain new-media environments forces us to conduct our inquiries under conditions of neustic uncertainty, that is, uncertainty concerning the kind of relationship that we, the users, have to the propositional content mediated. I conclude that this puzzle calls our attention to a peculiar interrogatory complexity inherent in any game of knowledge-seeking conducted across the infosphere, which is not restricted to the simplest form of data retrieval, especially in mixed-reality environments and when the knowledge sought is embodied mimetically

Dynamic Animations of Journal Maps: Indicators of Structural Changes and Interdisciplinary Developments
The dynamic analysis of structural change in the organization of the sciences
requires methodologically the integration of multivariate and time-series
analysis. Structural change--e.g., interdisciplinary development--is often an
objective of government interventions. Recent developments in multi-dimensional
scaling (MDS) enable us to distinguish the stress originating in each
time-slice from the stress originating from the sequencing of time-slices, and
thus to locally optimize the trade-offs between these two sources of variance
in the animation. Furthermore, visualization programs like Pajek and Visone
allow us to show not only the positions of the nodes, but also their relational
attributes like betweenness centrality. Betweenness centrality in the vector
space can be considered as an indicator of interdisciplinarity. Using this
indicator, the dynamics of the citation impact environments of the journals
Cognitive Science, Social Networks, and Nanotechnology are animated and
assessed in terms of interdisciplinarity among the disciplines involved
