The Present and Future of Museum Accessibility for People with Visual Impairments

    Get PDF
People with visual impairments (PVI) have shown interest in visiting museums and enjoying visual art. Based on this knowledge, some museums provide tactile reproductions of artworks, specialized tours for PVI, or enable them to schedule accessible visits. However, the ability of PVI to visit museums is still dependent on the assistance they get from their family and friends or from the museum personnel. In this paper, we surveyed 19 PVI to understand their opinions and expectations about visiting museums independently, as well as the requirements of user interfaces to support it. Moreover, we increase the knowledge about the previous experiences, motivations and accessibility issues of PVI in museums

Development of Accessible Museum for Blind Tourists

As we know that museums store a lot of visual objects. So that blind people who do not have vision will have difficulty enjoying the visual objects of the museum. This study discusses the tourist attractions of the museum that can be enjoyed by blind tourists. To support this research, a qualitative research method with a case study approach was used. The results showed that blind tourists enjoyed museum attractions in two ways, hearing and touching. Information will be received by listening to museum educators explain stories about visual objects. Then to add information, blind tourists can touch the visual object. Accessibility that needs to be developed in Museum of the Asian African Conference is guiding block, braille, and audio media. Museum educators can be trained to be able to guide blind tourists properly

3D technologies have been applied to resources that expand the access of people with visual impairments to museum objects. The purpose of this article is to discuss the importance of including visually impaired users in the design of these resources. To this end, a literature review was developed on the access of people with visual disabilities to museum objects, the possibilities of applying 3D technologies in this area and projects developed with co-participation. The inclusion of visually impaired people in project teams adds contributions and recommendations not centered on visual culture. The improvements resulting from this inclusion show great potential for applicability and should involve decisions from the scales for reproduction of the models to the selection of printing techniques and materials. However, expanding this inclusion requires the development of inclusive tools, methods and training.

Physical Accessibility and Historic Preservation in Historic House Museums of the Southeast

Museums are a public good, as they provide educational recreation and preserve cultural history, and so it is crucial that they are physically accessible to as many visitors as possible. The aim of this study was to understand what architectural features of historic house museums are the least accessible and what has been done to ameliorate these challenges. The survey used in the study was developed using the guidelines for making historic buildings accessible as described in the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards. It was distributed by email to representatives of 220 historic sites, of which 79 responded. The results suggested that the number of visitors to a site is essentially irrelevant to what level of accessibility the historic house possesses. A site’s budget often, but not always, influences the accessibility measures available for visitors. Many museum administrators describe barriers to increased accessibility in the form of limitations imposed by regulatory bodies and the risk of damaging the houses’ historical integrity. Even so, building stewards are generally enthusiastic about expanding accessibility and want to find ways to implement measures compatible with their buildings’ historic fabric
