    Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). Phase B: Data capture facility definition study

    The National Aeronautics and Aerospace Administration (NASA) and the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) initiated the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) to obtain more accurate measurements of tropical rainfall then ever before. The measurements are to improve scientific understanding and knowledge of the mechanisms effecting the intra-annual and interannual variability of the Earth's climate. The TRMM is largely dependent upon the handling and processing of the data by the TRMM Ground System supporting the mission. The objective of the TRMM is to obtain three years of climatological determinations of rainfall in the tropics, culminating in data sets of 30-day average rainfall over 5-degree square areas, and associated estimates of vertical distribution of latent heat release. The scope of this study is limited to the functions performed by TRMM Data Capture Facility (TDCF). These functions include capturing the TRMM spacecraft return link data stream; processing the data in the real-time, quick-look, and routine production modes, as appropriate; and distributing real time, quick-look, and production data products to users. The following topics are addressed: (1) TRMM end-to-end system description; (2) TRMM mission operations concept; (3) baseline requirements; (4) assumptions related to mission requirements; (5) external interface; (6) TDCF architecture and design options; (7) critical issues and tradeoffs; and (8) recommendation for the final TDCF selection process

    Comparing multimedia storage architectures

    Multimedia interfaces increase the need for large image databases, capable of storing and reading streams of data with strict synchronicity and isochronicity requirements. In order to fulfil these requirements, we use a parallel image server architecture which relies on arrays of intelligent disk nodes, each disk node being composed of one processor and one or more disks. This contribution analyzes through simulation the real-time behavior of two multiprocessor multi-disk architectures: GigaView and the Unix workstation cluster. GigaView incorporates point-to-point communication between processing units and the workstation cluster supports communication through a shared bus-and-memory architecture. For a standard multimedia server architecture consisting of 8 disks and 4 disk-node processors, we evaluate stream frame access times under various parameters such as load factors, frame size, stream throughput and synchronicity requirements.     Speculation in Parallel and Distributed Event Processing Systems

    Event stream processing (ESP) applications enable the real-time processing of continuous flows of data. Algorithmic trading, network monitoring, and processing data from sensor networks are good examples of applications that traditionally rely upon ESP systems. In addition, technological advances are resulting in an increasing number of devices that are network enabled, producing information that can be automatically collected and processed. This increasing availability of on-line data motivates the development of new and more sophisticated applications that require low-latency processing of large volumes of data. ESP applications are composed of an acyclic graph of operators that is traversed by the data. Inside each operator, the events can be transformed, aggregated, enriched, or filtered out. Some of these operations depend only on the current input events, such operations are called stateless. Other operations, however, depend not only on the current event, but also on a state built during the processing of previous events. Such operations are, therefore, named stateful. As the number of ESP applications grows, there are increasingly strong requirements, which are often difficult to satisfy. In this dissertation, we address two challenges created by the use of stateful operations in a ESP application: (i) stateful operators can be bottlenecks because they are sensitive to the order of events and cannot be trivially parallelized by replication; and (ii), if failures are to be tolerated, the accumulated state of an stateful operator needs to be saved, saving this state traditionally imposes considerable performance costs. Our approach is to evaluate the use of speculation to address these two issues. For handling ordering and parallelization issues in a stateful operator, we propose a speculative approach that both reduces latency when the operator must wait for the correct ordering of the events and improves throughput when the operation in hand is parallelizable. In addition, our approach does not require that user understand concurrent programming or that he or she needs to consider out-of-order execution when writing the operations. For fault-tolerant applications, traditional approaches have imposed prohibitive performance costs due to pessimistic schemes.     Latency-Aware Strategies for Placing Data Stream Analytics onto Edge Computing

    International audienceMuch of the "big data" generated today is received in near real-time and requires quick analysis. In Internet of Things (IoT) [1, 9], for instance, continuous data streams produced by multiple sources must be handled under very short delays. As a result, several stream processing engines have been proposed. Under several engines, a stream processing application is a directed graph or dataflow whose vertices are operators that execute a function over the incoming data and edges that define how data flows between them. A dataflow has one or multiple sources (i.e., sensors, gateways or actuators), operators that perform transformations on the data (e.g., filtering, mapping, and aggregation) and sinks (i.e., queries that consume or store the data). In a traditional cloud deployment, the whole application is placed in the cloud computing to benefit from virtually unlimited resources. However, processing all the data in the cloud can introduce latency due to data transfer, which makes near real-time processing difficult to achieve. In contrast, edge computing has become an attractive solution for performing certain stream processing operators, as many edge devices have non-trivial compute capacity. The deployment of data stream processing applications onto heterogeneous infrastructure has been proved to be NP-hard [2]. Moving operators from cloud to edge devices is challenging due to limitations of edge devices [5]. Existing work often proposes placements strategies considering user intervention [8]. Many models do not support memory and communication constraints [6, 4] while others consider all data sinks to be located in the cloud, with no feedback loop to actua-tors located at the edge of the network [3, 7]. There is a lack of solutions covering scenarios involving smart cities, precision agriculture, and smart homes comprising various heterogeneous sensors and actuators, as well as, time-constraint applications. We model the data stream processing placement problem considering heterogeneous computational and network resources, and computing and communication as M/M/1 queues (i.e., Poisson arrival distribution, exponential service time and single server). Events are handled in a First-Come, First-Served fashion both by the computation and communication services, guaranteeing the time order of events; an important requirement in many data stream processing applications. The model allows us to calculate the waiting and service times for each message in computation and communication queues allowing for estimating the response time. We then propose two strategies to minimize the application response time by splitting the dataflow graph dynamically and distributing the operators across cloud and edge infrastructure. We focus on real-time analytics applications with multiple sources and sinks distributed across resources. In particular, we first decompose the application graph by considering behaviors such as forks and joins (i.e., split points), and by identifying the operator dependencies recursively. The Response Time Rate (RTR) strategy takes the decomposed graph and organizes the deployment sequence and consecutively calculates the response time for each operator by considering the previous mappings, resource capabilities, and operator requirements. RTR with Region Patterns (RTR+RP) strategy extends RTR by exploiting the split points to first find candidate operators for edge or cloud and then estimates the response time for the edge operators. Comprehensive simulations considering multiple application configurations demonstrate that our approach can improve the response time up to 50%. For future work, we will investigate further techniques to deal with CPU-intensive operators and their energy consumption

The project focuses on the Lambda Architecture proposed by Marz and its application to obtain real-time data processing. The architecture is a solution that unites the benefits of the batch and stream processing techniques. Data can be historically processed with high precision and involved algorithms without loss of short-term information, alerts and insights. Lambda Architecture has an ability to serve a wide range of use cases and workloads that withstands hardware and human mistakes. The layered architecture enhances loose coupling and flexibility in the system. This a huge benefit that allows understanding the trade-offs and application of various tools and technologies across the layers. There has been an advancement in the approach of building the LA due to improvements in the underlying tools. The project demonstrates a simplified architecture for the LA that is maintainable
