This PhD project, linked to the area of concentration Language and Education in Applied Linguistics Program (PPG-LA/IEL/UNICAMP) focus on otaku culture, mainly on the audiovisual productions belonging to the portal animemusicvideos.org (the org), community whose goal is the elaboration and distribution of Japanese animations remixes called Anime Music Videos (AMVs). We seek to describe the AMVs produced in this context according to the theories of Bakhtin and his Circle and thereby outline a Bakhtinian framework of analysis for remix videos that can provide directions for the construction of pedagogical parameters centered on the conception of New Literacies and Pedagogy of Multiliteracies. To do so, we propose to integrate an enunciative-discursive perspective formulated for the verbal language with an analysis objective method of multimodal objects through a mixed research design, quantitative and qualitative, based on statistical distributions of formal choices and stylistic. The corpus prepared for description and analysis from data visualization techniques (mostly, Manovich and Navas), will allow us to create images and graphics to reveal relationships and patterns in our collection of audiovisual data. Therefore, this methodological approach aims to provide productive transitions between the concepts proposed by Bakhtin and his Circle (mostly, architectonic) and analysis of editing and video editing tools (mostly, Amiel and Horwatt)DoutoradoLinguagem e EducaçãoDoutor em Linguística Aplicada2015/22567-8, 2017/08441-7FAPES

    Get PDF
The editors of Copy(write): Intellectual Property in the Writing Classroom bring together stories, theories, and research that can further inform the ways in which we situate and address intellectual property issues in our writing classrooms. The essays in the collection identify and describe a wide range of pedagogical strategies, consider theories, present research, explore approaches, and offer both cautionary tales and local and contextual successes that can further inform the ways in which we situate and address intellectual property issues in our teaching.https://digitalcommons.liberty.edu/textbooks/1003/thumbnail.jp

    Electronic Literature as Digital Humanities

    Get PDF
This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Electronic Literature as Digital Humanities: Contexts, Forms & Practices is a volume of essays that provides a detailed account of born-digital literature by artists and scholars who have contributed to its birth and evolution. Rather than offering a prescriptive definition of electronic literature, this book takes an ontological approach through descriptive exploration, treating electronic literature from the perspective of the digital humanities (DH)––that is, as an area of scholarship and practice that exists at the juncture between the literary and the algorithmic. The domain of DH is typically segmented into the two seemingly disparate strands of criticism and building, with scholars either studying the synthesis between cultural expression and screens or the use of technology to make artifacts in themselves. This book regards electronic literature as fundamentally DH in that it synthesizes these two constituents. Electronic Literature as Digital Humanities provides a context for the development of the field, informed by the forms and practices that have emerged throughout the DH moment, and finally, offers resources for others interested in learning more about electronic literature

Mosaic narrative a poetics of cinematic new media narrative

    Get PDF
This thesis proposes the Poetics of Mosaic Narrative as a tool for theorising the creation and telling of cinematic stories in a digital environment. As such the Poetics of Mosaic Narrative is designed to assist creators of new media narrative to design dramatically compelling screen based stories by drawing from established theories of cinema and emerging theories of new media. In doing so it validates the crucial element of cinematic storytelling in the digital medium, which due to its fragmentary, variable and re-combinatory nature, affords the opportunity for audience interaction. The Poetics of Mosaic Narrative re-asserts the dramatic and cinematic nature of narrative in new media by drawing upon the dramatic theory of Aristotle’s Poetics, the cinematic theories of the 1920s Russian Film Theorists and contemporary Neo-Formalists, the narrative theories of the 1960s French Structuralists, and the scriptwriting theories of contemporary cinema. In particular it focuses on the theory and practice of the prominent new media theorist, Lev Manovich, as a means of investigating and creating a practical poetics. The key element of the Poetics of Mosaic Narrative is the expansion of the previously forgotten and undeveloped Russian Formalist concept of cinematurgy which is vital to the successful development of new media storytelling theory and practice. This concept, as originally proposed but not elaborated by Kazansky, encompasses the notion of the creation of cinematic new media narrative as a mosaic – integrally driven by the narrative systems of plot, as well as the cinematic systems of visual style created by the techniques of cinema- montage, cinematography and mise-en-scene

The Consumption of English-language Music Videos on YouTube in Japan

    Get PDF
Euro-American (Western) popular music has been imported, performed and adapted to Japanese musical sensibilities since 1854. It influenced Japanese popular music throughout the 20th century and can be heard everywhere these days in shops, on university campuses, at school festivals, on the radio and television, and at the live shows of touring artists. Although record sales indicate the dominance of the domestic industry, especially the J-pop market, young Japanese people are actively consuming Western music through YouTube. This study demonstrates the eclectic musical tastes of young Japanese people today and the role of YouTube as a music platform. Using a mixed methods approach that combines a survey of over 500 university undergraduates with interviews and focus group work with 82 students, a rich description is presented of the ways in which music videos on YouTube are consumed mainly through mobile digital devices. The data show that the music videos themselves are watched with varying levels of engagement because music provides a background accompaniment to other activities much of the time. Nevertheless, certain types of music video, such as those with skilful dancing, great originality, or a dramatic storyline, tend to attract higher levels of engagement and repeated viewings. The role of English-language lyrics and the priority given to melody and rhythm are also explored. Although many of the YouTube viewing practices of young Japanese audiences resemble those of their Western counterparts, this study highlights attitudes, values and expectations of Japanese and non-Japanese artists that are unique to Japanese audiences. In doing so, it underscores the need for investigating global phenomena in local (non-Western) contexts and sharing those findings to build a more accurate understanding of music video consumption through YouTube worldwide
