    Global sensitivity analysis based on DIRECT-KG-HDMR and thermal optimization of pin-fin heat sink for the platform inertial navigation system

    In this study, in order to reduce the local high temperature of the platform in inertial navigation system (PINS), a pin-fin heat sink with staggered arrangement is designed. To reduce the dimension of the inputs and improve the efficiency of optimization, a feasible global sensitivity analysis (GSA) based on Kriging-High Dimensional Model Representation with DIviding RECTangles sampling strategy (DIRECT-KG-HDMR) is proposed. Compared with other GSA methods, the proposed method can indicate the effects of the structural and the material parameters on the maximum temperature at the bottom of the heat sink by using both sensitivity and coupling coefficients. From the results of GSA, it can be found that the structural parameters have greater effects on thermal performance than the material ones. Moreover, the coupling intensities between the structural and material parameters are weak. Therefore, the structural parameters are selected to optimize the thermal performance of the heat sink, and several popular optimization algorithms such as GA, DE, TLBO, PSO and EGO are used for the optimization. Moreover, steady thermal response of the PINS with the optimized heat sink is also studied, and its result shows that the maximum temperature of high temperature region of the platform is reduced by 1.09 degree Celsius compared with the PINS without the heat sink.Comment: 34 pages, 18 figures, 5 table

    MEMS sensors as physical unclonable functions

    A fundamental requirement of any crypto system is that secret-key material remains securely stored so that it is robust in withstanding attacks including physical tampering. In this context, physical unclonable functions (PUFs) have been proposed to store cryptographic secrets in a particularly secure manner. In this thesis, the feasibility of using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors for secure key storage purposes is evaluated for the first time. To this end, we investigated an off-the-shelf 3-axis MEMS gyroscope design and used its properties to derive a unique fingerprint from each sensor. We thoroughly examined the robustness of the derived fingerprints against temperature variation and aging. We extracted stable keys with nearly full entropy from the fingerprints. The security level of the extracted keys lies in a range between 27 bits and 150 bits depending on the applied test conditions and the used entropy estimation method. Moreover, we provide experimental evidence that the extractable key length is higher in practice when multiple wafers are considered. In addition, it is shown that further improvements could be achieved by using more precise measurement techniques and by optimizing the MEMS design. The robustness of a MEMS PUF against tampering and malicious read-outs was tested by three different types of physical attacks. We could show that MEMS PUFs provide a high level of protection due to the sensitivity of their characteristics to disassembly.Eine grundlegende Anforderung jedes Kryptosystems ist, dass der verwendete geheime Schlüssel sicher und geschützt aufbewahrt wird. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurden physikalisch unklonbare Funktionen (PUFs) vorgeschlagen, um kryptographische Geheimnisse besonders sicher zu speichern. In dieser Arbeit wird erstmals die Verwendbarkeit von mikroelektromechanischen Systemen (MEMS) für die sichere Schlüsselspeicherung anhand eines 3-achsigen MEMS Drehratensensor gezeigt. Dabei werden die Eigenschaften der Sensoren zur Ableitung eines eindeutigen Fingerabdrucks verwendet. Die Temperatur- und Langzeitstabilität der abgeleiteten Fingerabdrücke wurde ausführlich untersucht. Aus den Fingerabdrücken wurden stabile Schlüssel mit einem Sicherheitsniveau zwischen 27 Bit und 150 Bit, abhängig von den Testbedingungen und der verwendeten Entropie-Schätzmethode, extrahiert. Außerdem konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Schlüssellänge ansteigt, je mehr Wafer betrachtet werden. Darüber hinaus wurde die Verwendung einer präziseren Messtechnik und eine Optimierung des MEMS-Designs als potentielle Verbesserungsmaßnahmen identifiziert. Die Robustheit einer MEMS PUF gegen Manipulationen und feindseliges Auslesen durch verschiedene Arten von physikalischen Angriffen wurde untersucht. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass MEMS PUFs aufgrund der Empfindlichkeit ihrer Eigenschaften hinsichtlich einer Öffnung des Mold-Gehäuses eine hohe Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber invasiven Angriffen aufweisen

    VISUAL ATTITUDE PROPAGATION FOR SMALL SATELLITES

    As electronics become smaller and more capable, it has become possible to conduct meaningful and sophisticated satellite missions in a small form factor. However, the capability of small satellites and the range of possible applications are limited by the capabilities of several technologies, including attitude determination and control systems. This dissertation evaluates the use of image-based visual attitude propagation as a compliment or alternative to other attitude determination technologies that are suitable for miniature satellites. The concept lies in using miniature cameras to track image features across frames and extracting the underlying rotation. The problem of visual attitude propagation as a small satellite attitude determination system is addressed from several aspects: related work, algorithm design, hardware and performance evaluation, possible applications, and on-orbit experimentation. These areas of consideration reflect the organization of this dissertation. A “stellar gyroscope” is developed, which is a visual star-based attitude propagator that uses relative motion of stars in an imager’s field of view to infer the attitude changes. The device generates spacecraft relative attitude estimates in three degrees of freedom. Algorithms to perform the star detection, correspondence, and attitude propagation are presented. The Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) approach is applied to the correspondence problem to successfully pair stars across frames while mitigating false-positive and false-negative star detections. This approach provides tolerance to the noise levels expected in using miniature optics and no baffling, and the noise caused by radiation dose on orbit. The hardware design and algorithms are validated using test images of the night sky. The application of the stellar gyroscope as part of a CubeSat attitude determination and control system is described. The stellar gyroscope is used to augment a MEMS gyroscope attitude propagation algorithm to minimize drift in the absence of an absolute attitude sensor. The stellar gyroscope is a technology demonstration experiment on KySat-2, a 1-Unit CubeSat being developed in Kentucky that is in line to launch with the NASA ELaNa CubeSat Launch Initiative. It has also been adopted by industry as a sensor for CubeSat Attitude Determination and Control Systems (ADCS)

    Micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) devices are widely used for inertia, pressure, and ultrasound sensing applications. Research on integrated MEMS technology has undergone extensive development driven by the requirements of a compact footprint, low cost, and increased functionality. Accelerometers are among the most widely used sensors implemented in MEMS technology. MEMS accelerometers are showing a growing presence in almost all industries ranging from automotive to medical. A traditional MEMS accelerometer employs a proof mass suspended to springs, which displaces in response to an external acceleration. A single proof mass can be used for one- or multi-axis sensing. A variety of transduction mechanisms have been used to detect the displacement. They include capacitive, piezoelectric, thermal, tunneling, and optical mechanisms. Capacitive accelerometers are widely used due to their DC measurement interface, thermal stability, reliability, and low cost. However, they are sensitive to electromagnetic field interferences and have poor performance for high-end applications (e.g., precise attitude control for the satellite). Over the past three decades, steady progress has been made in the area of optical accelerometers for high-performance and high-sensitivity applications but several challenges are still to be tackled by researchers and engineers to fully realize opto-mechanical accelerometers, such as chip-scale integration, scaling, low bandwidth, etc

    Sensor-Based Adaptive Control and Optimization of Lower-Limb Prosthesis.

    Recent developments in prosthetics have enabled the development of powered prosthetic ankles (PPA). The advent of such technologies drastically improved impaired gait by increasing balance and reducing metabolic energy consumption by providing net positive power. However, control challenges limit performance and feasibility of today’s devices. With addition of sensors and motors, PPA systems should continuously make control decisions and adapt the system by manipulating control parameters of the prostheses. There are multiple challenges in optimization and control of PPAs. A prominent challenge is the objective setup of the system and calibration parameters to fit each subject. Another is whether it is possible to detect changes in intention and terrain before prosthetic use and how the system should react and adapt to it. In the first part of this study, a model for energy expenditure was proposed using electromyogram (EMG) signals from the residual lower-limbs PPA users. The proposed model was optimized to minimize energy expenditure. Optimization was performed using a modified Nelder-Mead approach with a Latin Hypercube sampling. Results of the proposed method were compared to expert values and it was shown to be a feasible alternative for tuning in a shorter time. In the second part of the study, the control challenges regarding lack of adaptivity for PPAs was investigated. The current PPA system used is enhanced with impedance-controlled parameters that allow the system to provide different assistance. However, current systems are set to a fixed value and fail to acknowledge various terrain and intentions throughout the day. In this study, a pseudo-real-time adaptive control system was proposed to predict the changes in the gait and provide a smoother gait. The proposed control system used physiological, kinetic, and kinematic data and fused them to predict the change. The prediction was done using machine learning-based methods. Results of the study showed an accuracy of up to 89.7 percent for prediction of change for four different cases

    Multi-Sensor Inertial Measurement System for Analysis of Sports Motion

    A portable motion analysis system that can accurately measure body movement kinematics and kinetics has the potential to benefit athletes and coaches in performance improvement and injury prevention. In addition, such a system can allow researchers to collect data without limitations of time and location. In this dissertation, a portable multi-sensor human motion analysis algorithm is been developed based on inertial measurement technology. The algorithm includes a newly designed coordinate flow chart analysis method to systematically construct rotation matrices for multi-Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) application. Using this system, overhead throwing is investigated to reconstruct arm trajectory, arm rotation velocities, as well as torque and force imposed on the elbow and shoulder. Based on this information, different motion features can be established, such as kinematic chain timing as demonstrated in this work. Human subject experiments are used to validate the functionality of the method and the accuracy of the kinematics reconstruction results. Single axis rotation rig experiments are used to shown that this multi-IMU system and algorithm provides an improved in accuracy on arm rotation calculation over the conventional video camera based motion capture system. Finally, a digital filter with switchable cut-off frequency is developed and demonstrated in its application to the IMU-based sports motion signals. The switchable filter method is not limited only to IMUs, but may be applied to any type of motion sensing technology. With the techniques developed in this work, it will be possible in the near future to use portable and accurate sports motion analysis systems in training, rehabilitation and scientific research on sports biomechanics

    Piezoelectric Fused Silica Resonators for Timing References.

    MEMS resonators have the capability to match or exceed the performance of state-of-the-art quartz timing references at a fraction of the size, power, and cost. To enable this capability, this work investigates the use of fused silica as a substrate for piezoelectrically actuated resonators for applications in timing references. This thesis presents the design and fabrication of a piezoelectrically actuated fused silica resonator. The fabricated resonators show a quality factor (Q) of 19,671 at 4.96 MHz with an insertion loss of 16.9 dB, and is the first reported example of a piezoelectrically actuated fused silica resonator in literature. An in-depth investigation into loss mechanisms in fused silica is performed in order to identify and address the major losses in the device and maximize potential performance. Multiple experimental and analytical investigations are presented, with a new form of loss, known as charge redistribution, presented as a possible dominant loss in these piezoelectric resonators. This loss mechanism is analytically modeled and simulated to have a Q of 25,100, within 20% of the experimentally measured devices. The temperature sensitivity of fused silica is also addressed; as fused silica shows a temperature coefficient of elasticity almost three times higher than that shown in uncompensated silicon. Both active and passive methods of temperature compensation are implemented, including a fused silica ovenized platform and nickel-refilled trenches for temperature compensation. The nickel-refilled trenches are shown to reduce temperature sensitivity in piezoelectrically actuated fused silica resonators from 78 ppm/K to 50 ppm/K, with larger compensation possible but complete compensation infeasible from passive techniques alone. From this, a dual-mode system is proposed for use in ovenized systems where two modes are simultaneously activated in a single device volume. In this system, one mode acts as a stable reference frequency and the second mode acts as a temperature sensor, allowing for extremely accurate ovenization. A silicon-based prototype is developed, showing a +14 ppm/K temperature difference between the two modes, with additional temperature differential possible through the addition of material-based passive compensation.PHDElectrical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Technologies for single chip integrated optical gyroscopes

    Optical gyroscopes are being employed for navigational purposes for decades now and have achieved comparable or better reliability and performance than rotor-based gyroscopes. Mechanical gyros are however generally bulky, heavy and consume more power which make them unsuitable for miniaturized applications such as cube satellites and drones etc. Therefore, much effort is being expended worldwide to fabricate optical gyros having tactical grade robustness and reliability, small size, weight, cost and power consumption with minimal sacrifice of sensitivity. Integrated optics is an obvious approach to achieving this. This work comprises detailed comparative analysis of different types and structures of integrated optical gyroscopes to find out the suitable option for applications which require a resolution of <10 o/h. Based on the numerical analysis, Add-drop ring resonator-based gyro is found to be a suitable structure for integration which has a predicted shot noise limited resolution of 27 o/h and 2.71 o/h for propagation losses of 0.1 dB/cm and 0.01 dB/cm respectively. An integrated gyro is composed of several optical components which include a laser, 3dB couplers, phase/frequency modulators, sensing cavity and photodetectors. This requires hybrid integration of multiple materials technologies and so choices about which component should be implemented in which technology. This project also undertakes theoretical optimization of few of the above-mentioned optical components in materials systems that might offer the most convenient/tolerant option, this including 3dB coupler, thermo-optic phase modulator and sensing cavity (resonator and waveguide loop). In particular, the sensing element requires very low propagation loss waveguides which can best be realised from Si3N4 or Ta2O5. The optimised Si3N4 or Ta2O5 waveguides however are not optimal for other functions and this is shown and alternatives explored where the Si3N4 or Ta2O5 can easily be co-integrated. The fabrication process of low loss Si3N4 and Ta2O5 waveguides are also reported in this thesis. Si3N4 films were grown by using low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) technique. Dry etching of Si3N4 films have been optimized to produce smooth and vertical sidewalls. Experimental results predicted that the propagation loss of 0.009 dB/cm is achievable by using optimum waveguide dimensions and silica cladding with the relatively standard processes available within the Laser Physics Centre at the Australian National University. A CMOS back end of line compatible method was developed to deposit good quality Ta2O5 films and silica claddings through ion beam sputtering (IBS) method. Plasma etching of Ta2O5 waveguides has been demonstrated by using a gas combination of CHF3/SF6/Ar/O2. Oxygen was introduced into the chamber to produce non-vertical sidewalls, so the waveguides could be cladded without voids with IBS silica. Average propagation losses of 0.17 dB/cm were achieved from Ta2O5 waveguides which appeared after extensive investigation to be limited by the spatial inhomogeneity of the processing. Lastly, a detailed theoretical and experimental analysis was performed to find out the possible causes of the higher average propagation loss in Ta2O5 waveguides, some sections being observed with 0.02 dB/cm or lower losses
