    Mixed-model assembly line balancing problem in multi-demand scenarios

    The mixed-model assembly line balancing problem (MMALBP) in multi-demand scenarios is investigated, which addresses demand fluctuations for each product in each scenario. The objective is to minimize the sum of costs associated with tasks allocation, workstation activation, and penalty costs for unbalanced workloads. A mixed integer programming model is developed to consider the constraint of workstation space capacity. A phased heuristic algorithm is designed to solve the problem. The computational results show that considering demand fluctuations in multiple demand scenarios leads to more balanced workstation loads and improved assembly line production efficiency. Finally, sensitivity analysis of important parameters is conducted to summarize the impact of parameter changes on the results and provide practical management insights

    Hybrid metaheuristics for the accessibility windows assembly line balancing problem level 2 (AWALBP-L2)

    This paper addresses an assembly line balancing problem in which the length of the workpieces is larger than the width of the workstations. The problem differs from traditional variants of assembly line balancing in the sense that only a portion of the workpiece, or portions of two consecutive workpieces, can be reached from any workstation. Consequently, at any stationary stage of the cycle, each workstation can only process a portion of the tasks, namely, those which are inside the area of a workpiece that is reachable from the workstation. The objective is to find a (cyclic) movement scheme of the workpieces along the line and a task assignment to stationary stages of the production process, while minimizing the cycle time. We propose three hybrid approaches of metaheuristics and mathematical programming - one based on simulated annealing and the other two based on tabu search, relying on different neighborhood definitions. The two former approaches make use of a classical neighborhood, obtained by applying local changes to a current solution. The latter approach, in contrast, draws ideas from the corridor method to define a corridor around the current solution, via the imposition of exogenous constraints on the solution space of the problem. An extensive computational experiment is carried out to test the performance of the proposed approaches, improving the best results published to date.Postprint (author's final draft

In the literature, there are many studies, which consider these two tightly interrelated problems individually. However, we integrate the model sequencing problem in the line balancing procedure to obtain a more efficient solution for the problem of Simultaneous Balancing and Sequencing of Mixed-Model Parallel Two-Sided Assembly Lines. A mathematical model is developed to present the problem and a novel agent based ant colony optimisation approach is proposed as the solution method. Different agents interact with each other to find a near optimal solution for the problem. Each ant selects a random behaviour from a predefined list of heuristics and builds a solution using this behaviour as a local search rule along with the pheromone value. Different cycle times are allowed for different two-sided lines located in parallel to each other and this yields a complex problem where different production cycles need to be considered to build a feasible solution. The performance of the proposed approach is tested through a set of test cases. Experimental results indicate that considering model sequencing problem with the line balancing problem together helps minimise line length and total number of required workstations. Also, it is found that the proposed approach outperforms other three heuristics tested

    A new model for supply chain network design with integrated assembly line balancing decisions

    Supply chain network design aims at the integration of the different actors of a supply chain within a single framework in order to optimise the total profit of the system. In this paper, we consider the integration of line balancing issues within the tactical decisions of the supply chain, and we offer a novel model and a solution approach for the problem. The new approach decomposes the problem into multiple line balancing problems and a mixed integer linear model, which is easier to solve than the previously available non-linear mixed integer formulation. The results show that the new method is able to solve previously studied models within a fraction of the reported running times, and also allows us to solve larger instances than those reported in earlier works. Finally, we also provide some analysis on the influence of the cost structure, the demand and the structure of the assembly process on the final configuration of the assemblies and the distribution network.Postprint (author's final draft

    Executive Compensation, Firm Performance, and Net Community Benefits Within Nonprofit Urban Hospitals

    Nonprofit hospitals are under increased pressure to maintain financial stability and compliance with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) net community benefit requirements. Boards of directors are not always confident that the compensation packages awarded to executives stimulate them to act in the organization\u27s best interest. The principal-agent theory formed the basis of this correlational study. Archival data from National Center for Charitable Statistics, Guidestar, and the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services were collected from 117 nonprofit urban hospitals for the fiscal year 2013. Regression analysis was used to determine the significance of relationships between return on assets (ROA), change in net assets (profit), and net community benefits expense and average executive compensation (AEC). ROA and profit demonstrated a significant relationship with AEC. The direction of the relationship between profit and AEC was positive while the relationship with ROA and AEC was negative. There was no significant relationship between net community benefit and AEC. The implications for positive social change include improved understand of executive compensation alignment, job creation, and IRS net community benefits expense requirements. Lawmakers may use the information to create legislation related to net community benefits expense requirements

    Energy Efficient Policies, Scheduling, and Design for Sustainable Manufacturing Systems

    Climate mitigation, more stringent regulations, rising energy costs, and sustainable manufacturing are pushing researchers to focus on energy efficiency, energy flexibility, and implementation of renewable energy sources in manufacturing systems. This thesis aims to analyze the main works proposed regarding these hot topics, and to fill the gaps in the literature. First, a detailed literature review is proposed. Works regarding energy efficiency in different manufacturing levels, in the assembly line, energy saving policies, and the implementation of renewable energy sources are analyzed. Then, trying to fill the gaps in the literature, different topics are analyzed more in depth. In the single machine context, a mathematical model aiming to align the manufacturing power required to a renewable energy supply in order to obtain the maximum profit is developed. The model is applied to a single work center powered by the electric grid and by a photovoltaic system; afterwards, energy storage is also added to the power system. Analyzing the job shop context, switch off policies implementing workload approach and scheduling considering variable speed of the machines and power constraints are proposed. The direct and indirect workloads of the machines are considered to support the switch on/off decisions. A simulation model is developed to test the proposed policies compared to others presented in the literature. Regarding the job shop scheduling, a fixed and variable power constraints are considered, assuming the minimization of the makespan as the objective function. Studying the factory level, a mathematical model to design a flow line considering the possibility of using switch-off policies is developed. The design model for production lines includes a targeted imbalance among the workstations to allow for defined idle time. Finally, the main findings, results, and the future directions and challenges are presented

    Principals’ leadership practices in promoting parental involvement in rural primary schools.

This study was undertaken using the case study research methodology in five rural primary schools. The primary aim of the study was to examine how the principals performed their leadership in promoting parental involvement in their schools. The study was conducted in five rural primary schools with the principals chosen purposefully to be participants. This study adopted a qualitative research approach within the interpretive paradigm in understanding the principals’ leadership practices in promoting parental involvement in primary schools. Literature was reviewed from international, African and national perspectives to gain insight into the study. Furthermore, the study was underpinned by two theories, they are Epstein’s overlapping spheres of influence and invitational theory. Semi-structured interviews were used to generate qualitative data and thematic analysis was used in analysing the data. The findings revealed that there are still factors that support the principals’ efforts and the inhibiting factors that inhibit the principals’ efforts in promoting parental involvement. The findings revealed that school principals of the researched primary schools used numerous strategies to mitigate those factors that inhibit their efforts
