System architecture of a web service for Content-Based Image Retrieval
This paper presents the system architecture of a Content-
Based Image Retrieval system implemented as a web service.
The proposed solution is composed of two parts, a client run-
ning a graphical user interface for query formulation and a
server where the search engine explores an image repository.
The separation of the user interface and the search engine
follows a Service as a Software (SaaS) model, a type of cloud
computing design where a single core system is online and
available to authorized clients. The proposed architecture
follows the REST software architecture and HTTP proto-
col for communications, two solutions that combined with
metadata coded in RDF, make the proposed system ready
for its integration in the semantic web. User queries are
formulated by visual examples through a graphical inter-
face and content is remotely accessed also through HTTP
communication. Visual descriptors and similarity measures
implemented in this work are mostly de ned in the MPEG-7
standard, while textual metadata is coded according to the

Multi-layer Architecture For Storing Visual Data Based on WCF and Microsoft SQL Server Database
In this paper we present a novel architecture for storing visual data.
Effective storing, browsing and searching collections of images is one of the
most important challenges of computer science. The design of architecture for
storing such data requires a set of tools and frameworks such as SQL database
management systems and service-oriented frameworks. The proposed solution is
based on a multi-layer architecture, which allows to replace any component
without recompilation of other components. The approach contains five
components, i.e. Model, Base Engine, Concrete Engine, CBIR service and
Presentation. They were based on two well-known design patterns: Dependency
Injection and Inverse of Control. For experimental purposes we implemented the
SURF local interest point detector as a feature extractor and -means
clustering as indexer. The presented architecture is intended for content-based

On the Use of XML in Medical Imaging Web-Based Applications
The rapid growth of digital technology in medical fields over recent years has increased the need for applications able to manage patient medical records, imaging data, and chart information. Web-based applications are implemented with the purpose to link digital databases, storage and transmission protocols, management of large volumes of data and security concepts, allowing the possibility to read, analyze, and even diagnose remotely from the medical center where the information was acquired. The objective of this paper is to analyze the use of the Extensible Markup Language (XML) language in web-based applications that aid in diagnosis or treatment of patients, considering how this protocol allows indexing and exchanging the huge amount of information associated with each medical case. A Benchmark for Image Retrieval using Distributed Systems over the Internet: BIRDS-I
The performance of CBIR algorithms is usually measured on an isolated
workstation. In a real-world environment the algorithms would only constitute a
minor component among the many interacting components. The Internet
dramati-cally changes many of the usual assumptions about measuring CBIR
performance. Any CBIR benchmark should be designed from a networked systems
standpoint. These benchmarks typically introduce communication overhead because
the real systems they model are distributed applications. We present our
implementation of a client/server benchmark called BIRDS-I to measure image
retrieval performance over the Internet. It has been designed with the trend
toward the use of small personalized wireless systems in mind. Web-based CBIR
implies the use of heteroge-neous image sets, imposing certain constraints on
how the images are organized and the type of performance metrics applicable.
BIRDS-I only requires controlled human intervention for the compilation of the
image collection and none for the generation of ground truth in the measurement
of retrieval accuracy. Benchmark image collections need to be evolved
incrementally toward the storage of millions of images and that scaleup can
only be achieved through the use of computer-aided compilation. Finally, our

Extending the 5S Framework of Digital Libraries to support Complex Objects, Superimposed Information, and Content-Based Image Retrieval Services
Advanced services in digital libraries (DLs) have been developed and widely used to address the required capabilities of an assortment of systems as DLs expand into diverse application domains. These systems may require support for images (e.g., Content-Based Image Retrieval), Complex (information) Objects, and use of content at fine grain (e.g., Superimposed Information). Due to the lack of consensus on precise theoretical definitions for those services, implementation efforts often involve ad hoc development, leading to duplication and interoperability problems. This article presents a methodology to address those problems by extending a precisely specified minimal digital library (in the 5S framework) with formal definitions of aforementioned services. The theoretical extensions of digital library functionality presented here are reinforced with practical case studies as well as scenarios for the individual and integrative use of services to balance theory and practice. This methodology has implications that other advanced
services can be continuously integrated into our current extended framework whenever they are identified. The theoretical definitions and case study we present may impact future development efforts and a wide range of digital library researchers, designers, and developers

The Second CHORUS Conference and third Yahoo! Research Workshop on the Future of Web Search was held during April 4-5, 2008, in Granvalira, Andorra to discuss future directions in multi-medial information access and other specialised topics in the near future of retrieval. Attendance was at capacity, with 97 participants from 11 countries and 3 continents
reSearch : enhancing information retrieval with images
Combining image and text search is an open research question. The main issues are what technologies to base this solution on, and what measures of relevance to employ. Our reSearch prototype mashes up papers indexed using information retrieval techniques (Terrier) with Google image search for faces and Google book search. The user can interactively employ query expansion with additional terms suggested by Terrier, and use those terms to expand both the text and image search. We test this solution with a selection of recent publications and queries concerning people engaged in research. We report on the effectiveness of this solution. It seems that the combination works to a large extent, as testified by our observations

MusA: Using Indoor Positioning and Navigation to Enhance Cultural Experiences in a museum
In recent years there has been a growing interest into the use of multimedia mobile guides in museum environments. Mobile devices have the capabilities to detect the user context and to provide pieces of information suitable to help visitors discovering and following the logical and emotional connections that develop during the visit. In this scenario, location based services (LBS) currently represent an asset, and the choice of the technology to determine users' position, combined with the definition of methods that can effectively convey information, become key issues in the design process. In this work, we present MusA (Museum Assistant), a general framework for the development of multimedia interactive guides for mobile devices. Its main feature is a vision-based indoor positioning system that allows the provision of several LBS, from way-finding to the contextualized communication of cultural contents, aimed at providing a meaningful exploration of exhibits according to visitors' personal interest and curiosity. Starting from the thorough description of the system architecture, the article presents the implementation of two mobile guides, developed to respectively address adults and children, and discusses the evaluation of the user experience and the visitors' appreciation of these application
