    Timing in Technischen Sicherheitsanforderungen fĂŒr SystementwĂŒrfe mit heterogenen KritikalitĂ€tsanforderungen

    Traditionally, timing requirements as (technical) safety requirements have been avoided through clever functional designs. New vehicle automation concepts and other applications, however, make this harder or even impossible and challenge design automation for cyber-physical systems to provide a solution. This thesis takes upon this challenge by introducing cross-layer dependency analysis to relate timing dependencies in the bounded execution time (BET) model to the functional model of the artifact. In doing so, the analysis is able to reveal where timing dependencies may violate freedom from interference requirements on the functional layer and other intermediate model layers. For design automation this leaves the challenge how such dependencies are avoided or at least be bounded such that the design is feasible: The results are synthesis strategies for implementation requirements and a system-level placement strategy for run-time measures to avoid potentially catastrophic consequences of timing dependencies which are not eliminated from the design. Their applicability is shown in experiments and case studies. However, all the proposed run-time measures as well as very strict implementation requirements become ever more expensive in terms of design effort for contemporary embedded systems, due to the system's complexity. Hence, the second part of this thesis reflects on the design aspect rather than the analysis aspect of embedded systems and proposes a timing predictable design paradigm based on System-Level Logical Execution Time (SL-LET). Leveraging a timing-design model in SL-LET the proposed methods from the first part can now be applied to improve the quality of a design -- timing error handling can now be separated from the run-time methods and from the implementation requirements intended to guarantee them. The thesis therefore introduces timing diversity as a timing-predictable execution theme that handles timing errors without having to deal with them in the implemented application. An automotive 3D-perception case study demonstrates the applicability of timing diversity to ensure predictable end-to-end timing while masking certain types of timing errors.Traditionell wurden Timing-Anforderungen als (technische) Sicherheitsanforderungen durch geschickte funktionale EntwĂŒrfe vermieden. Neue Fahrzeugautomatisierungskonzepte und Anwendungen machen dies jedoch schwieriger oder gar unmöglich; Aufgrund der ProblemkomplexitĂ€t erfordert dies eine Entwurfsautomatisierung fĂŒr cyber-physische Systeme heraus. Diese Arbeit nimmt sich dieser Herausforderung an, indem sie eine schichtenĂŒbergreifende AbhĂ€ngigkeitsanalyse einfĂŒhrt, um zeitliche AbhĂ€ngigkeiten im Modell der beschrĂ€nkten AusfĂŒhrungszeit (BET) mit dem funktionalen Modell des Artefakts in Beziehung zu setzen. Auf diese Weise ist die Analyse in der Lage, aufzuzeigen, wo Timing-AbhĂ€ngigkeiten die Anforderungen an die Störungsfreiheit auf der funktionalen Schicht und anderen dazwischenliegenden Modellschichten verletzen können. FĂŒr die Entwurfsautomatisierung ergibt sich daraus die Herausforderung, wie solche AbhĂ€ngigkeiten vermieden oder zumindest so eingegrenzt werden können, dass der Entwurf machbar ist: Das Ergebnis sind Synthesestrategien fĂŒr Implementierungsanforderungen und eine Platzierungsstrategie auf Systemebene fĂŒr Laufzeitmaßnahmen zur Vermeidung potentiell katastrophaler Folgen von Timing-AbhĂ€ngigkeiten, die nicht aus dem Entwurf eliminiert werden. Ihre Anwendbarkeit wird in Experimenten und Fallstudien gezeigt. Allerdings werden alle vorgeschlagenen Laufzeitmaßnahmen sowie sehr strenge Implementierungsanforderungen fĂŒr moderne eingebettete Systeme aufgrund der KomplexitĂ€t des Systems immer teurer im Entwurfsaufwand. Daher befasst sich der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit eher mit dem Entwurfsaspekt als mit dem Analyseaspekt von eingebetteten Systemen und schlĂ€gt ein Entwurfsparadigma fĂŒr vorhersagbares Timing vor, das auf der System-Level Logical Execution Time (SL-LET) basiert. Basierend auf einem Timing-Entwurfsmodell in SL-LET können die vorgeschlagenen Methoden aus dem ersten Teil nun angewandt werden, um die QualitĂ€t eines Entwurfs zu verbessern -- die Behandlung von Timing-Fehlern kann nun von den Laufzeitmethoden und von den Implementierungsanforderungen, die diese garantieren sollen, getrennt werden. In dieser Arbeit wird daher Timing Diversity als ein Thema der Timing-Vorhersage in der AusfĂŒhrung eingefĂŒhrt, das Timing-Fehler behandelt, ohne dass sie in der implementierten Anwendung behandelt werden mĂŒssen. Anhand einer Fallstudie aus dem Automobilbereich (3D-Umfeldwahrnehmung) wird die Anwendbarkeit von Timing-DiversitĂ€t demonstriert, um ein vorhersagbares Ende-zu-Ende-Timing zu gewĂ€hrleisten und gleichzeitig in der Lage zu sein, bestimmte Arten von Timing-Fehlern zu maskieren

    Communication Centric Design in Complex Automotive Embedded Systems

    Automotive embedded applications like the engine management system are composed of multiple functional components that are tightly coupled via numerous communication dependencies and intensive data sharing, while also having real-time requirements. In order to cope with complexity, especially in multi-core settings, various communication mechanisms are used to ensure data consistency and temporal determinism along functional cause-effect chains. However, existing timing analysis methods generally only support very basic communication models that need to be extended to handle the analysis of industry grade problems which involve more complex communication semantics. In this work, we give an overview of communication semantics used in the automotive industry and the different constraints to be considered in the design process. We also propose a method for model transformation to increase the expressiveness of current timing analysis methods enabling them to work with more complex communication semantics. We demonstrate this transformation approach for concrete implementations of two communication semantics, namely, implicit and LET communication. We discuss the impact on end-to-end latencies and communication overheads based on a full blown engine management system

    Latency analysis for data chains of real-time periodic tasks

    International audienceA data chain is a sequence of periodic real-time communicating tasks that are processing the data from sensors up to actuators. It determines an order in which the tasks propagate data but not in which they are executed: inter-task communication and scheduling are independent. In this paper, we focus on the latency computation, considered as the time elapsed from getting the data from an input and processing it to an output of a data chain. We propose a method for the worst-case latency calculation of periodic tasks’ data chains executed by a partitioned fixed-priority preemptive scheduler upon a multiprocessor platform. As far as we know, there is no such formal approach based on closed-form expression for communicating real-time tasks

    Latency upper bound for data chains of real-time periodic tasks

    International audienceThe inter-task communication in embedded real-time systems can be achieved using various patterns and be subject to different timing constraints. One of the most basic communication patterns encountered in today's automotive and aerospace software is the data chain. Each task of the chain reads data from the previous task and delivers the results of its computation to the next task. The data passing does not affect the execution of the tasks that are activated periodically at their own rates. As there is no task synchronization, a task does not wait for its predecessor data; it may execute with old data and get new data at its later release. From the design stage of embedded real-time systems, evaluating if data chains meet their timing requirements, such as the latency constraint, is of the highest importance. The trade-off between accuracy and complexity of the timing analysis is a critical element in the optimization process. In this paper, we consider data chains of real-time periodic tasks executed by a fixed-priority preemptive scheduler upon a single processor. We present a method for the worst-case latency calculation of periodic tasks' data chains. As the method has an exponential time complexity, we derive a polynomial-time upper bound. Evaluations carried out on an automotive benchmark demonstrate that the average bound overestimation is less than 10 percent of the actual value

    An efficient FIFO buffer management to ensure task level and effect-chain level data properties

    International audienceReal-time embedded systems (automotive, avionics,drones autopilots, etc.) are composed of numerous functional components that are continuously interacting via a variety of communication models where they intensively share data. For the overall functional correctness these systems must verify not only real-time scheduling requirements but they also must guarantee that the data being used are qualitatively correct. The quality of the data reflects the preservation of data related properties: temporal properties (i.e freshness, end-to-end latency, etc.) and integrity related properties (i.e data consistency). The proposed protocols to ensure such properties highly depend on the considered communication model (shared registers or large buffers) and the data access policy (directly or via local copies). In order to overcome this limitation, we provide in this paper, the means for managing the FIFO buffers to guarantee these data properties in a way that communication dependencies do not impact the tasks system scheduling order. We do so while considering the communication model presented in [14]. We provide methods computing a sufficient size for the considered buffers. Last but not least, an algorithm implementing the "last reader tags mechanism" together with the data temporal matching is provided and explained

    Towards a centralized multicore automotive system

    Today’s automotive systems are inundated with embedded electronics to host chassis, powertrain, infotainment, advanced driver assistance systems, and other modern vehicle functions. As many as 100 embedded microcontrollers execute hundreds of millions of lines of code in a single vehicle. To control the increasing complexity in vehicle electronics and services, automakers are planning to consolidate different on-board automotive functions as software tasks on centralized multicore hardware platforms. However, these vehicle software services have different and contrasting timing, safety, and security requirements. Existing vehicle operating systems are ill-equipped to provide all the required service guarantees on a single machine. A centralized automotive system aims to tackle this by assigning software tasks to multiple criticality domains or levels according to their consequences of failures, or international safety standards like ISO 26262. This research investigates several emerging challenges in time-critical systems for a centralized multicore automotive platform and proposes a novel vehicle operating system framework to address them. This thesis first introduces an integrated vehicle management system (VMS), called DriveOSℱ, for a PC-class multicore hardware platform. Its separation kernel design enables temporal and spatial isolation among critical and non-critical vehicle services in different domains on the same machine. Time- and safety-critical vehicle functions are implemented in a sandboxed Real-time Operating System (OS) domain, and non-critical software is developed in a sandboxed general-purpose OS (e.g., Linux, Android) domain. To leverage the advantages of model-driven vehicle function development, DriveOS provides a multi-domain application framework in Simulink. This thesis also presents a real-time task pipeline scheduling algorithm in multiprocessors for communication between connected vehicle services with end-to-end guarantees. The benefits and performance of the overall automotive system framework are demonstrated with hardware-in-the-loop testing using real-world applications, car datasets and simulated benchmarks, and with an early-stage deployment in a production-grade luxury electric vehicle

    Modeling and Analysis of Automotive Cyber-physical Systems: Formal Approaches to Latency Analysis in Practice

    Based on advances in scheduling analysis in the 1970s, a whole area of research has evolved: formal end-to-end latency analysis in real-time systems. Although multiple approaches from the scientific community have successfully been applied in industrial practice, a gap is emerging between the means provided by formally backed approaches and the need of the automotive industry where cyber-physical systems have taken over from classic embedded systems. They are accompanied by a shift to heterogeneous platforms build upon multicore architectures. Scien- tific techniques are often still based on too simple system models and estimations on important end-to-end latencies have only been tightened recently. To this end, we present an expressive system model and formally describe the problem of end-to-end latency analysis in modern automotive cyber-physical systems. Based on this we examine approaches to formally estimate tight end-to-end latencies in Chapter 4 and Chapter 5. The de- veloped approaches include a wide range of relevant systems. We show that our approach for the estimation of latencies of task chains dominates existing approaches in terms of tightness of the results. In the last chapter we make a brief digression to measurement analysis since measuring and simulation is an important part of verification in current industrial practice
