    Interference suppression and parameter estimation in wireless communication systems over time-varing multipath fading channels

    This dissertation focuses on providing solutions to two of the most important problems in wireless communication systems design, namely, 1) the interference suppression, and 2) the channel parameter estimation in wireless communication systems over time-varying multipath fading channels. We first study the interference suppression problem in various communication systems under a unified multirate transmultiplexer model. A state-space approach that achieves the optimal realizable equalization (suppression of inter-symbol interference) is proposed, where the Kalman filter is applied to obtain the minimum mean squared error estimate of the transmitted symbols. The properties of the optimal realizable equalizer are analyzed. Its relations with the conventional equalization methods are studied. We show that, although in general a Kalman filter has an infinite impulse response, the Kalman filter based decision-feedback equalizer (Kalman DFE) is a finite length filter. We also propose a novel successive interference cancellation (SIC) scheme to suppress the inter-channel interference encountered in multi-input multi-output systems. Based on spatial filtering theory, the SIC scheme is again converted to a Kalman filtering problem. Combining the Kalman DFE and the SIC scheme in series, the resultant two-stage receiver achieves optimal realizable interference suppression. Our results are the most general ever obtained, and can be applied to any linear channels that have a state-space realization, including time-invariant, time-varying, finite impulse response, and infinite impulse response channels. The second half of the dissertation devotes to the parameter estimation and tracking of single-input single-output time-varying multipath channels. We propose a novel method that can blindly estimate the channel second order statistics (SOS). We establish the channel SOS identifiability condition and propose novel precoder structures that guarantee the blind estimation of the channel SOS and achieve diversities. The estimated channel SOS can then be fit into a low order autoregressive (AR) model characterizing the time evolution of the channel impulse response. Based on this AR model, a new approach to time-varying multipath channel tracking is proposed

    An adaptive correlator receiver for combined suppression of co-channel interference and narrow-band jammers in a slowly fading channel

    This work deals with the adaptive correlation of a direct sequence spread spectrum signal in the presence of narrow-band, multipath and multiple user interference. The Least Mean Square and Recursive Least Square algorithms are employed for the adaptive convergence of the correlator receiver to minimize the mean squared error. The performance of the adaptive correlator is compared with the matched filter correlator receiver and the conventional prediction filter for the suppression of narrow-band interference by calculating the bit error probability rate. The adaptive correlator is also compared with the RAKE receiver for multipath suppression and compared to the decorelating detector for the suppression of multiple user interference. It is shown that the adaptive correlator is capable of suppressing interference when the spread spectrum signal is corrupted by a combination of disturbances, such as narrow-band jammers and multipath or multiple users on the same channel

    Estimation of real traffic radiated emissions from electric vehicles in terms of the driving profile using neural networks

    The increment of the use of electric vehicles leads to a worry about measuring its principal source of environmental pollution: electromagnetic emissions. Given the complexity of directly measuring vehicular radiated emissions in real traffic, the main contribution of this PhD thesis is to propose an indirect solution to estimate such type of vehicular emissions. Relating the on-road vehicular radiated emissions with the driving profile is a complicated task. This is because it is not possible to directly measure the vehicular radiated interferences in real traffic due to potential interferences from another electromagnetic wave sources. This thesis presents a microscopic artificial intelligence model based on neural networks to estimate real traffic radiated emissions of electric vehicles in terms of the driving dynamics. Instantaneous values of measured speed and calculated acceleration have been used to characterize the driving profile. Experimental electromagnetic interference tests have been carried out with a Vectrix electric motorcycle as well as Twizy electric cars in semi-anechoic chambers. Both the motorcycle and the car have been subjected to different urban and interurban driving profiles. Time Domain measurement methodology of electromagnetic radiated emissions has been adopted in this work to save the overall measurement time. The relationship between the magnetic radiated emissions of the Twizy and the corresponding speed has been very noticeable. Maximum magnetic field levels have been observed during high speed cruising in extra-urban driving and acceleration in urban environments. A comparative study of the prediction performance between various static and dynamic neural models has been introduced. The Multilayer Perceptron feedforward neural network trained with Extreme Learning Machines has achieved the best estimation results of magnetic radiated disturbances as function of instantaneous speed and acceleration. In this way, on-road magnetic radiated interferences from an electric vehicle equipped with a Global Positioning System can be estimated. This research line will allow quantify the pollutant electromagnetic emissions of electric vehicles and study new policies to preserve the environment

    Doppler radar-based non-contact health monitoring for obstructive sleep apnea diagnosis: A comprehensive review

    Today’s rapid growth of elderly populations and aging problems coupled with the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and other health related issues have affected many aspects of society. This has led to high demands for a more robust healthcare monitoring, diagnosing and treatments facilities. In particular to Sleep Medicine, sleep has a key role to play in both physical and mental health. The quality and duration of sleep have a direct and significant impact on people’s learning, memory, metabolism, weight, safety, mood, cardio-vascular health, diseases, and immune system function. The gold-standard for OSA diagnosis is the overnight sleep monitoring system using polysomnography (PSG). However, despite the quality and reliability of the PSG system, it is not well suited for long-term continuous usage due to limited mobility as well as causing possible irritation, distress, and discomfort to patients during the monitoring process. These limitations have led to stronger demands for non-contact sleep monitoring systems. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the current state of non-contact Doppler radar sleep monitoring technology and provide an outline of current challenges and make recommendations on future research directions to practically realize and commercialize the technology for everyday usage

    Nonlinear Adaptive Signal Processing Improves the Diagnostic Quality of Transabdominal Fetal Electrocardiography

    The abdominal fetal electrocardiogram (fECG) conveys valuable information that can aid clinicians with the diagnosis and monitoring of a potentially at risk fetus during pregnancy and in childbirth. This chapter primarily focuses on noninvasive (external and indirect) transabdominal fECG monitoring. Even though it is the preferred monitoring method, unlike its classical invasive (internal and direct) counterpart (transvaginal monitoring), it may be contaminated by a variety of undesirable signals that deteriorate its quality and reduce its value in reliable detection of hypoxic conditions in the fetus. A stronger maternal electrocardiogram (the mECG signal) along with technical and biological artifacts constitutes the main interfering signal components that diminish the diagnostic quality of the transabdominal fECG recordings. Currently, transabdominal fECG monitoring relies solely on the determination of the fetus’ pulse or heart rate (FHR) by detecting RR intervals and does not take into account the morphology and duration of the fECG waves (P, QRS, T), intervals, and segments, which collectively convey very useful diagnostic information in adult cardiology. The main reason for the exclusion of these valuable pieces of information in the determination of the fetus’ status from clinical practice is the fact that there are no sufficiently reliable and well-proven techniques for accurate extraction of fECG signals and robust derivation of these informative features. To address this shortcoming in fetal cardiology, we focus on adaptive signal processing methods and pay particular attention to nonlinear approaches that carry great promise in improving the quality of transabdominal fECG monitoring and consequently impacting fetal cardiology in clinical practice. Our investigation and experimental results by using clinical-quality synthetic data generated by our novel fECG signal generator suggest that adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems could produce a significant advancement in fetal monitoring during pregnancy and childbirth. The possibility of using a single device to leverage two advanced methods of fetal monitoring, namely noninvasive cardiotocography (CTG) and ST segment analysis (STAN) simultaneously, to detect fetal hypoxic conditions is very promising
