    System Description for a Scalable, Fault-Tolerant, Distributed Garbage Collector

    We describe an efficient and fault-tolerant algorithm for distributed cyclic garbage collection. The algorithm imposes few requirements on the local machines and allows for flexibility in the choice of local collector and distributed acyclic garbage collector to use with it. We have emphasized reducing the number and size of network messages without sacrificing the promptness of collection throughout the algorithm. Our proposed collector is a variant of back tracing to avoid extensive synchronization between machines. We have added an explicit forward tracing stage to the standard back tracing stage and designed a tuned heuristic to reduce the total amount of work done by the collector. Of particular note is the development of fault-tolerant cooperation between traces and a heuristic that aggressively reduces the set of suspect objects.Comment: 47 pages, LaTe

    Yellow Tree: A Distributed Main-memory Spatial Index Structure for Moving Objects

    Mobile devices equipped with wireless technologies to communicate and positioning systems to locate objects of interest are common place today, providing the impetus to develop location-aware applications. At the heart of location-aware applications are moving objects or objects that continuously change location over time, such as cars in transportation networks or pedestrians or postal packages. Location-aware applications tend to support the tracking of very large numbers of such moving objects as well as many users that are interested in finding out about the locations of other moving objects. Such location-aware applications rely on support from database management systems to model, store, and query moving object data. The management of moving object data exposes the limitations of traditional (spatial) database management systems as well as their index structures designed to keep track of objects\u27 locations. Spatial index structures that have been designed for geographic objects in the past primarily assume data are foremost of static nature (e.g., land parcels, road networks, or airport locations), thus requiring a limited amount of index structure updates and reorganization over a period of time. While handling moving objects however, there is an incumbent need for continuous reorganization of spatial index structures to remain up to date with constantly and rapidly changing object locations. This research addresses some of the key issues surrounding the efficient database management of moving objects whose location update rate to the database system varies from 1 to 30 minutes. Furthermore, we address the design of a highly scaleable and efficient spatial index structure to support location tracking and querying of large amounts of moving objects. We explore the possible architectural and the data structure level changes that are required to handle large numbers of moving objects. We focus specifically on the index structures that are needed to process spatial range queries and object-based queries on constantly changing moving object data. We argue for the case of main memory spatial index structures that dynamically adapt to continuously changing moving object data and concurrently answer spatial range queries efficiently. A proof-of concept implementation called the yellow tree, which is a distributed main-memory index structure, and a simulated environment to generate moving objects is demonstrated. Using experiments conducted on simulated moving object data, we conclude that a distributed main-memory based spatial index structure is required to handle dynamic location updates and efficiently answer spatial range queries on moving objects.     Swiftmend: Data Synchronization in Open mHealth Applications with Restricted Connectivity

    Open mHealth applications often include mobile devices and cloud services with replicated data between components. These replicas need periodical synchronization to remain consistent. However, there are no guarantee of connectivity to networks which do not bill users on the quantity of data usage. This thesis propose Swiftmend, a system with synchronization that minimize the quantity of I/O used on the network. Swiftmend includes two reconciliation algorithms; Rejuvenation and Regrowth. The latter utilizes the efficiency of the Merkle tree data structure to reduce the I/O. Merkle trees can sum up the consistency of replicas into compact fingerprints. While the first reconciliation algorithm, Rejuvenation simply inspects the entire replica to identify consistency. Regrowth is shown to produce less quantity of I/O than Rejuvenation when synchronizing replicas. This is due to the compact fingerprints

    A Uniform Approach to Programming the World Wide Web

    We propose a uniform model for programming distributed Web applications. The model is based on the concept of Web computation places and provides mechanisms to coordinate distributed computations at these places, including peer-to-peer communication between places and a uniform mechanism to initiate computation in remote places. Computations can interact with the flow of HTTP requests and responses, typically as clients, proxies or servers in the Web architecture. We have implemented the model using the global pointers and remote service requests provided by the Nexus communication library.     Models of higher-order, type-safe, distributed computation over autonomous persistent object stores

    A remote procedure call (RPC) mechanism permits the calling of procedures in another address space. RPC is a simple but highly effective mechanism for interprocess communication and enjoys nowadays a great popularity as a tool for building distributed applications. This popularity is partly a result of their overall simplicity but also partly a consequence of more than 20 years of research in transpaxent distribution that have failed to deliver systems that meet the expectations of real-world application programmers. During the same 20 years, persistent systems have proved their suitability for building complex database applications by seamlessly integrating features traditionally found in database management systems into the programming language itself. Some research. effort has been invested on distributed persistent systems, but the outcomes commonly suffer from the same problems found with transparent distribution. In this thesis I claim that a higher-order persistent RPC is useful for building distributed persistent applications. The proposed mechanism is: realistic in the sense that it uses current technology and tolerates partial failures; understandable by application programmers; and general to support the development of many classes of distributed persistent applications. In order to demonstrate the validity of these claims, I propose and have implemented three models for distributed higher-order computation over autonomous persistent stores. Each model has successively exposed new problems which have then been overcome by the next model. Together, the three models provide a general yet simple higher-order persistent RPC that is able to operate in realistic environments with partial failures. The real strength of this thesis is the demonstration of realism and simplicity. A higherorder persistent RPC was not only implemented but also used by programmers without experience of programming distributed applications. Furthermore, a distributed persistent application has been built using these models which would not have been feasible with a traditional (non-persistent) programming language

    Hierarchical distributed fog-to-cloud data management in smart cities

    There is a vast amount of data being generated every day in the world with different formats, quality levels, etc. This new data, together with the archived historical data, constitute the seed for future knowledge discovery and value generation in several fields of science and big data environments. Discovering value from data is a complex computing process where data is the key resource, not only during its processing, but also during its entire life cycle. However, there is still a huge concern about how to organize and manage this data in all fields for efficient usage and exploitation during all data life cycles. Although several specific Data LifeCycle (DLC) models have been recently defined for particular scenarios, we argue that there is no global and comprehensive DLC framework to be widely used in different fields. In particular scenario, smart cities are the current technological solutions to handle the challenges and complexity of the growing urban density. Traditionally, Smart City resources management rely on cloud based solutions where sensors data are collected to provide a centralized and rich set of open data. The advantages of cloud-based frameworks are their ubiquity, as well as an (almost) unlimited resources capacity. However, accessing data from the cloud implies large network traffic, high latencies usually not appropriate for real-time or critical solutions, as well as higher security risks. Alternatively, fog computing emerges as a promising technology to absorb these inconveniences. It proposes the use of devices at the edge to provide closer computing facilities and, therefore, reducing network traffic, reducing latencies drastically while improving security. We have defined a new framework for data management in the context of a Smart City through a global fog to cloud resources management architecture. This model has the advantages of both, fog and cloud technologies, as it allows reduced latencies for critical applications while being able to use the high computing capabilities of cloud technology. In this thesis, we propose many novel ideas in the design of a novel F2C Data Management architecture for smart cities as following. First, we draw and describe a comprehensive scenario agnostic Data LifeCycle model successfully addressing all challenges included in the 6Vs not tailored to any specific environment, but easy to be adapted to fit the requirements of any particular field. Then, we introduce the Smart City Comprehensive Data LifeCycle model, a data management architecture generated from a comprehensive scenario agnostic model, tailored for the particular scenario of Smart Cities. We define the management of each data life phase, and explain its implementation on a Smart City with Fog-to-Cloud (F2C) resources management. And then, we illustrate a novel architecture for data management in the context of a Smart City through a global fog to cloud resources management architecture. We show this model has the advantages of both, fog and cloud, as it allows reduced latencies for critical applications while being able to use the high computing capabilities of cloud technology. As a first experiment for the F2C data management architecture, a real Smart City is analyzed, corresponding to the city of Barcelona, with special emphasis on the layers responsible for collecting the data generated by the deployed sensors. The amount of daily sensors data transmitted through the network has been estimated and a rough projection has been made assuming an exhaustive deployment that fully covers all city. And, we provide some solutions to both reduce the data transmission and improve the data management. Then, we used some data filtering techniques (including data aggregation and data compression) to estimate the network traffic in this model during data collection and compare it with a traditional real system.     A selective dynamic compiler for embedded Java virtual machine targeting ARM processors

    Tableau d’honneur de la Faculté des études supérieures et postdoctorales, 2004-2005Ce travail présente une nouvelle technique de compilation dynamique sélective pour les systèmes embarqués avec processeurs ARM. Ce compilateur a été intégré dans la plateforme J2ME/CLDC (Java 2 Micro Edition for Connected Limited Device Con- figuration). L’objectif principal de notre travail est d’obtenir une machine virtuelle accélérée, légère et compacte prête pour l’exécution sur les systèmes embarqués. Cela est atteint par l’implémentation d’un compilateur dynamique sélectif pour l’architecture ARM dans la Kilo machine virtuelle de Sun (KVM). Ce compilateur est appelé Armed E-Bunny. Premièrement, on présente la plateforme Java, le Java 2 Micro Edition(J2ME) pour les systèmes embarqués et les composants de la machine virtuelle Java. Ensuite, on discute les différentes techniques d’accélération pour la machine virtuelle Java et on détaille le principe de la compilation dynamique. Enfin, on illustre l’architecture, le design (la conception), l’implémentation et les résultats expérimentaux de notre compilateur dynamique sélective Armed E-Bunny. La version modifiée de KVM a été portée sur un ordinateur de poche (PDA) et a été testée en utilisant un benchmark standard de J2ME. Les résultats expérimentaux de la performance montrent une accélération de 360 % par rapport à la dernière version de la KVM de Sun avec un espace mémoire additionnel qui n’excède pas 119 kilobytes.This work presents a new selective dynamic compilation technique targeting ARM 16/32-bit embedded system processors. This compiler is built inside the J2ME/CLDC (Java 2 Micro Edition for Connected Limited Device Configuration) platform. The primary objective of our work is to come up with an efficient, lightweight and low-footprint accelerated Java virtual machine ready to be executed on embedded machines. This is achieved by implementing a selective ARM dynamic compiler called Armed E-Bunny into Sun’s Kilobyte Virtual Machine (KVM). We first present the Java platform, Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) for embedded systems and Java virtual machine components. Then, we discuss the different acceleration techniques for Java virtual machine and we detail the principle of dynamic compilation. After that we illustrate the architecture, design, implementation and experimental results of our selective dynamic compiler Armed E-Bunny. The modified KVM is ported on a handheld PDA and is tested using standard J2ME benchmarks. The experimental results on its performance demonstrate that a speedup of 360% over the last version of Sun’s KVM is accomplished with a footprint overhead that does not exceed 119 kilobytes

    3D Visualization Architecture for Building Applications Leveraging an Existing Validated Toolkit

    The diagnostic radiology space and healthcare in general is a slow adopter of new software technologies and patterns. Despite the widespread embrace of mobile technology in recent years, altering the manner in which societies in developed countries live and communicate, diagnostic radiology has not unanimously adopted mobile technology for remote diagnostic review. Desktop applications in the diagnostic radiology space commonly leverage a validated toolkit. Such toolkits not only simplify desktop application development but minimize the scope of application validation. For these reasons, such a toolkit is an important piece of a company’s software portfolio. This thesis investigated an approach for leveraging a Java validated toolkit for the purpose of creating numerous ubiquitous applications for 3D diagnostic radiology. Just as in the desktop application space, leveraging such a toolkit minimizes the scope of ubiquitous application validation. Today, the most standard execution environment in an electronic device is an Internet browser; therefore, a ubiquitous application is web application. This thesis examines an approach where ubiquitous applications can be built using a viewport construct provided by a client-side ubiquitous toolkit that hides the client-server communication between the ubiquitous toolkit and the validated visualization toolkit. Supporting this communication is a Java RESTful web service wrapper around the validated visualization toolkit that essentially “webifies” the validated toolkit. Overall, this ubiquitous viewport is easily included in a ubiquitous application and supports remote visualization and manipulation of volumes on the widest range of electronic devices. Overall, this thesis provided a flexible and scalable approach to developing ubiquitous applications that leverage an existing validated toolkit that utilizes industry standard technologies, patterns, and best practices. This approach is significant because it supports easy ubiquitous application development and minimizes the scope of application validation, and allows medical professionals easy anytime and anywhere access to diagnostic images
