    Sustainable technologies for older adults

    : The exponential evolution of technology and the growth of the elderly population are two phenomena that will inevitably interact with increasing frequency in the future. This paper analyses scientific literature as a means of furthering progress in sustainable technology for senior living. We carried out a bibliometric analysis of papers published in this area and compiled by the Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus, examining the main participants and advances in the field from 2000 to the first quarter of 2021. The study describes some interesting research projects addressing three different aspects of older adults’ daily lives—health, daily activities and wellbeing—and policies to promote healthy aging and improve the sustainability of the healthcare system. It also looks at lines of research into transversal characteristics of technology. Our analysis showed that publications mentioning sustainability technologies for older adults have been growing progressively since the 2000s, but that the big increase in the number of research works in this area took place during the period 2016–2021. These more recent works show a tendency to study those factors that improve healthy aging, ensure the social inclusion of the elderly through technology and prolong the time in which they can live independent lives thanks to smart environments.     The coming years will see an exponential increase in the proportion of elderly people in our society. This accelerated growth brings with it major challenges in relation to the sustainability of the system. There are different aspects where these changes will have a special incidence: health systems and their monitoring; the development of a framework in which the elderly can develop their daily lives satisfactorily; and in the design of intelligent cities adapted to the future sociodemographic profile. The discussion of the challenges faced, together with the current technological evolution, can show possible ways of meeting the challenges. From a systematic review of the literature to the development of gamification and health improvement projects. The articles present suggestive proposals for the improvement of the lives of the elderly. The volume is a resource of interest for the scientific community, since it shows different research gaps in the current state of the art. But it is also a document that can help social policy makers and people working in this domain to planning successful projects

    Senior Cohousing: The Social Architecture of Cohousing, Community Design & Well Being

    The world is facing a situation without precedent, due to the anticipated growth in and increasing longevity of elderly people. Where and how people live is and can be a determinant of health. There is substantial research on inadequate housing for older people and its adverse effects on health. However, less is known about how senior cohousing affects the health of its residents. Further research is needed to improve strategies for senior living environments that promote social interaction and facilitate well-being. This study aims to bolster design and policy strategies by investigating how senior cohousing residents perceive how their living situation affects their well-being. The theoretical underpinning for this study brings together the aging theories together with Rowe and Kahn’s (Rowe & Kahn 1997, 2015) and Baltes’ (Baltes & Baltes, 1990), theories on successful aging and well-being. These approaches expand on the Person (PE)-Environment dynamic interchange while adding Socialization (S) into the models’ framework the complex blending of physiological, behavioral, and social interaction that occur at scales of the individual, built environment, and community. This research investigates how environmental design and improved social networks result in measurable improvements in quality of life (QOL), life satisfaction (LS), and well-being (WB). The study sought to evaluate the determinants across multiple SR (self-reported) measures of health. The survey results show that increased are statistically significant for QOL, LS, and WB. Senior cohousing residents are a select group of individuals who seek a more meaningful and socially connected life. They enjoy independence, autonomy, and a healthier, active aging process. The research shows that high-quality social interaction and sustainable and environmentally sensitive architectural design, through the concept of Socially Enriched Environments (SEE) and Nature Rich Environments (NRE), promote a positive sense of well-being, and self-rated health (SRH). Senior cohousing is a necessary consideration for policy initiatives in the United States, given current health care cost trajectories for the aged which are unsustainable. If undertaken, this typology can potentially relieve some of the associated costs of providing health care. It has the clear potential to help relieve social isolation and lack of social support. However, currently, the domestic senior cohousing cohort is a highly selective group with substantial life resources (education, income, assets, and resilience) that puts them well outside normal population distributions in the U.S. Meanwhile, senior cohousing has and is becoming a well-established typology. Meanwhile, senior cohousing has and is becoming a well-established typology in Denmark, Sweden, and, more recently, the United Kingdom. The establishment of these European communities relies on policy initiatives and organizational and financial assistance which make it a viable option. In the U.S., the provision of policy assistance in the formation of senior cohousing communities can reduce the amount of lead time necessary to develop these communities and the high costs of initial development while potentially increasing the number of seniors who could live in them

    A systematic review on implementation of person-centered care interventions for older people in out-of-hospital settings

    The purpose: of this study was to explore the content and essential components of implemented person-centered care in the out-of-hospital context for older people (65+). Method: A systematic review was conducted, searching for published research in electronic databases: PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, PsycInfo, Web of Science and Embase between 2017 and 2019. Original studies with both qualitative and quantitative methods were included and assessed according to the quality assessment tools EPHPP and CASP. The review was limited to studies published in English, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Spanish. Results: In total, 63 original articles were included from 1772 hits. The results of the final synthesis revealed the following four interrelated themes, which are crucial for implementing person-centered care: (1) Knowing and confirming the patient as a whole person; (2) Co-creating a tailored personal health plan; (3) Inter-professional teamwork and collaboration with and for the older person and his/her relatives; and (4) Building a person-centered foundation. Conclusion: Approaching an interpersonal and inter-professional teamwork and consultation with focus on preventive and health promoting actions is a crucial prerequisite to co-create optimal health care practice with and for older people and their relatives in their unique context

    Matjarr Djuyal ‘hand talk’ : how using gestures in teaching the revitalised Gathang language helps preschoolers learn an Aboriginal language

    This research seeks to expand current knowledge on language revitalisation and the effectiveness of gesturing as a teaching strategy for young children learning the Gathang language. Gathang is a revitalised language of the Birrbay, Warrimay and Guringay peoples located on the Mid North Coast, New South Wales, Australia. The thesis weaves together strands or threads that represent Aboriginal knowing, being and doing, influencing Aboriginal language revitalisation and research. Using gestures (known as 'hand talk') with children and undertaking in-class experiments, the research aims to combine Western-focused theory regarding linguistics and Aboriginal cultural ways relating to storytelling and cultural knowledge. Two experimental studies measured the effectiveness of gesture, by employing a context in which other variables (e.g., other teaching pedagogies) could be held constant. In Experiment 1 the results showed a statistically significant effect of gesture on children's learning of Gathang nouns. Preschoolers displayed greater receptive knowledge of Gathang words learned with gesture than without, in the retention testing though not in the acquisition testing. In the retention testing, the effect on expressive knowledge also approached but did not reach statistical significance. Experiment 2, however, showed no significant effects of gesture on learning nouns+suffixes, in either receptive or expressive knowledge, at Post-test 1 and at Post-test 2. Alongside experimental investigation, this thesis investigated the perspectives of the children's regular preschool educators on the use of gesture that they had seen in the experiments. In summary, the findings of this thesis contribute to a growing body of research attesting to the effectiveness of gesture for improving language acquisition amongst learners. The findings provide the first detailed picture of how gesture can be effective in an Aboriginal language revitalisation context, both for the learning of preschool children in classroom settings, and as a way of involving their mainstream educators. This evidence should embolden language practitioners and linguists to include gesture in the design of language revitalisation programs since gesture also aligns with traditional Aboriginal teaching practices and offers a relatively low-cost strategy for helping teachers assist their students in acquiring Aboriginal languages
