    Reducing Library Characterization Time for Cell-aware Test while Maintaining Test Quality

    Cell-aware test (CAT) explicitly targets faults caused by defects inside library cells to improve test quality, compared with conventional automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) approaches, which target faults only at the boundaries of library cells. The CAT methodology consists of two stages. Stage 1, based on dedicated analog simulation, library characterization per cell identifies which cell-level test pattern detects which cell-internal defect; this detection information is encoded in a defect detection matrix (DDM). In Stage 2, with the DDMs as inputs, cell-aware ATPG generates chip-level test patterns per circuit design that is build up of interconnected instances of library cells. This paper focuses on Stage 1, library characterization, as both test quality and cost are determined by the set of cell-internal defects identified and simulated in the CAT tool flow. With the aim to achieve the best test quality, we first propose an approach to identify a comprehensive set, referred to as full set, of potential open- and short-defect locations based on cell layout. However, the full set of defects can be large even for a single cell, making the time cost of the defect simulation in Stage 1 unaffordable. Subsequently, to reduce the simulation time, we collapse the full set to a compact set of defects which serves as input of the defect simulation. The full set is stored for the diagnosis and failure analysis. With inspecting the simulation results, we propose a method to verify the test quality based on the compact set of defects and, if necessary, to compensate the test quality to the same level as that based on the full set of defects. For 351 combinational library cells in Cadence’s GPDK045 45nm library, we simulate only 5.4% defects from the full set to achieve the same test quality based on the full set of defects. In total, the simulation time, via linear extrapolation per cell, would be reduced by 96.4% compared with the time based on the full set of defects

    Assessing the effectiveness of different test approaches for power devices in a PCB

    Power electronic systems employing Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are broadly used in many applications, including some safety-critical ones. Several standards (e.g., ISO26262 for the automotive sector and DO-178 for avionics) mandate the adoption of effective test procedures for all electronic systems. However, the metrics to be used to compute the effectiveness of the adopted test procedures are not so clearly defined for power devices and systems. In the last years, some commercial fault simulation tools (e.g., DefectSim by Mentor Graphics and TestMAX by Synopsys) for analog circuits have been introduced, together with some new fault models. With these new tools, systematic analog fault simulation finally became practically feasible. The aim of this paper is twofold: first, we propose a method to extend the usage of the new analog fault models to power devices, thus allowing to compute a Fault Coverage figure for a given test. Secondly, we adopt the method on a case study, for which we quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of some test procedures commonly used at the PCB level for the detection of faults inside power devices. A typical Power Supply Unit (PSU) used in industrial products, including power transistors and power diodes, is considered. The analysis of the gathered results shows that using the new method we can identify the main points of strength / weakness of the different test solutions in a quantitative and deterministic manner, and pinpoint the faults escaping to each one

    Analysis and design of algorithm-based fault-tolerant systems

    An important consideration in the design of high performance multiprocessor systems is to ensure the correctness of the results computed in the presence of transient and intermittent failures. Concurrent error detection and correction have been applied to such systems in order to achieve reliability. Algorithm Based Fault Tolerance (ABFT) was suggested as a cost-effective concurrent error detection scheme. The research was motivated by the complexity involved in the analysis and design of ABFT systems. To that end, a matrix-based model was developed and, based on that, algorithms for both the design and analysis of ABFT systems are formulated. These algorithms are less complex than the existing ones. In order to reduce the complexity further, a hierarchical approach is developed for the analysis of large systems

    A proof-of-concept computer program called IGGLOSS (Interim Generalized Gate Logic Software Simulator) was developed and is discussed. The simulator engine was designed to perform stochastic estimation of self test coverage (fault-detection latency times) of digital computers or systems.     Power Line Monitoring through Data Integrity Analysis with Q-Learning Based Data Analysis Network

    To monitor and handle big data obtained from electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical, and other equipment linked to the power grid effectively and efficiently, it is important to monitor them continually to gather information on power line integrity. We propose that data transmission analysis and data collection from tools like digital power meters may be used to undertake predictive maintenance on power lines without the need for specialized hardware like power line modems and synthetic data streams. Neural network models such as deep learning may be used for power line integrity analysis systems effectively, safely, and reliably. We adopt Q-learning based data analysis network for analyzing and monitoring power line integrity. The results of experiments performed over 32 km long power line under different scenarios are presented. The proposed framework may be useful for monitoring traditional power lines as well as alternative energy source parks and large users like industries. We discovered that the quantity of data transferred changes based on the problem and the size of the planned data packet. When all phases were absent from all meters, we noted a significant decrease in the amount of data collected from the power line of interest. This implies that there is a power outage during the monitoring. When even one phase is reconnected, we only obtain a portion of the information and a solution to interpret this was necessary. Our Q-network was able to identify and classify simulated 190 entire power outages and 700 single phase outages. The mean square error (MSE) did not exceed 0.10% of the total number of instances, and the MSE of the smart meters for a complete disturbance was only 0.20%, resulting in an average number of conceivable cases of errors and disturbances of 0.12% for the whole operation.publishedVersio

Logo, a garantia da segurança física é um requisito que precisa ser observada por completo durante o processo de desenvolvimento. O padrão ISO 26262 provê medidas para garantir que esses requisitos não sejam negligenciados. Injeção de falhas é fortemente recomendada quando da verificação do funcionamento dos mecanismos de segurança implementados, assim como sua capacidade de cobertura associada ao diagnóstico de falhas existentes. A análise exaustiva não é obrigatória, mas evidências de que o máximo esforço foi feito para acurar a cobertura de diagnóstico precisam ser apresentadas, principalmente durante a avalição dos níveis de segurança associados a arquitetura implementada em hardware. Estes níveis dão suporte às alegações de que o projeto obedece às métricas de segurança da integridade física exigida em aplicações automotivas. Os níveis de integridade variam de A à D, sendo este último o mais rigoroso. Essa Tese explora o estado-da-arte em soluções de verificação, e tem por objetivo construir uma metodologia que permita acelerar a verificação da cobertura de diagnóstico alcançado. Diferentemente de outras técnicas voltadas à aceleração de injeção de falhas, a metodologia proposta utiliza uma plataforma de hardware dedicada à verificação, com o intuito de maximizar o desempenho relativo a simulação de falhas. Muitos aspectos relativos a ISO 26262 são observados de forma que a presente contribuição possa ser apreciada no segmento automotivo. Por fim, uma arquitetura OpenRISC é utilizada para confirmar os resultados alcançados com essa solução proposta pertencente ao estado-da-arte.Abstract : Modern vehicles are integrating a growing number of electronics to provide a safer experience for the driver. Therefore, safety is a non-negotiable requirement that must be considered through the vehicle development process. The ISO 26262 standard provides guidance to ensure that such requirements are implemented. Fault injection is highly recommended for the functional verification of safety mechanisms or to evaluate their diagnostic coverage capability. An exhaustive analysis is not required, but evidence of best effort through the diagnostic coverage assessment needs to be provided when performing quantitative evaluation of hardware architectural metrics. These metrics support that the automotive safety integrity level ? ranging from A (lowest) to D (strictest) levels ? was obeyed. This thesis explores the most advanced verification solutions in order to build a methodology to accelerate the diagnostic coverage assessment. Different from similar techniques for fault injection acceleration, the proposed methodology does not require any modification of the design model to enable acceleration. Many functional safety requisites in the ISO 26262 are considered thus allowing the contribution presented to be a suitable solution for the automotive segment.
