    Antipodal Vivaldi Antenna to Detect UHF Signals That Leaked Out of the Joint of a Transformer

    In recent years, extensive research has been conducted on the ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) method. Considering that acquiring a partial discharge UHF signal is the first step in a series of tasks, such as fault diagnosis and defect location, the UHF sensor plays an important role in the UHF method. An antipodal Vivaldi antenna installed at a transformer’s joint is designed in this study according to the structural features of 750 kV transformers in China. Several effective structures, such as linear gradient microstrip and slot edge, are employed to improve the return loss and radiation characteristics. A metal box is designed after analyzing the influence of the metal around the antenna. The metal box can effectively shield against electromagnetic interference and does not deteriorate the performance of the antenna significantly. Experimental data show that this antenna is much more sensitive than the rectangular plane spiral antenna. The proposed antipodal Vivaldi antenna is suitable for detecting partial discharge in large transformers

    Dir-MUSIC Algorithm for DOA Estimation of Partial Discharge Based on Signal Strength represented by Antenna Gain Array Manifold

    Inspection robots are widely used in the field of smart grid monitoring in substations, and partial discharge (PD) is an important sign of the insulation state of equipments. PD direction of arrival (DOA) algorithms using conventional beamforming and time difference of arrival (TDOA) require large-scale antenna arrays and high computational complexity, which make them difficult to implement on inspection robots. To address this problem, a novel directional multiple signal classification (Dir-MUSIC) algorithm for PD direction finding based on signal strength is proposed, and a miniaturized directional spiral antenna circular array is designed in this paper. First, the Dir-MUSIC algorithm is derived based on the array manifold characteristics. This method uses strength intensity information rather than the TDOA information, which could reduce the computational difficulty and the requirement of array size. Second, the effects of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and array manifold error on the performance of the algorithm are discussed through simulations in detail. Then according to the positioning requirements, the antenna array and its arrangement are developed, optimized, and simulation results suggested that the algorithm has reliable direction-finding performance in the form of 6 elements. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm is tested by using the designed spiral circular array in real scenarios. The experimental results show that the PD direction-finding error is 3.39{\deg}, which can meet the need for Partial discharge DOA estimation using inspection robots in substations.Comment: 8 pages,13 figures,24 reference

    Fault localization on power cables using time delay estimation of partial discharge signals

    Precise localization of partial discharge (PD) sources on power cables is vital to prevent power line failures that can lead to significant economic losses for electrical suppliers. This study proposes four methods to estimate the time delay of PD signals under electromagnetic interference, including white Gaussian noise (WGN) and discrete sinusoidal interference (DSI), using denoised PD signals with signal-to-noise ratios ranging from 10.6 to -7.02 dB. The maximum peak detection (MPD) and cross-correlation (CC) approaches, as well as two new techniques, interpolation cross-correlation (ICC) and envelope cross-correlation (ECC), are evaluated for their effectiveness in PD source localization. The researchers employ the time difference of arrival (TDoA) algorithm to compute PD location using the double-end PD location algorithm, where the PD location precision serves as an indicator of the accuracy of the time delay estimation methods. The study concludes that CC and ICC are the most suitable methods for estimating the time delay of PD signals in the PD location algorithm, as they exhibit the lowest error rates. These results suggest that CC and ICC can be used effectively for precise PD source localization under electromagnetic interference on power cables

    An Accurate and Efficient Time Delay Estimation Method of Ultra-High Frequency Signals for Partial Discharge Localization in Substations

    Partial discharge (PD) localization in substations based on the ultra-high frequency (UHF) method can be used to efficiently assess insulation conditions. Localization accuracy is affected by the accuracy of the time delay (TD) estimation, which is critical for PD localization in substations. A review of existing TD estimation methods indicates that there is a need to develop methods that are both accurate and computationally efficient. In this paper, a novel TD estimation method is proposed to improve both accuracy and efficiency. The TD is calculated using an improved cross-correlation algorithm based on full-wavefronts of array UHF signals, which are extracted using the minimum cumulative energy method and zero-crossing points searching methods. The cross-correlation algorithm effectively suppresses the TD error caused by differences between full-wavefronts. To verify the method, a simulated PD source test in a laboratory and a field test in a 220 kV substation were carried out. The results show that the proposed method is accurate even in case of low signal-to-noise ratio, but with greatly improved computational efficiency

    Wireless sensor system for infrastructure health monitoring

    In this thesis, radio frequency identification (RFID)-based wireless sensor system for infrastructure health monitoring (IHM) is designed and developed. It includes mountable semi-passive tag antenna integrated sensors capable of measuring critical responses of infrastructure such as dynamic acceleration and strain. Furthermore, the system is capable of measuring structural displacement. One of the most important parts of this system is the relatively small, tunable, construction material mountable RFID tag antenna. The tag antenna is electronically integrated with the sensors. Leading to the process of developing tag antenna integrated sensors having satisfactory wireless performance (sensitivity and read range) when mounted on concrete and metal structural members, the electromagnetic performance of the tag antenna is analyzed and optimized using both numerical and experimental procedures. Subsequently, it is shown that both the simulation and the experimental measurement results are in good agreement. The semi-passive RFID-based system is implemented in a wireless IHM system with multiple sensor points to measure dynamic acceleration and strain. The developed system can determine the natural frequencies of infrastructure and identify any state changes of infrastructure by measuring natural frequency shifts. Enhancement of the spectral bandwidth of the system has been performed under the constraints of the RFID hardware. The influence of the orientation and shape of the structural members on wireless power flow in the vicinity of those members is also investigated with the RFID reader-tag antenna system in both simulation and experiments. The antenna system simulations with a full-scale structural member have shown that both the orientation and the shape of the structural member influence the wireless power flow towards and in the vicinity of the member, respectively. The measurement results of the conducted laboratory experiments using the RFID antenna system in passive mode have shown good agreement with simulation results. Furthermore, the system’s ability to measure structural displacement is also investigated by conducting phase angle of arrival measurements. It is shown that the system in its passive mode is capable of measuring small structural displacements within a short wireless distance. The benchmarking of the developed system with independent, commercial, wired and wireless measurement systems has confirmed the ability of the RFID-based system to measure dynamic acceleration and strain. Furthermore, it has confirmed the system’s ability to determine the natural frequency of an infrastructure accurately. Therefore, the developed system with wireless sensors that do not consume battery power in data transmission and with the capability of dynamic response measurement is highly applicable in IHM

    Application of image sensors to detect and locate electrical discharges: a review

    Today, there are many attempts to introduce the Internet of Things (IoT) in high-voltage systems, where partial discharges are a focus of concern since they degrade the insulation. The idea is to detect such discharges at a very early stage so that corrective actions can be taken before major damage is produced. Electronic image sensors are traditionally based on charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and, next, on complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices. This paper performs a review and analysis of state-of-the-art image sensors for detecting, locating, and quantifying partial discharges in insulation systems and, in particular, corona discharges since it is an area with an important potential for expansion due to the important consequences of discharges and the complexity of their detection. The paper also discusses the recent progress, as well as the research needs and the challenges to be faced, in applying image sensors in this area. Although many of the cited research works focused on high-voltage applications, partial discharges can also occur in medium- and low-voltage applications.     Highly Accelerated Test Method for Characterizing Likelihood of Breakdown in HVDC Dielectric Materials

    Increasing application and development of HVDC technologies emphasizes the need for improved characterization of candidate insulating materials. Accurately predicting the lifetime to breakdown of dielectric materials by means of accelerated voltage step-up to breakdown tests can be prohibitively time consuming. Step-up to breakdown tests with sufficiently slow voltage ramp rates that continuously monitor leakage current have detected a distribution of DC partial discharge (DCPD) events occurring prior to breakdown, which increase with increasing field. These DCPD distributions are shown to correlate strongly with the likelihood of breakdown for four common polymers. Given that hundreds of DCPD events are typically observed in a single destructive, low-ramp rate, step-up test, measuring the distribution of the DCPD can potentially accelerate the characterization of the breakdown likelihood in candidate insulators by orders of magnitude in time. This relationship is discussed in the context of a dual-defect model of breakdown and thermally recoverable defects

    The objective of the proposed research is to design and develop a series of radio frequency identification (RFID) tag structures that exhibit good performance characteristics with cost optimization and can be realized on flexible substrates such as liquid crystal polymer (LCP), paper-based substrate and magnetic composite material for conformal applications. The demand for flexible RFID tags has recently increased tremendously due to the requirements of automatic identification in various areas. Several major challenges existing in today's RFID technologies need to be addressed before RFID can eventually march into everyone's daily life, such as how to design high performance tag antennas with effective impedance matching for passive RFID IC chips to optimize the power performance, how to fabricate ultra-low-cost RFID tags in order to facilitate mass production, how to integrate sensors with passive RFID tags for pervasive sensing applications, and how to realize battery-free active RFID tags in which changing battery is not longer needed. In this research, different RFID tag designs are realized on flexible substrates.     A Sensor System for Detecting and Localizing Partial Discharges in Power Transformers with Improved Immunity to Interferences

    The paper reports on the solution, principles, and application results related to a system for diagnosing main transformers in power plants via the radiofrequency method. The subject of the diagnostics is the occurrence of partial discharge activity in transformers. The technical solution of the system is characterized in the introductory section of the article. There then follows a description of the operating principle and the implemented novel advanced methods for signal detection and source localization. The results obtained from practical application of the system within the diagnostics of high-power transformers are presented as well. Because ambient electromagnetic disturbance was recognized as a major issue during the system development, novel detection methods were proposed, implemented, and verified. The principal approach utilizes an external radiofrequency sensor to detect outer impulse disturbance and to eliminate disturbance-triggered acquisitions, and it also ensures direct real-time visualization of the desired impulse signals. The ability of weak signal detection was verified via artificial impulse signal injection into the transformer. The developed detection methods were completed with localization techniques for signal source estimation. The desired impulse signal was detected and localized during full operation of the main transformer, despite the presence of strong electromagnetic interference
