Students' Perception of Using Group Work in English Class

Group work has become an essential part of modern methodology in teaching and learning because it offers teachers a powerful way to engage students and provides students with opportunities for cooperative learning. This study aimed to find out the students’ perception of using group work in English classes. Employing a survey design involving 50 tenth and eleventh graders, it was conducted in SMA 17 Agustus 1945 Jakarta. Data were collected through a questionnaire including five indicators. The collected data were analyzed using the descriptive technique. Findings revealed that group work had a positive impact on students’ attitudes. Moreover, group work enlarged their commitment in completing assignments

Improving Information Literacy through Wikipedia Editing in the Chemistry Classroom: Lessons Learned

Assignments in which students edit Wikipedia may help students learn about the complexities of information creation and production, while engaging them in researching and writing about topics related to class content. This chapter presents two case studies that illustrate how Wikipedia-based activities can be designed to achieve both chemistry and information literacy learning outcomes. In both examples, faculty partnered with a librarian to implement the Wikipedia editing assignments. Through these experiences, those involved learned about Wikipedia and its community, and identified promising practices for project requirements based on formal and informal assessment and observations. Reflections are offered on the value of using Wikipedia editing assignments and concrete suggestions for creating effective projects are offered

Using a cooperative learning strategy to increase undergraduate students’ engagement and performance: Bahir Dar university Psychology graduating students in focus

In the 21st century, preparing university students for real work and lifelong learning requires instructors to serve as facilitators of learning rather than as providers of information. Instruction needs to be learner-centered, active, enjoyable and engaging. As one form of active learning strategy, cooperative learning (e.g. group assignment) helps students to collaborate in the task actively and this in turn improves their learning engagement and performance. However, in my undergraduate course, when I encourage students to do assignments in groups, many of them do not take it seriously and are not committed, the final product being poor in terms of quality and participation. The objective of this action research was to improve the educational value of group assignment as one form of cooperative learning strategy by way of designing the task thoughtfully, following up and motivating students, providing constructive and timely feedback and ensuring greater engagement of students in the task. Third year psychology students volunteered to participate in the project. Phase I and Phase II (preliminary and actual action implementation make up the action research project). The outcomes of the preliminary and actual action implementation were then compared. The findings revealed that as a result of the intervention, students developed positive attitudes towards group assignment and they were more engaged in the second assignment as compared to the first (t= 6.51, p= 0.05). Students’ performances in the second test and group project was also improved (t= 2.80, p=0.05 and t=7.67, p=0.05 respectively). Informaatiolukutaidon opetus lukiossa : ohjatun tutkimisen elementit informaatiolukutaidon oppimistehtävissä

Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin, missä määrin suomalaisten opettajien ammatillisten käytäntöjen perustalle rakennetuissa informaatiolukutaidon oppimistehtävissä ja niiden ohjauksessa esiintyy ohjatun tutkimisen (Guided Inquiry) pedagogisia elementtejä. Ohjattu tutkiminen on informaatiolukutaidon ohjaukseen kehitetty malli, joka perustuu Carol C. Kuhlthaun tiedonhankinnan prosessimalliin. Tutkimuskohteena oli kaksi lukiokurssia, äidinkielen ja historian kurssit. Äidinkielen kurssilla oppilaat kirjoittivat ryhmätöinä artikkelit Wikipediaan ja historian kurssilla Wikipedia-tyyppiset artikkelit yläkoulujen ja lukioiden käyttöön tarkoitetulle Linkki-oppimisalustalle. Ohjatun tutkimisen pedagogiset elementit, joita tarkasteltiin, liittyivät oppimistehtävien oppimistavoitteisiin, vaiheistukseen, ohjaustiimin yhteistyöhön, ohjauksen aktiivisuuteen ja kohdentumiseen sekä yhteisöllisten työskentelymallien ja dokumentointityökalujen käyttöön. Tutkimustuloksista kävi ilmi, että vaikka tutkimuskohteena olevat kurssit perustuivat puhtaasti opettajien ammatillisille käytännöille ja kokemuksille, oli kursseilla havaittavissa ohjatun tutkimisen elementtejä. Osa niistä jäi suunnitelmien asteelle, osa toteutui. Toteutuksessa kuitenkin korostui monin paikoin lopputuotoksen merkitys itse prosessin ja muiden oppimistavoitteiden kustannuksella. Työskentelyprosessin kaikkia vaiheita ei huomioitu eikä hyödynnetty oppimisessa ohjatun tutkimisen tapaan. Paljastui myös, että kurssien välillä oli eroja liittyen ohjauksen aktiivisuuteen ja kohdentumiseen, mikä saattaa selittää aiemmin samasta aineistosta tehdyissä tutkimuksissa havaittuja kurssien välisiä eroja oppilaiden ryhmätyöskentelystrategioissa, ryhmätyökokemuksissa, oppimiskokemuksissa, omasanaisessa kirjoittamisessa ja lähteiden käytössä. Tutkimustulosten perusteella vastaavien oppimistehtävien suunnittelussa ja toteutuksessa tulisi kiinnittää huomiota erityisesti siihen, että oppimistavoitteet tehtäisiin selviksi oppilaille, prosessin alkuvaiheet huomioitaisiin paremmin ja niitä ohjattaisiin tietoisemmin, ja että ryhmätyön ohjaukseen ja prosessin seurantaan panostettaisiin. Sillä, että projektille varattaisiin riittävästi aikaa, olisi suuri merkitys kaikkien edellä mainittujen seikkojen suhteen
