    Creating smarter teaching and training environments: innovative set-up for collaborative hybrid learning

    This paper brings together previous work from a number of research projects and teaching initiatives in an effort to introduce good practice in setting up supportive environments for collaborative learning. The paper discusses prior use of social media in learning support, the role of dashboards for learning analytics in Global Software Development training, the use of optical head-mounted displays for feedback and the use of NodeXl visualization in managing distributed teams. The scope of the paper is to provide a structured approach in organizing the creation of smarter teaching and training environments and explore ways to coordinate learning scenarios with the use of various techniques. The paper also discusses challenges from integrating multiple innovative features in educational contexts. Finally the paper attempts to investigate the use of smart laboratories in establishing additional learning support and gather primary data from blended and hybrid learning pilot studies

    Cultural Influences on Collaborative Work in Software Engineering Teams

    International business activities increasingly lead to the formation of multicultural teams that work together as project teams, for a certain time both at a site as well as in virtual teams. Despite the modern conception of many companies that multicultural composite teams are more productive due to various perspectives and work styles, the ignorance and disrespect of these differences in work styles and perspectives can lead to misunderstanding and loss of productivity. In this paper, we report our findings from a systematic literature review that analyzes previous research on cross-cultural software engineering, to identify potential impacts of national cultural factors on collaborative approaches and behavior in software engineering teams. We discuss the current emerging state of knowledge and point out directions for advancing the understanding of cultural influences in this domain to lay the foundation for better collaboration design for cross-cultural software engineering teams

    GitAna: una aplicación para medir aspectos sociales en equipos virtuales de trabajo

    La conformación de equipos virtuales de trabajo, en donde los integrantes se encuentran dispersos geográficamente, ha crecido en los últimos tiempos favorecido por el uso creciente de las tecnologías de información y comunicación. Se espera que esa tendencia creciente continúe y se expanda a distintos sectores laborales de nuestra sociedad. Los aspectos sociales involucrados en los equipos de trabajo afectan significativamente el desempeño de los mismos; más aún en escenarios virtuales de trabajo donde las distancias culturales, idiomáticas y de husos horarios dificultan las relaciones personales. En el presente estudio se presenta una aplicación que permite medir en forma automática y on-line aspectos sociales en equipos virtuales de trabajo. Entre otras métricas la aplicación mide cohesión grupal, colaboración y polaridad de las interacciones. Se espera que esta herramienta sea un valioso aporte a la gestión de este tipo de equipos de trabajo.     A team performance model provided an organizing framework for studying multi-cultural distributed learning teams. Structural equation modeling was used to test for relationships among individual, cultural and attitudes about collaborative work factors and team performance. The paper describes this model and its theoretical basis and reports on results from two pilot projects involving 152 students from the US, Panama, UK, and Turkey. While the model shows satisfactory fit, the results suggest that other factors may also influence how well students work together on global software projects. Future research, followed by model development, should incorporate these factors to capture the complexity of the educational and training environments
