The Dynamics of Corruption and ICT Projects: Case Study from the Public Health System in India

    Get PDF
Corruption, as a research topic, because of its very nature, tends not to be explicitly discussed. Further, empirically it is not easy to get “data” on, as respondents rarely discuss this topic, and neither would it be discussed in formal reports and presentations. It is thus elusive but still permeates widely and arguably significantly shapes the trajectories of ICT projects in developing countries. Often, from the West the view taken is that officials and bureaucrats in developing countries are corrupt and responsible for failures of ICT projects. Arguably, this is an incomplete view, as there are “networks of corruption” in play involving international donors, ICT vendors, politicians and other actors. Dynamics within these networks give voice to corruption within particular contexts. In this paper, the dynamics of corruption, including the “macro-micro” linkages are traced in the context of a ICT project (based on free software and implemented by a not for profit NGO) for the public health sector in an Indian state. In trying to understand some of these dynamics of corruption, the paper contributes to research in IS in developing countries in 2 ways: practically tracing the implications of corruption on project implementation; arguing for a more explicit consideration of corruption by researchers interested in building a richer contextual understanding of ICT project implementation in developing countries

The effect of open innovation strategies on business models. A multiple case study in the automotive sector

Open innovation allows information to be obtained by a company from outside in, and vice versa, in order to achieve improved relationships and better innovation performance in all parties involved in the business environment. This study explores how the adoption of an open innovation strategy changes the business model, specifically, in the case of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Previous studies have mainly addressed this topic theoretically, and the original contribution of the approach in the present study stems from providing evidence from real cases. A multiple case study examines four cases in the automotive sector. A number of open innovation strategies are analysed, paying special attention to how they have shaped the company's business model and, ultimately, their impact on company performance. The overreaching conclusion is that the implementation of open innovation strategies helps companies to focus on its strengths and boosts them. This leads to a redefinition of the business model, so that they are better adapted not only to the essence of the companies but also to the demands of the market.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Remaining traditional with the core while implementing digital solutions : a multiple case study of fast-moving consumer goods companies about digitalization and business model innovation

    Get PDF
This dissertation explores the external and internal determinants influencing business model innovation in fast-moving consumer goods companies. It will further investigate the impact of digitalization-related factors on (existing) business models as well as the usage of digital technologies. In the end, barriers and success factors that shape business model innovation within the fast-moving consumer goods industry will be identified. In the literature review, definitions of the business model concept and its innovation are discussed. Based on those insights, the characteristics of business models in the fast-moving consumer goods industry are identified and a deepened understanding of the phenomenon on digitalization is created. Based on the theoretical insights gained in the literature review, a multiple case study spanning three different fast-moving consumer goods firms is performed. Business model developments and digitalization efforts of those three companies are investigated by the conduct of two semi-structured interviews per case with related managers, complemented with secondary data. It has been found that managing an old business model and a new business model that require different assets at the same time may create frictions that diminish profitability. As suppliers and distributors are highly interdependent and the German FMCG market is composed of a few big players, each interviewed company engages in different strategies and degrees of business model innovation and digitalization efforts. Especially adaptability seems to be a success factor to sustainable, long-term success.

A collaborative framework for browser games development

    Get PDF
This dissertation describes a conceptual model and prototype for a collaborative framework for browser games development using open source and open content. There is an extensive literature review exploring several areas like game development, modding, open source software development, open content and creative commons. The most relevant ideas about game development and collaboration are then used in defining the conceptual model of the framework with the objective of facilitating community creation and collaboration. Finally the implementation of prototype is explained in detail and the practical difficulties in implementing the conceptual model are addressed. This research shows that a collaboration framework for creating open source and open content browser games is possible and paves way for future studies about the community creation in this type of collaborative systems.
