Does society show differential attention to researchers based on gender and field?
While not all researchers prioritize social impact, it is undeniably a
crucial aspect that adds significance to their work. The objective of this
paper is to explore potential gender differences in the social attention paid
to researchers and to examine their association with specific fields of study.
To achieve this goal, the paper analyzes four dimensions of social influence
and examines three measures of social attention to researchers. The dimensions
are media influence (mentions in mainstream news), political influence
(mentions in public policy reports), social media influence (mentions in
Twitter), and educational influence (mentions in Wikipedia). The measures of
social attention to researchers are: proportion of publications with social
mentions (social attention orientation), mentions per publication (level of
social attention), and mentions per mentioned publication (intensity of social
attention). By analyzing the rankings of authors -- for the four dimensions
with the three measures in the 22 research fields of the Web of Science
database -- and by using Spearman correlation coefficients, we conclude that:
1) significant differences are observed between fields; 2) the dimensions
capture different and independent aspects of the social impact. Finally, we use
non-parametric means comparison tests to detect gender bias in social
attention. We conclude that for most fields and dimensions with enough non-zero
altmetrics data, gender differences in social attention are not predominant,
but are still present and vary across fields.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, 7 table
Study on open science: The general state of the play in Open Science principles and practices at European life sciences institutes
Nowadays, open science is a hot topic on all levels and also is one of the priorities of the European Research Area. Components that are commonly associated with open science are open access, open data, open methodology, open source, open peer review, open science policies and citizen science. Open science may a great potential to connect and influence the practices of researchers, funding institutions and the public. In this paper, we evaluate the level of openness based on public surveys at four European life sciences institute
Innovating the scenario of scientific publishing in design: designing âliving publicationsâ
This article presents an ongoing research project aiming at innovating the modalities and formats of scientific and academic publication of design research.
The digital transformation and the open access paradigm have a considerable impact on the circulation of high-quality scientific production at global level: the challenge is to achieve innovative forms of authoritative, high-impact and effective scholarly communication, pursued with a multiscale and mixed media strategy, in order to guarantee an extended impact, while maintaining rigour and authority.
In this context the scientific publication of design is taking on new forms and objectives too, so the design discipline can be a pivotal field for the experimentation and discussion of new scientific publication formats for scientific research.
The article presents the proposal of Living Publications, that, stemming from a case studies research, supports the envisioning of future scenarios of scientific publishing and the development of the features of an experimental prototype in the design domain

Congress UPV Proceedings of the 21ST International Conference on Science and Technology Indicators
This is the book of proceedings of the 21st Science and Technology Indicators Conference that took place
in València (Spain) from 14th to 16th of September 2016.
The conference theme for this year, âPeripheries, frontiers and beyondâ aimed to study the development and
use of Science, Technology and Innovation indicators in spaces that have not been the focus of current indicator
development, for example, in the Global South, or the Social Sciences and Humanities.
The exploration to the margins and beyond proposed by the theme has brought to the STI Conference an
interesting array of new contributors from a variety of fields and geographies.
This yearâs conference had a record 382 registered participants from 40 different countries, including 23
European, 9 American, 4 Asia-Pacific, 4 Africa and Near East. About 26% of participants came from outside
of Europe.
There were also many participants (17%) from organisations outside academia including governments (8%),
businesses (5%), foundations (2%) and international organisations (2%). This is particularly important in a
field that is practice-oriented.
The chapters of the proceedings attest to the breadth of issues discussed. Infrastructure, benchmarking
and use of innovation indicators, societal impact and mission oriented-research, mobility and careers, social
sciences and the humanities, participation and culture, gender, and altmetrics, among others.
We hope that the diversity of this Conference has fostered productive dialogues and synergistic ideas and
made a contribution, small as it may be, to the development and use of indicators that, being more inclusive,
will foster a more inclusive and fair world
5th International Conference on Advanced Research Methods and Analytics (CARMA 2023)
Research methods in economics and social sciences are evolving with the increasing availability of Internet and Big Data sources of information. As these sources, methods, and applications become more interdisciplinary, the 5th International Conference on Advanced Research Methods and Analytics (CARMA) is a forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and advances on how emerging research methods and sources are applied to different fields of social sciences as well as to discuss current and future challenges.MartĂnez Torres, MDR.; Toral MarĂn, S. Memorias. LatmĂŠtricas 2021
In 2019, the collectives, LATmetrics and the Latin American Symposium on Metric Studies in Science and Technology agreed to hold a joint event in 2021. The purpose of this alliance was to offer a space for common dialogue that allowed knowing the general panorama of metric studies. of science and technology from a comprehensive and multidimensional point of view in Latin America. In addition to the general state of the art of metrics on science and technology, the debate on the role of these instruments was of interest, in two particular aspects: (a) the national systems of evaluation of scientific and technological production, the exploration of maps of knowledge, the projection of trends, the forecast of discoveries and (b) the development of metric instruments that would make it possible to observe the role of science and technology in social transformation. Finally, in the field of social transformation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, science and technology metrics played a central role in guiding or misguiding global research teams. It was important to develop a space that made it possible to expose the main advances from Latin America in the generation of tools to support the search for solutions to the multiple problems that science and technology face to solve problems of different pandemics
