Analysis of an On-Line Stability Monitoring Approach for DC Microgrid Power Converters
An online approach to evaluate and monitor the stability margins of dc microgrid power converters is presented in this paper. The discussed online stability monitoring technique is based on the Middlebrook's loop-gain measurement technique, adapted to the digitally controlled power converters. In this approach, a perturbation is injected into a specific digital control loop of the converter and after measuring the loop gain, its crossover frequency and phase margin are continuously evaluated and monitored. The complete analytical derivation of the model, as well as detailed design aspects, are reported. In addition, the presence of multiple power converters connected to the same dc bus, all having the stability monitoring unit, is also investigated. An experimental microgrid prototype is implemented and considered to validate the theoretical analysis and simulation results, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the digital implementation of the technique for different control loops. The obtained results confirm the expected performance of the stability monitoring tool in steady-state and transient operating conditions. The proposed method can be extended to generic control loops in power converters operating in dc microgrids
Maximum power point tracking converter based on the open-circuit voltage method for thermoelectric generators
Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) convert heat energy into electricity in a quantity dependant on the temperature difference across them and the electrical load applied. It is critical to track the optimum electrical operating point through the use of power electronic converters controlled by a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm. The MPPT method based on the opencircuit voltage is arguably the most suitable for the linear electrical characteristic of TEGs. This paper presents an innovative way to perform the open-circuit voltage measure during the pseudo-normal operation of the interfacing power electronic converter. The proposed MPPT technique is supported by theoretical analysis and used to control a synchronous buck-boost converter. The prototype MPPT converter is controlled by an inexpensive microcontroller, and a lead-acid battery is used to accumulate the harvested energy. Experimental results using commercial TEG devices prove that the converter accurately tracks the maximum power point during thermal transients. Precise measurements in steady state show that the converter finds the maximum power point with a tracking efficiency of 99.85%
Performance Evaluation of Fuel Cell and Microturbine as Distributed Generators in a Microgrid
This paper presents dynamic models of distributed generators (DG) and investigates
dynamic behaviour of the DG units within a microgrid system. The DG units include micro
turbine, fuel cell and the electronically interfaced sources. The voltage source converter is
adopted as the electronic interface which is equipped with its controller to maintain
stability of the microgrid during small signal dynamics. This paper also introduces power
management strategies and implements the DG load sharing concept to maintain the
microgrid operation in standalone, grid-connected and islanding modes of operation. The
results demonstrate the operation and performance of the microturbine and SOFC as
distributed generators in a microgrid.

A Robust Consensus Algorithm for Current Sharing and Voltage Regulation in DC Microgrids
In this paper a novel distributed control algorithm for current sharing and
voltage regulation in Direct Current (DC) microgrids is proposed. The DC
microgrid is composed of several Distributed Generation units (DGUs), including
Buck converters and current loads. The considered model permits an arbitrary
network topology and is affected by unknown load demand and modelling
uncertainties. The proposed control strategy exploits a communication network
to achieve proportional current sharing using a consensus-like algorithm.
Voltage regulation is achieved by constraining the system to a suitable
manifold. Two robust control strategies of Sliding Mode (SM) type are developed
to reach the desired manifold in a finite time. The proposed control scheme is
formally analyzed, proving the achievement of proportional current sharing,
while guaranteeing that the weighted average voltage of the microgrid is
identical to the weighted average of the voltage references.Comment: 12 page
Generalized small-signal modelling of dual active bridge DC/DC converter
this paper presents a novel generalised approach of the small-signal modelling of dual active bridge (DAB) DC/DC converter. The adopted analysis is based on a per-unit fundamental frequency representation of the DAB. The outcome of the proposed modelling approach is a small signal, linearised, state-space DAB model; which is considered as a main building block for future control applications. The developed small signal DAB model includes all possible degrees of freedom affecting the performance of the DAB; this includes the voltage conversion ratio to allow the study of all DAB operation modes (i.e.: unity-gain and buck/boost modes.). Furthermore, since triple phase shift control (TPS) is used in this development work, the proposed model incorporates phase shift in addition to duty ratios. This feature allows for bridge voltage regulation, which is essential for efficient DAB operation in the case of buck/boost operation. Another key achievement is that the proposed small signal modelling methodology can be applied to any bidirectional DC-DC converter regardless of ratings, parameter values and number of ports. Discussion of the technology and research in fuel injectors common rail system
Common rail is one of the most important components in a diesel and gasoline direct injection system. It features a high-pressure (100 bar) fuel rail feeding solenoid valves, as opposed to a low-pressure fuel pump feeding unit injectors. Third-generation common rail diesels now feature piezoelectric injectors for increased precision, with fuel pressures up to 2,500 bar. The purpose of this review paper is to investigate the technology and research in fuel injectors common rail system. This review paper focuses on component of common rail injection system, pioneer of common rail injection, characteristics of common rail injection system, method to reduce smoke and NOx emission simultaneously and impact of common rail injection system. Based on our research, it can be concluded that common rail injection gives many benefit such as good for the engine performance, safe to use, and for to reduce the emission of the vehicle. Fuel injection common rail system is the modern technology that must be developed. Nowadays, our earth is polluting by vehicle output such as smoke. If the common rail system is developed, it can reduce the pollution and keep our atmosphere clean and safe
Power-Based Droop Control in DC Microgrids Enabling Seamless Disconnection From Upstream Grids
This paper proposes a local power-based droop controller for distributed energy resource converters in dc microgrids that are connected to upstream grids by grid-interface converters. During normal operation, the grid-interface converter imposes the microgrid bus voltage, and the proposed controller allows power flow regulation at distributed energy resource converters\u2019 output. On the other hand, during abnormal operation of the grid-interface converter (e.g., due to faults in the upstream grid), the proposed controller allows bus voltage regulation by droop control. Notably, the controller can autonomously convert from power flow control to droop control, without any need of bus voltage variation detection schemes or communication with other microgrid components, which enables seamless transitions between these two modes of operation. Considering distributed energy resource converters employing the power-based droop control, the operation modes of a single converter and of the whole microgrid are defined and investigated herein. The controller design is also introduced. Furthermore, the power sharing performance of this control approach is analyzed and compared with that of classical droop control. The experimental results from a laboratory-scale dc microgrid prototype are reported to show the final performances of the proposed power-based droop control
