    Identifying and Profiling Radical Reviewer Collectives in Digital Product Reviews

    Ecommerce sites are flooded with spam reviews and opinions. People are usually hired to impede or promote particular brands by writing extremely negative or positive reviews. It is usually performed in groups. Various studies have been conducted to identify and scan those spam groups. However, there is still a knowledge gap when it comes to detecting groups targeting a brand, instead of products only. In this study, we conducted a systematic review of recent studies related to detection of extremist reviewer groups. Most of the researchers have extracted these groups with a data mining approach over brand similarities so that users are clustered. This study is an attempt to detect spammers with various models tested by various reviewers. This study presents proven conceptual models and algorithms which have been presented in previous studies to compute the spamming level of extremist reviewers in ecommerce sites and online marketplace

    xFraud: Explainable Fraud Transaction Detection

    At online retail platforms, it is crucial to actively detect the risks of transactions to improve customer experience and minimize financial loss. In this work, we propose xFraud, an explainable fraud transaction prediction framework which is mainly composed of a detector and an explainer. The xFraud detector can effectively and efficiently predict the legitimacy of incoming transactions. Specifically, it utilizes a heterogeneous graph neural network to learn expressive representations from the informative heterogeneously typed entities in the transaction logs. The explainer in xFraud can generate meaningful and human-understandable explanations from graphs to facilitate further processes in the business unit. In our experiments with xFraud on real transaction networks with up to 1.1 billion nodes and 3.7 billion edges, xFraud is able to outperform various baseline models in many evaluation metrics while remaining scalable in distributed settings. In addition, we show that xFraud explainer can generate reasonable explanations to significantly assist the business analysis via both quantitative and qualitative evaluations.Comment: This is the extended version of a full paper to appear in PVLDB 15 (3) (VLDB 2022

    DETECTING AND CHARACTERIZING EXTREMIST REVIEWER GROUPS IN ONLINE PRODUCT REVIEWS

    Online marketplaces often witness opinion spam in the form of reviews. People are often hired to target specific brands for promoting or impeding them by writing highly positive or negative reviews. This often is done collectively in groups. Although some previous studies attempted to identify and analyze such opinion spam groups, little has been explored to spot those groups who target a brand as a whole, instead of just products. In this article, we collected the reviews from the Amazon product review site and manually labeled a set of 923 candidate reviewer groups. The groups are extracted using frequent itemset mining over brand similarities such that users are clustered together if they have mutually reviewed (products of) a lot of brands. We hypothesize that the nature of the reviewer groups is dependent on eight features specific to a (group, brand) pair. We develop a feature-based supervised model to classify candidate groups as extremist entities. We run multiple classifiers for the task of classifying a group based on the reviews written by the users of that group to determine whether the group shows signs of extremity. A three-layer perceptron-based classifier turns out to be the best classifier. We further study behaviors of such groups in detail to understand the dynamics of brand-level opinion fraud better. These behaviors include consistency in ratings, review sentiment, verified purchase, review dates, and helpful votes received on reviews. Surprisingly, we observe that there are a lot of verified reviewers showing extreme sentiment, which, on further investigation, leads to ways to circumvent the existing mechanisms in place to prevent unofficial incentives on Amazon

    Marketing Intelligence: Boom or Bust of Service Marketing?

    Marketing intelligence fosters two major developments within digital service marketing. On the one hand, a boom of services seems to have evolved, accelerated by the opportunities of marketing intelligence. It has contributed to the optimization of customer experiences, e.g., supported by mobile, personalized, and customized marketing services. On the other hand, (digital) self-services are likely to pervert the term โ€œserviceโ€. Lifecycle marketing, including annoying marketing communication in real-time, automated price adjustment and programmatic advertising based on artificial intelligence, affects the vision of fully standardized marketing automation. Additionally, there are incentives to pollute the digital information in order to manufacture opinions. Fake news is one popular example. This leads to the (open) question if marketing intelligence means service boom or bust of marketing. This contribution aims to elaborate the boom-and-bust aspects of marketing intelligence and suggests a trade-off. In online platforms, people influence each other, and have tendency to reflect their opinions in decision-making. Social Network Services (SNSs) and E-commerce are typical example of online platforms. User behaviors in online platforms can be defined as relation between user and platform components. A user's purchase is a relationship between a user and a product, and a user's check-in is a relationship between a user and a place. Here, information such as action time, rating, tag, etc. may be included. In many studies, platform user behavior is represented in graph form. At this time, the elements constituting the nodes of the graph are composed of objects such as users and products and places within the platform, and the interaction between the platform elements and the user can be expressed as two nodes being connected. In this study, I present studies to identify potential networks that affect the user's behavior graph defined on the two platforms. In ANES, I focus on representation learning for social link inference based on user trajectory data. While traditional methods predict relations between users by considering hand-crafted features, recent studies first perform representation learning using network/node embedding or graph neural networks (GNNs) for downstream tasks such as node classification and link prediction. However, those approaches fail to capture behavioral patterns of individuals ingrained in periodical visits or long-distance movements. To better learn behavioral patterns, this paper proposes a novel scheme called ANES (Aspect-oriented Network Embedding for Social link inference). ANES learns aspect-oriented relations between users and Point-of-Interests (POIs) within their contexts. ANES is the first approach that extracts the complex behavioral pattern of users from both trajectory data and the structure of User-POI bipartite graphs. Extensive experiments on several real-world datasets show that ANES outperforms state-of-the-art baselines. In contrast to active social networks, people are connected to other users regardless of their intentions in some platforms, such as online shopping websites and restaurant review sites. They do not have any information about each other in advance, and they only have a common point which is that they have visited or have planned to visit same place or purchase a product. Interestingly, users have tendency to be influenced by the review data on their purchase intentions. Unfortunately, this instinct is easily exploited by opinion spammers. In SC-Com, I focus on opinion spam detection in online shopping services. In many cases, my decision-making process is closely related to online reviews. However, there have been threats of opinion spams by hired reviewers increasingly, which aim to mislead potential customers by hiding genuine consumers opinions. Opinion spams should be filed up collectively to falsify true information. Fortunately, I propose the way to spot the possibility to detect them from their collusiveness. In this paper, I propose SC-Com, an optimized collusive community detection framework. It constructs the graph of reviewers from the collusiveness of behavior and divides a graph by communities based on their mutual suspiciousness. After that, I extract community-based and temporal abnormality features which are critical to discriminate spammers from other genuine users. I show that my method detects collusive opinion spam reviewers effectively and precisely from their collective behavioral patterns. In the real-world dataset, my approach showed prominent performance while only considering primary data such as time and ratings.     Corporate governance (CG) is a comprehensive term that incorporates many distinct facets. Because of numerous financial scandals, public knowledge of CG has increased significantly, particularly in emerging countries like Malaysia. The effectiveness of organizations' adherence with CG legislation and standards is still in question, resulting in numerous incidents of accounting fraud. Furthermore, both internally and externally, company performance is contingent on the effectiveness of Corporate Governance procedures. The purpose of this study is to examine the determinants of internal corporate governance mechanisms and the affect towards financial statement fraud.
