    Potential of RFID technology in logistics - Case Metso Paper -

    Viime vuosina palveluliiketoiminnan merkitys ydinosaamista tukevana prosessina on kasvanut merkittävästi. Metso Paperin ydinosaamista on paperikoneiden valmistus mutta Service liiketoimintaan panostetaan vahvasti ja siltä odotetaan kasvua. Tällä osa-alueella logistiikalla ja etenkin materiaalin tunnistamisella on iso vaikutus prosessien tehokkuuteen. Viivakoodi on yleisesti ollut hallitseva automaattisen tunnistamisen menetelmä mutta sillä on omat rajoituksensa. RFID:llä nämä rajoitukset voidaan voittaa. Standardisoinnin sekä teknisen kehityksen ansiosta se on nopeasti noussut vaihtoehtoiseksi menetelmäksi tehostaa logistiikkaa. Siksi Metso Paper Service on nähnyt RFID tutkimuksen tarpeelliseksi. Tämän Pro Gradu tutkimuksen tarkoitus on selvittää voidaanko RFID:llä tehostaa Metso Paper Servicen nimettyjä prosesseja. Tavoitteena on tunnistaa ne prosessit joissa RFID:llä voitaisiin saavuttaa liiketoiminnallisia parannuksia ja kustannussäästöjä nykyiseen toimintamalliin verrattuna. Tutkimus on toteutettu haastattelemalla avainhenkilöitä teema kysymyksillä 8:sta toimeksiantajan nimeämästä prosessista. Haastattelun ja tilastollisen aineiston perusteella nykyiset toimintamallit ja materiaalin tunnistamiseen liittyvät oleelliset asiat on kuvattu prosessikarttoineen. Lisäksi teoriaosa esittelee RFID tekniikan pääosin tasolla, jonka käyttäjän on hyvä tietää. Tältä pohjalta on analysoitu pystytäänkö RFID:n avulla tehostamaan prosessin toimintaa. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin että useampi prosessi kehittyisi jollakin tavalla RFID:stä mutta toteutettavuus ja saavutettavan hyödyn määrä vaihtelevat. Kuitenkin yksi prosessi muodostui muita selvästi sopivammaksi. Tutkimuksen viimeisessä osassa on selvitetty RFID:n tarkemmat toiminnalliset sekä taloudelliset vaikutukset tähän prosessiin, niin tarkasti kuin se etukäteen on mahdollista.     The results are presented of a study which identifies over 100 new and highly capable space systems for the 1980-2000 time period: civilian systems which could bring benefits to large numbers of average citizens in everyday life, much enhance the kinds and levels of public services, increase the economic motivation for industrial investment in space, expand scientific horizons; and, in the military area, systems which could materially alter current concepts of tactical and strategic engagements. The requirements for space transportation, orbital support, and technology for these systems are derived, and those requirements likely to be shared between NASA and the DoD in the time period identified. The high leverage technologies for the time period are identified as very large microwave antennas and optics, high energy power subsystems, high precision and high power lasers, microelectronic circuit complexes and data processors, mosaic solid state sensing devices, and long-life cryogenic refrigerators

    How to Win a Hot Dog Eating Contest: Distributed Incremental View Maintenance with Batch Updates

    In the quest for valuable information, modern big data applications continuously monitor streams of data. These applications demand low latency stream processing even when faced with high volume and velocity of incoming changes and the user’s desire to ask complex queries. In this paper, we study low-latency incremental computation of complex SQL queries in both local and distributed streaming environments. We develop a technique for the efficient incrementalization of queries with nested aggregates for batch updates. We identify the cases in which batch processing can boost the performance of incremental view maintenance but also demonstrate that tuple-at-a-time processing often can achieve better performance in local mode. Batch updates are essential for enabling distributed incremental view maintenance and amortizing the cost of network communication and synchronization. We show how to derive incremental programs optimized for running on large-scale processing platforms. Our implementation of distributed incremental view maintenance can process tens of million of tuples with few-second latency using hundreds of nodes

    Analytical Queries: A Comprehensive Survey

    Modern hardware heterogeneity brings efficiency and performance opportunities for analytical query processing. In the presence of continuous data volume and complexity growth, bridging the gap between recent hardware advancements and the data processing tools ecosystem is paramount for improving the speed of ETL and model development. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of existing analytical query processing approaches as well as the use and design of systems that use heterogeneous hardware for the task. We then analyze state-of-the-art solutions and identify missing pieces. The last two chapters discuss the identified problems and present our view on how the ecosystem should evolve

    The Effects of Advanced Analytics and Machine Learning on the Transportation of Natural Gas

    This qualitative single case study describes the effects of an advanced analytic and machine learning system (AAML) has on the transportation of natural gas pipelines and the causes for failure to fully utilize the advanced analytic and machine learning system. This study\u27s guiding theory was the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model and Transformation Leadership. The factors for failure to fully utilize AAML systems were studied, and the factors that made the AAML system successful were also examined. Data were collected through participant interviews. This study indicates that the primary factors for failure to fully utilize AAML systems are training and resource allocation. The AAML system successfully increased the participants\u27 productivity and analytical abilities by eliminating the many manual steps involved in producing reports and analyzing business conditions. The AAML system also allowed the organization to gather and analyze real-time data in a volume and manner that would have been impossible before the AAML system was installed. The leadership team brought about the AAML system\u27s success through transformation leadership by encouraging creativity, spurring innovation while providing the proper funding, time, and personnel to support the AAML system

    Automatic physical database design : recommending materialized views

    This work discusses physical database design while focusing on the problem of selecting materialized views for improving the performance of a database system. We first address the satisfiability and implication problems for mixed arithmetic constraints. The results are used to support the construction of a search space for view selection problems. We proposed an approach for constructing a search space based on identifying maximum commonalities among queries and on rewriting queries using views. These commonalities are used to define candidate views for materialization from which an optimal or near-optimal set can be chosen as a solution to the view selection problem. Using a search space constructed this way, we address a specific instance of the view selection problem that aims at minimizing the view maintenance cost of multiple materialized views using multi-query optimization techniques. Further, we study this same problem in the context of a commercial database management system in the presence of memory and time restrictions. We also suggest a heuristic approach for maintaining the views while guaranteeing that the restrictions are satisfied. Finally, we consider a dynamic version of the view selection problem where the workload is a sequence of query and update statements. In this case, the views can be created (materialized) and dropped during the execution of the workload. We have implemented our approaches to the dynamic view selection problem and performed extensive experimental testing. Our experiments show that our approaches perform in most cases better than previous ones in terms of effectiveness and efficiency
