    Speed-gradient adaptive high-gain observers for synchronization of chaotic systems

    "We address the problem of output feedback synchronization of certain chaotic systems, under parameter uncertainty. That is, given a master system, the objective is to design a slave system that copies the dynamics of the master and reconstructs both the state and the values of the constant parameters of the master system. Hence, the synchronization problem that we address enters in the framework of Pecora and Carroll and relies on adaptive observer theory. In particular, the conditions that we impose take the form of persistency of excitation.

    Synchronization problems for unidirectional feedback coupled nonlinear systems

    In this paper we consider three different synchronization problems consisting in designing a nonlinear feedback unidirectional coupling term for two (possibly chaotic) dynamical systems in order to drive the trajectories of one of them, the slave system, to a reference trajectory or to a prescribed neighborhood of the reference trajectory of the second dynamical system: the master system. If the slave system is chaotic then synchronization can be viewed as the control of chaos; namely the coupling term allows to suppress the chaotic motion by driving the chaotic system to a prescribed reference trajectory. Assuming that the entire vector field representing the velocity of the state can be modified, three different methods to define the nonlinear feedback synchronizing controller are proposed: one for each of the treated problems. These methods are based on results from the small parameter perturbation theory of autonomous systems having a limit cycle, from nonsmooth analysis and from the singular perturbation theory respectively.     A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering. Johannesburg, 2016An investigation and analysis of a collection of different techniques, for estimating the states of nonlinear systems, was undertaken. It was found that most of the existing literature on the topic could be organized into several groups of nonlinear observer design techniques, of which each group follows a specific concept and slight variations thereof. From out of this investigation it was discovered that a variation of the adaptive observer could be successfully applied to numerous nonlinear systems, given only limited output information. This particular technique formed the foundation on which a design procedure was developed in order to asymptotically estimate the states of nonlinear systems of a certain form, using only partial state information available. Lyapunov stability theory was used to prove the validity of this technique, given that certain conditions and assumptions are satisfied. A heuristic procedure was then developed to get a linearized model of the error transient behaviour that could form the upper bounds of the transient times of the observer. The technique above, characterized by a design algorithm, was then applied to three well-known nonlinear systems; namely the Lorenz attractor, the Rössler attractor, and the Van Der Pol oscillator. The results, illustrated through numerical simulation, clearly indicate that the technique developed is successful, provided all assumptions and conditions are satisfied.MT201

    Estimation of Liquid Level in a Harsh Environment Using Chaotic Observer

    The increased demand for liquid level measurement has been a key factor in designing accurate and reliable control systems. Here, a study was carried out to calculate the liquid level in a tank using a pressure sensor for changes in inlet liquid parameters like temperature, density and velocity. Prediction of their variables for the long term is essential due to the randomness present in the input and measurement. Hence, observer design for state estimation of a non-linear dynamic system with uncertainties in the measurement and process becomes important. This work provides a feedback observer solution for a system with multiple inputs and single measurable output. A full state observer model is developed to estimate a system’s states with a sensor placed at a definite position from the pipe’s input point through which the liquid flows at different densities and temperatures. Using the observability properties, Luenberger full state observer is designed by various methods, verified using MATLAB and SIMULINK for the system state estimation. To incorporate process noise and measurement noise, the Kalman estimator is integrated with the system. Chaotic systems are susceptible to initial conditions, variations in parameters and are complex dynamic systems. However, providing consistently precise measurements through particular meters necessitates time-consuming computations that can be reduced by employing machine learning approaches that make use of optimizers. The results obtained are compared with the prediction models obtained using Artificial Neural Networks and are validated through the readings obtained from the experimental setup

    Fractional Order Fault Tolerant Control - A Survey

    In this paper, a comprehensive review of recent advances and trends regarding Fractional Order Fault Tolerant Control (FOFTC) design is presented. This novel robust control approach has been emerging in the last decade and is still gathering great research efforts mainly because of its promising results and outcomes. The purpose of this study is to provide a useful overview for researchers interested in developing this interesting solution for plants that are subject to faults and disturbances with an obligation for a maintained performance level. Throughout the paper, the various works related to FOFTC in literature are categorized first by considering their research objective between fault detection with diagnosis and fault tolerance with accommodation, and second by considering the nature of the studied plants depending on whether they are modelized by integer order or fractional order models. One of the main drawbacks of these approaches lies in the increase in complexity associated with introducing the fractional operators, their approximation and especially during the stability analysis. A discussion on the main disadvantages and challenges that face this novel fractional order robust control research field is given in conjunction with motivations for its future development. This study provides a simulation example for the application of a FOFTC against actuator faults in a Boeing 747 civil transport aircraft is provided to illustrate the efficiency of such robust control strategies

    Output Global Oscillatory Synchronization of Heterogeneous Systems

    International audienceThe global output synchronization problem for heterogeneous nonlinear systems having relative degree 2 or higher is studied. The proposed approach consists in two steps. First, a partial projection of individual subsystems into the Brockett oscillators is performed using a sliding-mode control. Second, the network of these oscillators is synchronized using the global synchronization results of a particular second order nonlinear oscillator model from Ahmed et al. (2019). Our approach is based on output feedback and uses a higher order sliding mode observer to estimate the states and perturbations of the synchronized nonlinear systems. Along with numerical simulations, the performance of the proposed synchronization scheme is experimentally verified on a network of Van der Pol oscillators
