Non-myopic sensor management framework for ballistic missile tracking applications
textWhen hostile missile raids are launched, protecting allied assets requires that many targets be tracked simultaneously. In these raids, it is possible that the number of missiles could outnumber the sensors available to measure them. In these situations, communication between sensors can be utilized along with dynamic task planning to increase the amount of knowledge available concerning these missiles. Since any allied decisions must depend on the knowledge available from the sensors, it follows that improving the overall knowledge will improve the ability of allies to protect their assets through improved decision making. The goal of the this research effort is to create a Sensor Resource Management (SRM) algorithm to optimize the information available during these missile raids, as well as strengthening the simulation framework required to evaluate the performance of the SRM. The SRM must be capable of near-real-time run time so that it could potentially be deployed in a real-world system. The SRM must be capable of providing time-varying assignments to sensors, allowing more than one target to be observed by a single sensor. The SRM must predict measurements based on sensor models to assess the potential information gain by each assignment. Using these predictions, an optimal allocation of all sensors must be constructed. The initial simulation, upon which this work was built, was capable of simulating a set number of missiles launched simultaneously, providing appropriate charts to display the accuracy of knowledge on each target as well as their predicted impact locations. Communication delays are implemented within the simulation, and sensor models are refined. In refining the sensor models, they are given geometric limitations such as range and viewing angles. Additionally, simulated measurements incorporate geometric considerations to provide more realistic values. The SRM is also improved to account for the details added to the simulation. These improvements include creating assignment schedules and allowing a time-varying numbers of targets. Sliding Mode Control
The main objective of this monograph is to present a broad range of well worked out, recent application studies as well as theoretical contributions in the field of sliding mode control system analysis and design. Recent Advances in Robust Control
Robust control has been a topic of active research in the last three decades culminating in H_2/H_\infty and \mu design methods followed by research on parametric robustness, initially motivated by Kharitonov's theorem, the extension to non-linear time delay systems, and other more recent methods. The two volumes of Recent Advances in Robust Control give a selective overview of recent theoretical developments and present selected application examples. The volumes comprise 39 contributions covering various theoretical aspects as well as different application areas. Study of challenges in technology development and market penetration of hybrid electric vehicles in Canada
Growing concerns of the economic and environmental impact of petroleum combustion by on-road transportation have accelerated the development of alternative fuel vehicles; of these, the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is currently the most commercially successful technology. It integrates an electric drivetrain to the internal combustion engine for optimized engine operation giving significantly higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions. However, despite their well recognized benefits, Canadian consumers have shown reluctance in adapting HEVs so far. This thesis discusses the immediate need for Canada to adopt more efficient and eco-friendly transportation systems and analyzes the cost effectiveness and tailpipe emissions of HEVs that offer a suitable alternative. The factors inhibiting market acceptance of hybrids are have been reviewed and a set of comprehensive policy guidelines and measures have been proposed to provide financial incentives, enforce emission regulations and support technology development of hybrid vehicles. As part of the highlighted target, challenges in key areas of HEV technology have been discussed and one such challenge is addressed by proposing a more robust electric motor drive for vehicle traction

[EN] The present book is divided into two volumes (Volume I: articles 1–23, and Volume II: articles 24–54) which compile the articles and communications submitted to the Topical Collection ”Feature Papers of Drones” during the years 2020 to 2022 describing novel or new cutting-edge designs, developments, and/or applications of unmanned vehicles (drones). Articles 1–8 are devoted to the developments of drone design, where new concepts and modeling strategies as well as effective designs that improve drone stability and autonomy are introduced.
