Image Analysis using Color Co-occurrence Matrix Textural Features for Predicting Nitrogen Content in Spinach
This study aimed to determine the nitrogen content of spinach leaves by using computer imaging technology. The application of Color Co-occurrence Matrix (CCM) texture analysis was used to recognize the pattern of nitrogen content in spinach leaves. The texture analysis consisted of 40 CCM textural features constructed from RGB and grey colors. From the 40 textural features, the best features-subset was selected by using features selection method. Features selection method can increase the accuracy of image analysis using ANN model to predict nitrogen content of spinach leaves. The combination of ANN with Ant Colony Optimization resulted in the most optimal modelling with mean square error validation value of 0.0000083 and the R2 testing-set data = 0.99 by using 10 CCM textural features as the input of ANN. The computer vision method using ANN model which has been developed can be used as non-invasive sensing device to predict nitrogen content of spinach and for guiding farmers in the accurate application of their nitrogen fertilization strategies using low cost computer imaging technology
Classification of Arrhythmia by Using Deep Learning with 2-D ECG Spectral Image Representation
The electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most extensively employed signals
used in the diagnosis and prediction of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The ECG
signals can capture the heart's rhythmic irregularities, commonly known as
arrhythmias. A careful study of ECG signals is crucial for precise diagnoses of
patients' acute and chronic heart conditions. In this study, we propose a
two-dimensional (2-D) convolutional neural network (CNN) model for the
classification of ECG signals into eight classes; namely, normal beat,
premature ventricular contraction beat, paced beat, right bundle branch block
beat, left bundle branch block beat, atrial premature contraction beat,
ventricular flutter wave beat, and ventricular escape beat. The one-dimensional
ECG time series signals are transformed into 2-D spectrograms through
short-time Fourier transform. The 2-D CNN model consisting of four
convolutional layers and four pooling layers is designed for extracting robust
features from the input spectrograms. Our proposed methodology is evaluated on
a publicly available MIT-BIH arrhythmia dataset. We achieved a state-of-the-art
average classification accuracy of 99.11\%, which is better than those of
recently reported results in classifying similar types of arrhythmias. The
performance is significant in other indices as well, including sensitivity and
specificity, which indicates the success of the proposed method.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for future publication in Remote

Hyperspectral band selection using crossover based gravitational search algorithm
Band selection is an important data dimensionality reduction tool in hyperspectral images (HSIs). To identify the most informative subset band from the hundreds of highly corrected bands in HSIs, a novel hyperspectral band selection method using a crossover based gravitational search algorithm (CGSA) is presented in this paper. In this method, the discriminative capability of each band subset is evaluated by a combined optimization criterion, which is constructed based on the overall classification accuracy and the size of the band subset. As the evolution of the criterion, the subset is updated using the V-shaped transfer function based CGSA. Ultimately, the band subset with the best fitness value is selected. Experiments on two public hyperspectral datasets, i.e. the Indian Pines dataset and the Pavia University dataset, have been conducted to test the performance of the proposed method. Comparing experimental results against the basic GSA and the PSOGSA (hybrid PSO and GSA) revealed that all of the three GSA variants can considerably reduce the band dimensionality of HSIs without damaging their classification accuracy. Moreover, the CGSA shows superiority on both the effectiveness and efficiency compared to the other two GSA variants
Optimal Clustering Framework for Hyperspectral Band Selection
Band selection, by choosing a set of representative bands in hyperspectral
image (HSI), is an effective method to reduce the redundant information without
compromising the original contents. Recently, various unsupervised band
selection methods have been proposed, but most of them are based on
approximation algorithms which can only obtain suboptimal solutions toward a
specific objective function. This paper focuses on clustering-based band
selection, and proposes a new framework to solve the above dilemma, claiming
the following contributions: 1) An optimal clustering framework (OCF), which
can obtain the optimal clustering result for a particular form of objective
function under a reasonable constraint. 2) A rank on clusters strategy (RCS),
which provides an effective criterion to select bands on existing clustering
structure. 3) An automatic method to determine the number of the required
bands, which can better evaluate the distinctive information produced by
certain number of bands. In experiments, the proposed algorithm is compared to
some state-of-the-art competitors. According to the experimental results, the
proposed algorithm is robust and significantly outperform the other methods on
various data sets
Information Extraction Techniques in Hyperspectral Imaging Biomedical Applications
Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a technology able to measure information about the spectral reflectance or transmission of light from the surface. The spectral data, usually within the ultraviolet and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, provide information about the interaction between light and different materials within the image. This fact enables the identification of different materials based on such spectral information. In recent years, this technology is being actively explored for clinical applications. One of the most relevant challenges in medical HSI is the information extraction, where image processing methods are used to extract useful information for disease detection and diagnosis. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the information extraction techniques for HSI. First, we introduce the background of HSI, and the main motivations of its usage for medical applications. Second, we present information extraction techniques based on both light propagation models within tissue and machine learning approaches. Then, we survey the usage of such information extraction techniques in HSI biomedical research applications. Finally, we discuss the main advantages and disadvantages of the most commonly used image processing approaches and the current challenges in HSI information extraction techniques in clinical applications
A Survey on Evolutionary Computation for Computer Vision and Image Analysis: Past, Present, and Future Trends
Computer vision (CV) is a big and important field
in artificial intelligence covering a wide range of applications.
Image analysis is a major task in CV aiming to extract, analyse
and understand the visual content of images. However, imagerelated
tasks are very challenging due to many factors, e.g., high
variations across images, high dimensionality, domain expertise
requirement, and image distortions. Evolutionary computation
(EC) approaches have been widely used for image analysis with
significant achievement. However, there is no comprehensive
survey of existing EC approaches to image analysis. To fill
this gap, this paper provides a comprehensive survey covering
all essential EC approaches to important image analysis tasks
including edge detection, image segmentation, image feature
analysis, image classification, object detection, and others. This
survey aims to provide a better understanding of evolutionary
computer vision (ECV) by discussing the contributions of different
approaches and exploring how and why EC is used for
CV and image analysis. The applications, challenges, issues, and
trends associated to this research field are also discussed and
summarised to provide further guidelines and opportunities for
future research
