    Detection and Generalization of Spatio-temporal Trajectories for Motion Imagery

    In today\u27s world of vast information availability users often confront large unorganized amounts of data with limited tools for managing them. Motion imagery datasets have become increasingly popular means for exposing and disseminating information. Commonly, moving objects are of primary interest in modeling such datasets. Users may require different levels of detail mainly for visualization and further processing purposes according to the application at hand. In this thesis we exploit the geometric attributes of objects for dataset summarization by using a series of image processing and neural network tools. In order to form data summaries we select representative time instances through the segmentation of an object\u27s spatio-temporal trajectory lines. High movement variation instances are selected through a new hybrid self-organizing map (SOM) technique to describe a single spatio-temporal trajectory. Multiple objects move in diverse yet classifiable patterns. In order to group corresponding trajectories we utilize an abstraction mechanism that investigates a vague moving relevance between the data in space and time. Thus, we introduce the spatio-temporal neighborhood unit as a variable generalization surface. By altering the unit\u27s dimensions, scaled generalization is accomplished. Common complications in tracking applications that include occlusion, noise, information gaps and unconnected segments of data sequences are addressed through the hybrid-SOM analysis. Nevertheless, entangled data sequences where no information on which data entry belongs to each corresponding trajectory are frequently evident. A multidimensional classification technique that combines geometric and backpropagation neural network implementation is used to distinguish between trajectory data. Further more, modeling and summarization of two-dimensional phenomena evolving in time brings forward the novel concept of spatio-temporal helixes as compact event representations. The phenomena models are comprised of SOM movement nodes (spines) and cardinality shape-change descriptors (prongs). While we focus on the analysis of MI datasets, the framework can be generalized to function with other types of spatio-temporal datasets. Multiple scale generalization is allowed in a dynamic significance-based scale rather than a constant one. The constructed summaries are not just a visualization product but they support further processing for metadata creation, indexing, and querying. Experimentation, comparisons and error estimations for each technique support the analyses discussed

    Object Tracking in Distributed Video Networks Using Multi-Dimentional Signatures

    From being an expensive toy in the hands of governmental agencies, computers have evolved a long way from the huge vacuum tube-based machines to today\u27s small but more than thousand times powerful personal computers. Computers have long been investigated as the foundation for an artificial vision system. The computer vision discipline has seen a rapid development over the past few decades from rudimentary motion detection systems to complex modekbased object motion analyzing algorithms. Our work is one such improvement over previous algorithms developed for the purpose of object motion analysis in video feeds. Our work is based on the principle of multi-dimensional object signatures. Object signatures are constructed from individual attributes extracted through video processing. While past work has proceeded on similar lines, the lack of a comprehensive object definition model severely restricts the application of such algorithms to controlled situations. In conditions with varying external factors, such algorithms perform less efficiently due to inherent assumptions of constancy of attribute values. Our approach assumes a variable environment where the attribute values recorded of an object are deemed prone to variability. The variations in the accuracy in object attribute values has been addressed by incorporating weights for each attribute that vary according to local conditions at a sensor location. This ensures that attribute values with higher accuracy can be accorded more credibility in the object matching process. Variations in attribute values (such as surface color of the object) were also addressed by means of applying error corrections such as shadow elimination from the detected object profile. Experiments were conducted to verify our hypothesis. The results established the validity of our approach as higher matching accuracy was obtained with our multi-dimensional approach than with a single-attribute based comparison

    Mobile Map Browsers: Anticipated User Interaction for Data Pre-fetching

    When browsing a graphical display of geospatial data on mobile devices, users typically change the displayed maps by panning, zooming in and out, or rotating the device. Limited storage space on mobile devices and slow wireless communications, however, impede the performance of these operations. To overcome the bottleneck that all map data to be displayed on the mobile device need to be downloaded on demand, this thesis investigates how anticipated user interactions affect intelligent pre-fetching so that an on-demand download session is extended incrementally. User interaction is defined as a set of map operations that each have corresponding effects on the spatial dataset required to generate the display. By anticipating user interaction based on past behavior and intuition on when waiting for data is acceptable, it is possible to device a set of strategies to better prepare the device with data for future use. Users that engage with interactive map displays for a variety of tasks, whether it be navigation, information browsing, or data collection, experience a dynamic display to accomplish their goal. With vehicular navigation, the display might update itself as a result of a GPS data stream reflecting movement through space. This movement is not random, especially as is the case of moving vehicles and, therefore, this thesis suggests that mobile map data could be pre-fetched in order to improve usability. Pre-fetching memory-demanding spatial data can benefit usability in several ways, but in particular it can (1) reduce latency when downloading data over wireless connections and (2) better prepare a device for situations where wireless internet connectivity is weak or intermittent. This thesis investigates mobile map caching and devises an algorithm for pre-fetching data on behalf of the application user. Two primary models are compared: isotropic (direction-independent) and anisotropic (direction-dependent) pre-fetching. A prefetching simulation is parameterized with many trajectories that vary in complexity (a metric of direction change within the trajectory) and it is shown that, although anisotropic pre-fetching typically results in a better pre-fetching accuracy, it is not ideal for all scenarios. This thesis suggests a combination of models to accommodate the significant variation in moving object trajectories. In addition, other methods for pre-fetching spatial data are proposed for future research

    Yellow Tree: A Distributed Main-memory Spatial Index Structure for Moving Objects

    Mobile devices equipped with wireless technologies to communicate and positioning systems to locate objects of interest are common place today, providing the impetus to develop location-aware applications. At the heart of location-aware applications are moving objects or objects that continuously change location over time, such as cars in transportation networks or pedestrians or postal packages. Location-aware applications tend to support the tracking of very large numbers of such moving objects as well as many users that are interested in finding out about the locations of other moving objects. Such location-aware applications rely on support from database management systems to model, store, and query moving object data. The management of moving object data exposes the limitations of traditional (spatial) database management systems as well as their index structures designed to keep track of objects\u27 locations. Spatial index structures that have been designed for geographic objects in the past primarily assume data are foremost of static nature (e.g., land parcels, road networks, or airport locations), thus requiring a limited amount of index structure updates and reorganization over a period of time. While handling moving objects however, there is an incumbent need for continuous reorganization of spatial index structures to remain up to date with constantly and rapidly changing object locations. This research addresses some of the key issues surrounding the efficient database management of moving objects whose location update rate to the database system varies from 1 to 30 minutes. Furthermore, we address the design of a highly scaleable and efficient spatial index structure to support location tracking and querying of large amounts of moving objects. We explore the possible architectural and the data structure level changes that are required to handle large numbers of moving objects. We focus specifically on the index structures that are needed to process spatial range queries and object-based queries on constantly changing moving object data. We argue for the case of main memory spatial index structures that dynamically adapt to continuously changing moving object data and concurrently answer spatial range queries efficiently. A proof-of concept implementation called the yellow tree, which is a distributed main-memory index structure, and a simulated environment to generate moving objects is demonstrated. Using experiments conducted on simulated moving object data, we conclude that a distributed main-memory based spatial index structure is required to handle dynamic location updates and efficiently answer spatial range queries on moving objects. Future work on enhancing the query processing performance of yellow tree is also discussed

    Knowledge discovery from trajectories

However, there is, until now, no theoretical framework for researchers gaining a systematic view of the researches going on. The complexity of spatial and temporal information along with their combination is producing numerous spatio-temporal patterns. In addition, it is very probable that a pattern may have different definition and mining methodology for researchers from different background, such as Geographic Information Science, Data Mining, Database, and Computational Geometry. How to systematically define these patterns, so that the whole community can make better use of previous research? This paper is trying to tackle with this challenge by three steps. First, the input trajectory data is classified; second, taxonomy of spatio-temporal patterns is developed from data mining point of view; lastly, the spatio-temporal patterns appeared on the previous publications are discussed and put into the theoretical framework. In this way, researchers can easily find needed methodology to mining specific pattern in this framework; also the algorithms needing to be developed can be identified for further research. Under the guidance of this framework, an application to a real data set from Starkey Project is performed. Two questions are answers by applying data mining algorithms. First is where the elks would like to stay in the whole range, and the second is whether there are corridors among these regions of interest

    Vision application of human robot interaction: Development of a ping pong playing robotic arm

    Robotics is a science that is implemented parallel to human behavior. This work describes and implements techniques to mathematically model the game of ping pong played by the humans, and utilization of these methods in the design and development of a ping pong playing robotic arm as an application of robotic vision. Displaced frame difference (DFD) is used to segment the ball motion from background motion and parametric calibration of single CCD camera is utilized to track the ball in three dimensions. This visual information is temporally updated and further applied to guide a robot arm to hit the ball at a specified location in time. The results signify the system development based on single camera tracking and also demonstrate its working with self-sufficiency for the color of the ball. System latency is measured as a function of the camera interface, processor architecture, and robot motion. Various hardware and software parameters that influence the real time system performance are also discussed

    Toward a further understanding of object feature binding: a cognitive neuroscience perspective.

    The aim of this thesis is to lead to a further understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying object feature binding in the human brain. The focus is on information processing and integration in the visual system and visual shortterm memory. From a review of the literature it is clear that there are three major competing binding theories, however, none of these individually solves the binding problem satisfactorily. Thus the aim of this research is to conduct behavioural experimentation into object feature binding, paying particular attention to visual short-term memory. The behavioural experiment was designed and conducted using a within-subjects delayed responset ask comprising a battery of sixty-four composite objects each with three features and four dimensions in each of three conditions (spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal).Findings from the experiment,which focus on spatial and temporal aspects of object feature binding and feature proximity on binding errors, support the spatial theories on object feature binding, in addition we propose that temporal theories and convergence, through hierarchical feature analysis, are also involved. Because spatial properties have a dedicated processing neural stream, and temporal properties rely on limited capacity memory systems, memories for sequential information would likely be more difficult to accuratelyr ecall. Our study supports other studies which suggest that both spatial and temporal coherence to differing degrees,may be involved in object feature binding. Traditionally, these theories have purported to provide individual solutions, but this thesis proposes a novel unified theory of object feature binding in which hierarchical feature analysis, spatial attention and temporal synchrony each plays a role. It is further proposed that binding takes place in visual short-term memory through concerted and integrated information processing in distributed cortical areas. A cognitive model detailing this integrated proposal is given. Next, the cognitive model is used to inform the design and suggested implementation of a computational model which would be able to test the theory put forward in this thesis. In order to verify the model, future work is needed to implement the computational model.Thus it is argued that this doctoral thesis provides valuable experimental evidence concerning spatio-temporal aspects of the binding problem and as such is an additional building block in the quest for a solution to the object feature binding problem
