    Magnetic tape

    Get PDF
The move to visualization and image processing in data systems is increasing the demand for larger and faster mass storage systems. The technology of choice is magnetic tape. This paper briefly reviews the technology past, present, and projected. A case is made for standards and the value of the standards to users

    Get PDF
The proceedings of the National Space Science Data Center Conference on Mass Storage Systems and Technologies for Space and Earth Science Applications held July 23 through 25, 1991 at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center are presented. The program includes a keynote address, invited technical papers, and selected technical presentations to provide a broad forum for the discussion of a number of important issues in the field of mass storage systems. Topics include magnetic disk and tape technologies, optical disk and tape, software storage and file management systems, and experiences with the use of a large, distributed storage system. The technical presentations describe integrated mass storage systems that are expected to be available commercially. Also included is a series of presentations from Federal Government organizations and research institutions covering their mass storage requirements for the 1990's

A Peripheral Subsystem Optimized for Computer Image Generation Applications

    Get PDF
Requirements for ever increasing realism in real time computer image generation for military mission and commercial training, have generated the need for a higher performance, more cost effective front-end processor. Current computer image generators front-end general purpose computers are reaching their performance limits in current architectures. The tasks of this processor include: realtime computations, magnetic disk control, data transfer and direct memory access to and from the balance of the image generator. A new front-end processor system is under development. This multiple-bus, multiprocessor architecture in and of itself does not address disk and external data transfer. A peripheral subsystem is therefore researched to satisfy these requirements. Industry standard peripheral buses and protocols are evaluated. A peripheral subsystem, compatible with this new front-end processor architecture, is proposed. The Intelligent Peripheral Interface is selected as the optimum peripheral subsystem for computer image generation application. An abbreviated design specification for the proposed subsystem is presented. The subsystem performs magnetic disk control, data transfer and direct memory access to and from the balance of the computer image generator while not compromising front-end computational performance. It is capable of addressing new levels of performance. Several Intelligence Peripheral Interface issues, specific to this computer image generation application, are investigated

Data processing model for the CDF experiment

    Get PDF
The data processing model for the CDF experiment is described. Data processing reconstructs events from parallel data streams taken with different combinations of physics event triggers and further splits the events into datasets of specialized physics datasets. The design of the processing control system faces strict requirements on bookkeeping records, which trace the status of data files and event contents during processing and storage. The computing architecture was updated to meet the mass data flow of the Run II data collection, recently upgraded to a maximum rate of 40 MByte/sec. The data processing facility consists of a large cluster of Linux computers with data movement managed by the CDF data handling system to a multi-petaByte Enstore tape library. The latest processing cycle has achieved a stable speed of 35 MByte/sec (3 TByte/day). It can be readily scaled by increasing CPU and data-handling capacity as required.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, submitted to IEEE-TN

CloudJet4BigData: Streamlining Big Data via an Accelerated Socket Interface

    Get PDF
Big data needs to feed users with fresh processing results and cloud platforms can be used to speed up big data applications. This paper describes a new data communication protocol (CloudJet) for long distance and large volume big data accessing operations to alleviate the large latencies encountered in sharing big data resources in the clouds. It encapsulates a dynamic multi-stream/multi-path engine at the socket level, which conforms to Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) and thereby can accelerate any POSIX-compatible applications across IP based networks. It was demonstrated that CloudJet accelerates typical big data applications such as very large database (VLDB), data mining, media streaming and office applications by up to tenfold in real-world tests

How migrating 0.0001% of address space saves 12% of energy in hybrid storage

We present a simple, operating-\ud system independent method to reduce the num-\ud ber of seek operations and consequently reduce\ud the energy consumption of a hybrid storage\ud device consisting of a hard disk and a ïŹ‚ash\ud memory. Trace-driven simulations show that\ud migrating a tiny amount of the address space\ud (0.0001%) from disk to ïŹ‚ash already results\ud in a signiïŹcant storage energy reduction (12%)\ud at virtually no extra cost. We show that the\ud amount of energy saving depends on which part\ud of the address space is migrated, and we present\ud two indicators for this, namely sequentiality and\ud request frequency. Our simulations show that\ud both are suitable as criterion for energy-saving\ud ïŹle placement methods in hybrid storage. We\ud address potential wear problems in the ïŹ‚ash\ud subsystem by presenting a simple way to pro-\ud long its expected lifetime.\u
