V letech ca 1900–1915 došlo k prvnímu otevřenému a diskutovanému vrcholu v české recepci evolucionismu a před jednoznačnými pozicemi a „velkými teoriemi“ má navrch spíše prostředkování diferencované zahraniční diskuse, podněty vlastní experimentální práce a opatrné očekávání od nového studia variability a dědičnosti
Economics in Times of Crisis. In Search of a New Paradigm
JEL Codes: B41, B50The relationship between the development of economics and economic performance is not
reducible to any set of simple rules. Among the historians of economic thought there is even a handful
of those who perceive the progress in economics mostly as an outcome of the attempts to solve the
problems, inconsistencies and paradoxes within economic theory itself. Seen from this perspective,
economic reality has minor (or no) importance.
On the other hand, the endeavours to modify a mainstream approach are significantly greater in times
of economic downturns. Seeing that economics is in such a state of ‘intellectual ferment’ nowadays,
it is worth reconsidering the connection between economics and the economy. Thus the main aim
of the paper is to analyse the current state of economic science in relation to the last economic slump.
Although it is of course not possible to predict the future trajectories of economic theorising, taking
into consideration the nature of the crisis the most feasible and potentially most fruitful areas are
indicated
Conzenian Tradition in Polish Urban Historical Morphology
The scientific heritage of M. R. G. Conzen, who is considered one of the most outstanding historical geographers and urban morphologists in the world, has made a huge impact on the contemporary urban historic morphology. Nowadays it would be very hard to imagine this scientific discipline without his achievements. He created a new point of view on the city, first within the Anglo-Saxon, and afterwards within European and world geography. Morphogenetic methods, the conceptualisation of historic development, terminological precision as well as cartographic analysis that were typical of his approach, more and more often were considered essential for the development and the role of research on historic urban landscape. This resulted in the increasing interest in morphological studies on an international scale. In Poland, M. R. G. Conzen’s opinions have become recognizable since 1960, finding permanent place in urban historic morphology and providing stimuli for its significant development in the following decades
Turgenev’s appropriation of King Lear: A case of medieval transmission and adaptation
This paper tries to provide a thorough analysis of Ivan Turgenev’s appropriation of King
Lear, the Shakespearean tragedy, as it appears in the novella King Lear of the Steppes (1870),
from the perspective of translation and adaptation studies, and how this was adapted to 19th
-
century Russia. This analysis highlights the role of cross-cultural relations and its influence
on the evolution of target literatures. The comparison with Shakespeare’s source text shows
evident similarities but also differences, all of which raise multiple questions from the
perspective of philosophy, history and ideology, among others. In fact, the interpretation of
Shakespeare’s work, in Turgenev’s work and in the Russian literature as a whole, has become
essential to understand the intellectual development of this country since the 19th century, as
well as the rise of some debates about the Russian cultural identity, which still continue today.
By focusing on Turgenev’s novella King Lear of the Steppes, the relevance of processes such
as appropriation and adaptation for the development of national literatures will be
underscored and how these foster debate and discussion within cultural systems. And, in
order to illustrate this, it will also be highlighted that Shakespeare’s King Lear was in fact
based upon several previous medieval sources and suffered multiple changes and adaptations
over the centuries, which proves that knowledge transforms and adapts to the literary, cultural
and ideological features of each period of time and society
Consciousness Science Underdetermined: A short history of endless debates
Consciousness scientists have not reached consensus on two of the most central questions in their field: first, on whether consciousness overflows reportability; second, on the physical basis of consciousness. I review the scientific literature of the 19th century to provide evidence that disagreement on these questions has been a feature of the scientific study of consciousness for a long time. Based on this historical review, I hypothesize that a unifying explanation of disagreement on these questions, up to this day, is that scientific theories of consciousness are underdetermined by the evidence, namely, that they can be preserved “come what may” in front of (seemingly) disconfirming evidence. Consciousness scientists may have to find a way of solving the persistent underdetermination of theories of consciousness to make further progress
Managing the island territory : a historical perspective on sub-state nationalism in Corsica and Sardinia
Corsica (France) and Sardinia (Italy) are two islands of the western Mediterranean basin separated by a narrow strait. They share a problematic relationship with the mainland states to which they are associated, and from which they obtained their status of subnational island jurisdiction (SNIJ). The metropole/island relationship of these two islands is characterized by centrifugal tensions and the presence of sub-state nationalisms. These movements are different in terms of characteristics, strategies and electoral results, because of how France and Italy have managed the integration of the two islands, how the two island nationalisms have evolved, and how both metropolitan states have dealt with them. This article proposes a comparative history of Sardinian and Corsican nationalism and the relationship of Italy and France with these island territories. The intention is to analyse the two nationalisms, based almost exclusively on political science, with an historical perspective, highlighting the impact caused by the central states’ attitudes. In this way, the article points out how the differences between the political context of the two islands is defined by the different approach taken by France and Italy in managing their island territories.peer-reviewe
Studies in Mysticism and Mystical Experience in the Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia
The paper highlights the key perspectives on mysticism typical for Soviet and Post-Soviet religious studies. Recognizing the vagueness of the ”mystical’, Soviet scholars interpreted it as a belief in ”communication’ with ”supernatural powers’. Furthermore, ”mysticism’ was thought of as a multicomponent entity composed of mystical experiences, mystical beliefs, and ”mysticism’ as a ”false ideology’. Such an understanding resulted from their epistemological settings, i.e. the reflection theory of dialectical materialism. In this light, mystical experiences and beliefs were distorted ”reflections’ of objective reality in the human mind caused by factors both of an individual and a social nature. This understanding still defines the academic interpretations of the ”mystical’ in Russia today
Mathematical Abstraction, Conceptual Variation and Identity
One of the key features of modern mathematics is the adoption of the abstract method. Our goal in this paper is to propose an explication of that method that is rooted in the history of the subject
