    A single-machine scheduling problem with multiple unavailability constraints: A mathematical model and an enhanced variable neighborhood search approach

    AbstractThis research focuses on a scheduling problem with multiple unavailability periods and distinct due dates. The objective is to minimize the sum of maximum earliness and tardiness of jobs. In order to optimize the problem exactly a mathematical model is proposed. However due to computational difficulties for large instances of the considered problem a modified variable neighborhood search (VNS) is developed. In basic VNS, the searching process to achieve to global optimum or near global optimum solution is totally random, and it is known as one of the weaknesses of this algorithm. To tackle this weakness, a VNS algorithm is combined with a knowledge module. In the proposed VNS, knowledge module extracts the knowledge of good solution and save them in memory and feed it back to the algorithm during the search process. Computational results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient and effective

    Scheduling Single-Machine Problem Oriented by Just-In-Time Principles - A Case Study

    Developments in advanced autonomous production resources have increased the interest in the Single-Machine Scheduling Problem (SMSP). Until now, researchers used SMSP with little to no practical application in industry, but with the introduction of multi-purpose machines, able of executing an entire task, such as 3D Printers, replacing extensive production chains, single-machine problems are becoming a central point of interest in real-world scheduling. In this paper we study how simple, easy to implement, Just-in-Time (JIT) based, constructive heuristics, can be used to optimize customer and enterprise oriented performance measures.     Application of an evolutionary algorithm-based ensemble model to job-shop scheduling

    In this paper, a novel evolutionary algorithm is applied to tackle job-shop scheduling tasks in manufacturing environments. Specifically, a modified micro genetic algorithm (MmGA) is used as the building block to formulate an ensemble model to undertake multi-objective optimisation problems in job-shop scheduling. The MmGA ensemble is able to approximate the optimal solution under the Pareto optimality principle. To evaluate the effectiveness of the MmGA ensemble, a case study based on real requirements is conducted. The results positively indicate the effectiveness of the MmGA ensemble in undertaking job-shop scheduling problems

    Here we have n jobs on one machine where the processing times are triangular fuzzy numbers. The jobs are available to process without interruption. The purpose is to find a best sequence of the jobs that minimizes total fuzzy completion times and maximum fuzzy tardiness. In this paper a new definition is presented called D-strongly positive fuzzy number, then an exact solution of the problem through this definition is found. This definition opens new ideas about converting scheduling problems into fuzzy cases

    Non-Reshuffle-Based Approach for Rescheduling of Flexible Manufacturing System

    Scheduling and rescheduling play vital roles in ensuring the effectiveness of the production control in flexible manufacturing system (FMS).  The failure of these systems may interrupt the efficiency of the production activities and thus may lessen the profit to be gained by the company. The FMS scheduling problem is considered as dynamic as new orders may get in every day. The new orders need to be immediately desegregated with the existing production schedule by preserving the efficiency and stability of the existing schedule. This research applies the non-reshuffle-based genetic match-up algorithms which admit new orders by manipulating available machine idle times to address rescheduling problem in a FMS that practises the pull strategy. The idea of the match-up approach is to update only a part of the initial schedule and genetic algorithms used to optimise the solution within the rescheduling horizon in such a way in order to preserve the efficiency and stability of the shop floor. The proposed methodology has been tested using different rescheduling parameters. The experiments show that the rescheduling method improves efficiency and stability of the new schedule

    Improving just-in-time delivery performance of IoT-enabled flexible manufacturing systems with AGV based material transportation

    Autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) are driverless material handling systems used for transportation of pallets and line side supply of materials to provide flexibility and agility in shop-floor logistics. Scheduling of shop-floor logistics in such systems is a challenging task due to their complex nature associated with the multiple part types and alternate material transfer routings. This paper presents a decision support system capable of supporting shop-floor decision-making activities during the event of manufacturing disruptions by automatically adjusting both AGV and machine schedules in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs). The proposed system uses discrete event simulation (DES) models enhanced by the Internet-of-Things (IoT) enabled digital integration and employs a nonlinear mixed integer programming Genetic Algorithm (GA) to find near-optimal production schedules prioritising the just-in-time (JIT) material delivery performance and energy efficiency of the material transportation. The performance of the proposed system is tested on the Integrated Manufacturing and Logistics (IML) demonstrator at WMG, University of Warwick. The results showed that the developed system can find the near-optimal solutions for production schedules subjected to production anomalies in a negligible time, thereby supporting shop-floor decision-making activities effectively and rapidly

For couple of decades, hundreds of studies are done on integrated process planning and scheduling problems and numerous researches are performed on scheduling with due date assignment problem, but unfortunately the integration of these three important functions are not adequately addressed. Here, the integration of these three important functions is studied by using genetic, random-genetic hybrid, simulated annealing, random-simulated annealing hybrid and random search techniques.
