See you on Facebook: the effect of social networking on human interaction

This paper proposes an evolutionary framework to explore the dynamics of social interaction in an environment characterized by online networking and increasing pressure on time. The model shows how time pressure encourages the choice to develop social interactions also through online networking instead of relying exclusively on face to face encounters. Our findings suggest that the joint influence exerted by the reduction in leisure time and the new opportunities of participation offered by web-mediated communication may progressively lead a growing share of the population to adopt networking sites as an indispensable environment for the development of interpersonal relationships.internet, computer-mediated communication, social networking, online networks, Facebook, human interaction, social capital

In the new edition of one of the key methods texts in childhood research – Research with children: Perspectives and practices, edited by Pia Christensen and Allison James – Sonia Livingstone and Alicia Blum-Ross argue that paying attention to the digital reveals a lot about children’s identities and relationships. The previous 2008 edition barely mentioned mobile phones, social networking, online identities or digital games, with researchers implicitly prioritising face-to-face interaction. Yet as children now play, learn, create and interact within digital environments, this raises new ethical and methodological challenges and opportunities for researchers

Artist Ranking Through Analysis of On-line Community Comments

We describe an approach to measure the popularity of music tracks, albums and artists by analyzing the comments of music listeners in social networking online communities such as MySpace. This measure of popularity appears to be more accurate than the traditional measure based on album sales figures, as demonstrated by our focus group study. We faced many challenges in our attempt to generate a popularity ranking from the user comments on social networking sites, e.g., broken English sentences, comment spam, etc. We discuss the steps we took to overcome these challenges and describe an end to end system for generating a new popularity measure based on online comments, and the experiments performed to evaluate its success

With the rapid progress of the Internet and easy access to social networking, online communication has become the common occurrence of netizens, hence the spring-up of Internet neologisms. These new expressions mirror emerging phenomena, fresh changes and trending fashions in all aspects of social life as well as play an increasingly important role in social media and people’s daily life. Internet neologisms are full of profound social and cultural connotations, which renders it necessary to make an inquiry into the workings of Chinese Internet neologism (CIN). This paper is designed to make it clear what CIN is, how it is classified, and what are the features and social connotations underlying the seemingly bantering lingoes of CIN
