    Constructing an understanding of mind : the development of children's social understanding within social interaction

    Theories of children's developing understanding of mind tend to emphasize either individualistic processes of theory formation, maturation, or introspection, or the process of enculturation. However, such theories must be able to account for the accumulating evidence of the role of social interaction in the development of social understanding. We propose an alternative account, according to which the development of children's social understanding occurs within triadic interaction involving the child's experience of the world as well as communicative interaction with others about their experience and beliefs (Chapman 1991; 1999). It is through such triadic interaction that children gradually construct knowledge of the world as well as knowledge of other people. We contend that the extent and nature of the social interaction children experience will influence the development of children's social understanding. Increased opportunity to engage in cooperative social interaction and exposure to talk about mental states should facilitate the development of social understanding. We review evidence suggesting that children's understanding of mind develops gradually in the context of social interaction. Therefore, we need a theory of development in this area that accords a fundamental role to social interaction, yet does not assume that children simply adopt socially available knowledge but rather that children construct an understanding of mind within social interaction

    How can robots facilitate social interaction of children with autism?: Possible implications for educational environments

    Children with autism have difficulties in social interaction with other people and much attention in recent years has been directed to robots as therapy tools. We studied the social interaction between children with autism and robots longitudinally to observe developmental changes in their performance. We observed children at a special school for six months and analyzed their performance with robots. The results showed that two children adapted to the experimental situations and developed interaction with the robots. This suggests that they changed their interaction with the robots from an object-like one into an agentlike one

    Social Interaction and Intergenerational Skill Transfer

    We explore the relationship between educational attainment and social interaction using individual level data from the British National Child Development Study. To be specific, we analyze whether an intergenerational aspect to this relationship exists by examining the relationship between the educational attainment of children and the degree of formal social activity undertaken by their parents. In accordance with the existing literature, our results support a positive association between education and social interaction. Furthermore, our results suggest that children´s scores in reading, mathematics and vocabulary tests are positively associated with the extent of their parents´ formal social interaction. This relationship is robust to controlling for the degree of intra-family based social interaction and the social activities of the child

    Attitudes of Children with Autism towards Robots: An Exploratory Study

    In this exploratory study we assessed how attitudes of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) towards robots together with children's autism-related social impairments are linked to indicators of children's preference of an interaction with a robot over an interaction with a person. We found that children with ASD have overall positive attitudes towards robots and that they often prefer interacting with a robot than with a person. Several of children's attitudes were linked to children's longer gazes towards a robot compared to a person. Autism-related social impairments were linked to more repetitive and stereotyped behaviors and to a shorter gaze duration in the interaction with the robot compared to the person. These preliminary results contribute to better understand factors that might help determine sub-groups of children with ASD for whom robots could be particularly useful.Comment: Presented at Interaction Design and Children (IDC-CRI2018) Workshop (arXiv:submit/2277826

    User-driven design of robot costume for child-robot interactions among children with cognitive impairment

    The involvement of arts and psychology elements in robotics research for children with cognitive impairment is still limited. However, the combination of robots, arts, psychology and education in the development of robots could significantly contribute to the improvement of social interaction skills among children with cognitive impairment. In this article, we would like to share our work on building and innovating the costume of LUCA's robot, which incorporating the positive psychological perspectives and arts values for children with cognitive impairment. Our goals are (1) to educate arts students in secondary arts school on the importance of social robot appearance for children with cognitive impairment, and (2) to select the best costume for future child-robot interaction study with children with cognitive impairments

    Communication Library Mechanisms for Children’s Social Integration

    The article deals with communicative mechanisms of social interaction between libraries and different population categories. In conditions of information society, crisis situations, and war conflicts libraries should not only be supported by society but also to reintegrate into social life. Legislative instruments that regulate the work of libraries for children and determine its place in society were analyzed. The information about sociocultural, educational and informational functions of libraries much broader on the current conditions than set by legislation have been considered. The study finds that libraries for children work with different categories of young people including relocates, children with limited health capacities, teach finance and computer basics, develop creative talents and provide psychological help for parents. The paper presents an idea that libraries are not only limited to leisure activity institutions but have an important role in the process of socialization. The article deals with mechanism of library interaction with young people, particularly social partnership. Based on the research of sites and blogs of regional children’s libraries, the National Library of Ukraine for children, the main mechanisms of communication for social integration of young people into public and social life were determined

    Abstract Taking care pattern of parents influenced so much the children’s development, one of them was the development in social interaction ability. One of the autism children’s disorders was disorder in social interaction. Therefore, to optimize the development of social interaction ability autism children the taking care pattern of parents which was suitable with the children’s needs was highly required. Based on this, the researcher did the research of taking care and social interaction of autism children. The purpose of this research was to describe the parents’ taking care pattern, social interaction of autism children, and the relationship between the parents’ taking care pattern and social interaction of autism children in SMPN 4 Sidoarjo. In this research the researcher used qualitative approach with descriptive kind of research. The research subject was autism children in SMPN 4 Sidoarjo numbering 4 children. The data collection method used observation and interview, and the technique of data validation used data triangulation. The research result indicated that parents’ taking care pattern of autism children in SMPN 4 Sidoarjo was two of four parents authoritative tendency whereas one was authoritarian tendency and another one was permissive tendency. The social interactive of autism children in SMPN 4 Sidoarjo from four autism children was two children had good social interaction and two others had enough social interaction. The conclusion of this research was that the autism children’s tendency with authoritative tendency taking care pattern had good social interaction whereas the autism children’s tendency with permissive and authoritarian tendencies taking pattern had enough social interaction.   Keywords: Taking care pattern, social interactio

    Emotionality, emotion regulation and preschooler’s social adaptation.

    It was proposed that the interaction between the constructs of emotion regulation and social interaction would predict social adaptation in preschoolers. Ninety-six 4-year-olds were observed in quartets of unfamiliar same-sex peers. Based on parent temperament ratings and observed free play behaviors, 68 children from the original sample were classified as: low social interaction, good emotion regulators; low social interaction, poor emotion regulators; high social interaction, good emotion regulators; high social interaction, poor emotion regulators; or average. The results indicated that the low social interaction children who were poor regulators displayed more wary and anxious behaviors during free play and other episodes, and were rated as having more internalizing problems than both the low social interaction children who were good regulators and the average group. The high social interaction children who were poor regulators were rated as having more externalizing problems than either the high social interaction children who were good regulators or the average group. Thus, it seems as if emotion dysregulation is associated with psychological maladaptation, but that this association is tempered by the degree to which children engage in social interaction
