DizertačnĂ­ prĂĄce pƙinĂĄĆĄĂ­ pƙehled zĂĄkladnĂ­ch metod pouĆŸitelnĂœch pro Ășčely predikce zbĂœvajĂ­cĂ­ uĆŸitnĂ© ĆŸivotnosti, jsou zde popsĂĄny metriky pomocĂ­, kterĂœch je moĆŸnĂ© jednotlivĂ© pƙístupy porovnĂĄvat aĆ„ uĆŸ z pohledu pƙesnosti, ale takĂ© i z pohledu vĂœpočetnĂ­ nĂĄročnosti. Jedno z dizertačnĂ­ch jader tvoƙí doporučenĂ­ a postup pro vĂœběr vhodnĂ© prognostickĂ© metody s ohledem na prognostickĂĄ kritĂ©ria. DalĆĄĂ­m dizertačnĂ­m jĂĄdrem je pƙedstavenĂ­ tzv. částicovĂ©ho filtrovanĂ­ (particle filtering) vhodnĂ© pro model-based prognostiku s ověƙenĂ­m jejich implementace a porovnĂĄnĂ­m. HlavnĂ­ dizertačnĂ­ jĂĄdro reprezentuje pƙípadovou studii pro velmi aktuĂĄlnĂ­ tĂ©ma prognostiky Li-Ion baterii s ohledem na trvalĂ© monitorovĂĄnĂ­. PƙípadovĂĄ studie demonstruje proces prognostiky zaloĆŸenĂ© na modelu a srovnĂĄvĂĄ moĆŸnĂ© pƙístupy jednak pro odhad doby pƙed vybitĂ­m baterie, ale takĂ© sleduje moĆŸnĂ© vlivy na degradaci baterie. SoučástĂ­ prĂĄce je zĂĄkladnĂ­ ověƙenĂ­ modelu Li-Ion baterie a nĂĄvrh prognostickĂ©ho procesu.The main aim of the thesis is to provide a comprehensive overview of technical prognosis, which is applied in the condition based maintenance, based on continuous device monitoring and remaining useful life estimation, especially in the field of complex equipment and machinery. Nowadays technical prognosis is still evolving discipline with limited number of real applications and is not so well developed as technical diagnostics, which is fairly well mapped and deployed in real systems. Thesis provides an overview of basic methods applicable for prediction of remaining useful life, metrics, which can help to compare the different approaches both in terms of accuracy and in terms of computational/deployment cost. One of the research cores consists of recommendations and guide for selecting the appropriate forecasting method with regard to the prognostic criteria. Second thesis research core provides description and applicability of particle filtering framework suitable for model-based forecasting. Verification of their implementation and comparison is provided. The main research topic of the thesis provides a case study for a very actual Li-Ion battery health monitoring and prognostics with respect to continuous monitoring. The case study demonstrates the prognostic process based on the model and compares the possible approaches for estimating both the runtime and capacity fade. Proposed methodology is verified on real measured data.

    Distributed MPC for coordinated energy efficiency utilization in microgrid systems

    To improve the renewable energy utilization of distributed microgrid systems, this paper presents an optimal distributed model predictive control strategy to coordinate energy management among microgrid systems. In particular, through information exchange among systems, each microgrid in the network, which includes renewable generation, storage systems, and some controllable loads, can maintain its own systemwide supply and demand balance. With our mechanism, the closed-loop stability of the distributed microgrid systems can be guaranteed. In addition, we provide evaluation criteria of renewable energy utilization to validate our proposed method. Simulations show that the supply demand balance in each microgrid is achieved while, at the same time, the system operation cost is reduced, which demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed policy.Accepted manuscrip

    A first Experimental Investigation of the Practical Efficiency of Battery Scheduling

    Nowadays, mobile devices are used more and more, and their battery lifetime is a key concern. In this paper, we concentrate on a method called battery scheduling with the aim to optimize the battery lifetime of mobile devices. This technique has already been largely theoretically studied in other papers. It consists, for systems containing multiple batteries, in switching the load from one battery to the other. Then, while following a given scheduling sequence, advantage can be taken from the recovery and rate capacity effects. However, little studies with experimental data of battery scheduling have been found. In this paper we describe a simple setup for measuring the possible gain of battery scheduling, and give some exploratory results for two types of real batteries: a smart Li-Ion battery used in the Thales personal communication system and a more commonly used NiCd battery. The results, so far, show that system lifetime extension is not systematic, and generally can only reach less then 10%

    Battery choice and management for New Generation Electric Vehicles

    Different types of electric vehicles (EVs) have been recently designed with the aim of solving pollution problems caused by the emission of gasoline-powered engines. Environmental problems promote the adoption of new-generation electric vehicles for urban transportation. As it is well known, one of the weakest points of electric vehicles is the battery system. Vehicle autonomy and, therefore, accurate detection of battery state of charge (SoC) together with battery expected life, i.e., battery state of health, are among the major drawbacks that prevent the introduction of electric vehicles in the consumer market. The electric scooter may provide the most feasible opportunity among EVs. They may be a replacement product for the primary-use vehicle, especially in Europe and Asia, provided that drive performance, safety, and cost issues are similar to actual engine scooters. The battery system choice is a crucial item, and thanks to an increasing emphasis on vehicle range and performance, the Li-ion battery could become a viable candidate. This paper deals with the design of a battery pack based on Li-ion technology for a prototype electric scooter with high performance and autonomy. The adopted battery system is composed of a suitable number of cells series connected, featuring a high voltage level. Therefore, cell equalization and monitoring need to be provided. Due to manufacturing asymmetries, charge and discharge cycles lead to cell unbalancing, reducing battery capacity and, depending on cell type, causing safety troubles or strongly limiting the storage capacity of the full pack. No solution is available on the market at a cheap price, because of the required voltage level and performance, therefore, a dedicated battery management system was designed, that also includes a battery SoC monitoring. The proposed solution features a high capability of energy storing in braking conditions, charge equalization, overvoltage and undervoltage protection and, obviously, SoC information in order to optimize autonomy instead of performance or vice-versa

    The energy consumption from the expanding use of information and communications technology (ICT) is unsustainable with present drivers, and it will impact heavily on the future climate change. However, ICT devices have the potential to contribute signi - cantly to the reduction of CO2 emission and enhance resource e ciency in other sectors, e.g., transportation (through intelligent transportation and advanced driver assistance systems and self-driving vehicles), heating (through smart building control), and manu- facturing (through digital automation based on smart autonomous sensors). To address the energy sustainability of ICT and capture the full potential of ICT in resource e - ciency, a multidisciplinary ICT-energy community needs to be brought together cover- ing devices, microarchitectures, ultra large-scale integration (ULSI), high-performance computing (HPC), energy harvesting, energy storage, system design, embedded sys- tems, e cient electronics, static analysis, and computation.     A novel mechanical analogy based battery model for SoC estimation using a multi-cell EKF

    The future evolution of technological systems dedicated to improve energy efficiency will strongly depend on effective and reliable Energy Storage Systems, as key components for Smart Grids, microgrids and electric mobility. Besides possible improvements in chemical materials and cells design, the Battery Management System is the most important electronic device that improves the reliability of a battery pack. In fact, a precise State of Charge (SoC) estimation allows the energy flows controller to exploit better the full capacity of each cell. In this paper, we propose an alternative definition for the SoC, explaining the rationales by a mechanical analogy. We introduce a novel cell model, conceived as a series of three electric dipoles, together with a procedure for parameters estimation relying only on voltage measures and a given current profile. The three dipoles represent the quasi-stationary, the dynamics and the istantaneous components of voltage measures. An Extended Kalman Filer (EKF) is adopted as a nonlinear state estimator. Moreover, we propose a multi-cell EKF system based on a round-robin approach to allow the same processing block to keep track of many cells at the same time. Performance tests with a prototype battery pack composed by 18 A123 cells connected in series show encouraging results.Comment: 8 page, 12 figures, 1 tabl

    Smart grid architecture for rural distribution networks: application to a Spanish pilot network

    This paper presents a novel architecture for rural distribution grids. This architecture is designed to modernize traditional rural networks into new Smart Grid ones. The architecture tackles innovation actions on both the power plane and the management plane of the system. In the power plane, the architecture focuses on exploiting the synergies between telecommunications and innovative technologies based on power electronics managing low scale electrical storage. In the management plane, a decentralized management system is proposed based on the addition of two new agents assisting the typical Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system of distribution system operators. Altogether, the proposed architecture enables operators to use more effectively—in an automated and decentralized way—weak rural distribution systems, increasing the capability to integrate new distributed energy resources. This architecture is being implemented in a real Pilot Network located in Spain, in the frame of the European Smart Rural Grid project. The paper also includes a study case showing one of the potentialities of one of the principal technologies developed in the project and underpinning the realization of the new architecture: the so-called Intelligent Distribution Power Router.Postprint (published version
