__Abstract__ Accurate diagnosis of young children’s problem behavior is of great importance for understanding the early development of psychopathology and for early and effective interventions. Children, even young children, may offer a valuable complement to information from the traditional adult informants. Yet, in the Netherlands, no validated instrument was available to systematically assess young children’s perspective on their feelings and behavior. To address this gap, the Berkeley Puppet Interview (BPI) was translated into Dutch and introduced in the Generation R Study, a large epidemiological study. The series of studies described in this thesis examined whether information about emotional, behavioral and peer relationship problems, obtained by the Dutch translation of the BPI, provides reliable, valid and valuable information that can be used in research settings. The studies also examined the value of young children’s reports if implemented along with other outcomes in a multi-informant approach

Defectors cannot be detected during"small talk" with strangers.

To account for the widespread human tendency to cooperate in one-shot social dilemmas, some theorists have proposed that cooperators can be reliably detected based on ethological displays that are difficult to fake. Experimental findings have supported the view that cooperators can be distinguished from defectors based on "thin slices" of behavior, but the relevant cues have remained elusive, and the role of the judge's perspective remains unclear. In this study, we followed triadic conversations among unacquainted same-sex college students with unannounced dyadic one-shot prisoner's dilemmas, and asked participants to guess the PD decisions made toward them and among the other two participants. Two other sets of participants guessed the PD decisions after viewing videotape of the conversations, either with foreknowledge (informed), or without foreknowledge (naĂŻve), of the post-conversation PD. Only naĂŻve video viewers approached better-than-chance prediction accuracy, and they were significantly accurate at predicting the PD decisions of only opposite-sexed conversation participants. Four ethological displays recently proposed to cue defection in one-shot social dilemmas (arms crossed, lean back, hand touch, and face touch) failed to predict either actual defection or guesses of defection by any category of observer. Our results cast doubt on the role of "greenbeard" signals in the evolution of human prosociality, although they suggest that eavesdropping may be more informative about others' cooperative propensities than direct interaction

This is a collection of stories involving the everyday lives of Indians (from India) trying to cope with the disorientation of being where they are physically: the United States of America. By exploring different characters in difficult and/or unavoidable situations, this collection portrays not only the range of conflicts one might experience being the "other" in society, but also the range of story-telling by experimenting with structure, form, voice and language

Just Making Small Talk?: A Fresh Look Inside Mundane Conversation

What is small talk, and why is it important for human relationships? Small talk is sometimes perceived as marginal to actual conversations: perfunctory, mundane, and inconsequential. Based on six weeks of observation at a local breakfast joint, this study reveals how “small talk” took on a much deeper importance to a group of elderly men who gathered for coffee each day. I found that small talk, though produced in brief, often chopped up segments, was the main focus in conversations. And while discussion around small talk seldom becomes intimate or reciprocated, discussions are unique in the fact that interruptions and group additions fail to hinder them from continuing in later discussion. Small talk exhibits a Start/Interrupt/Resume Structure which allows periodic interruption with little to no effect on the topic’s continuation. While groups met weekly, intimacy was rarely reached in discussion. I attributed this to two reasons: lack of reciprocation within the group, and desire to remain comfortable
