    Autonomous Flight, Fault, and Energy Management of the Flying Fish Solar-Powered Seaplane.

    The Flying Fish autonomous unmanned seaplane is designed and built for persistent ocean surveillance. Solar energy harvesting and always-on autonomous control and guidance are required to achieve unattended long-term operation. This thesis describes the Flying Fish avionics and software systems that enable the system to plan, self-initiate, and autonomously execute drift-flight cycles necessary to maintain a designated watch circle subject to environmentally influenced drift. We first present the avionics and flight software architecture developed for the unique challenges of an autonomous energy-harvesting seaplane requiring the system to be: waterproof, robust over a variety of sea states, and lightweight for flight. Seaplane kinematics and dynamics are developed based on conventional aircraft and watercraft and upon empirical flight test data. These models serve as the basis for development of flight control and guidance strategies which take the form of a cyclic multi-mode guidance protocol that smoothly transitions between nested gain-scheduled proportional-derivative feedback control laws tuned for the trim conditions of each flight mode. A fault-tolerant airspeed sensing system is developed in response to elevated failure rates arising from pitot probe water ingestion in the test environment. The fault-tolerance strategy utilizes sensor characteristics and signal energy to combine redundant sensor measurements in a weighted voting strategy, handling repeated failures, sensor recovery, non-homogenous sensors, and periods of complete sensing failure. Finally, a graph-based mission planner combines models of global solar energy, local ocean-currents, and wind with flight-verified/derived aircraft models to provide an energy-aware flight planning tool. An NP-hard asymmetric multi-visit traveling salesman planning problem is posed that integrates vehicle performance and environment models using energy as the primary cost metric. A novel A* search heuristic is presented to improve search efficiency relative to uniform cost search. A series of cases studies are conducted with surface and airborne goals for various times of day and for multi-day scenarios. Energy-optimal solutions are identified except in cases where energy harvesting produces multiple comparable-cost plans via negative-cost cycles. Articles 1–8 are devoted to the developments of drone design, where new concepts and modeling strategies as well as effective designs that improve drone stability and autonomy are introduced.     Fixed-wing UAV tracking of evasive targets in 3-dimensional space

    In this thesis, we explore the development of autonomous tracking and interception strategies for single and multiple fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) pursuing single or multiple evasive targets in 3-dimensional (3D) space. We considered a scenario where we intend to protect high-value facilities from adversarial groups employing ground-based vehicles and quadrotor swarms and focused on solving the target tracking problem. Accordingly, we refined a min-max optimal control algorithm for fixed-wing UAVs tracking ground-based targets, by introducing constraints on bank angles and turn rates to enhance actuator reliability when pursuing agile and evasive targets. An intelligent and persistent evasive control strategy for the target was also devised to ensure robust performance testing and optimisation. These strategies were extended to 3D space, incorporating three altitude control algorithms to facilitate flexible UAV altitude control, leveraging various parameters such as desired UAV altitude and image size on the tracking camera lens. A novel evasive quadrotor algorithm was introduced, systematically testing UAV tracking efficacy against various evasive scenarios while implementing anti-collision measures to ensure UAV safety and adaptive optimisation improve the achieved performance. Using decentralised control strategies, cooperative tracking by multiple UAVs of single evasive quadrotor-type and dynamic target clusters was developed along with a new altitude control strategy and task assignment logic for efficient target interception. Lastly, a countermeasure strategy for tracking and neutralising non-cooperative adversarial targets within restricted airspace was implemented, using both Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) and optimal controllers. The major contributions of this thesis include optimal control strategies, evasive target control, 3D target tracking, altitude control, cooperative multi-UAV tracking, adaptive optimisation, high-precision projectile algorithms, and countermeasures. We envision practical applications of the findings from this research in surveillance, security, search and rescue, agriculture, environmental monitoring, drone defence, and autonomous delivery systems. Future efforts to extend this research could explore adaptive evasion, enhanced collaborative UAV swarms, machine learning integration, sensor technologies, and real-world testing

    Autonomous system control in unknown operating conditions

    Autonomous systems have become an interconnected part of everyday life with the recent increases in computational power available for both onboard computers and offline data processing. The race by car manufacturers for level 5 (full) autonomy in self-driving cars is well underway and new flying taxi service startups are emerging every week, attracting billions in investments. Two main research communities, Optimal Control and Reinforcement Learning stand out in the field of autonomous systems, each with a vastly different perspective on the control problem. Controllers from the optimal control community are based on models and can be rigorously analyzed to ensure the stability of the system is maintained under certain operating conditions. Learning-based control strategies are often referred to as model-free and typically involve training a neural network to generate the required control actions through direct interactions with the system. This greatly reduces the design effort required to control complex systems. One common problem both learning- and model- based control solutions face is the dependency on a priori knowledge about the system and operating conditions such as possible internal component failures and external environmental disturbances. It is not possible to consider every possible operating scenario an autonomous system can encounter in the real world at design time. Models and simulators are approximations of reality and can only be created for known operating conditions. Autonomous system control in unknown operating conditions, where no a priori knowledge exists, is still an open problem for both communities and no control methods currently exist for such situations. Multiple model adaptive control is a modular control framework that divides the control problem into supervisory and low-level control, which allows for the combination of existing learning- and model-based control methods to overcome the disadvantages of using only one of these. The contributions of this thesis consist of five novel supervisory control architectures, which have been empirically shown to improve a system’s robustness to unknown operating conditions, and a novel low- level controller tuning algorithm that can reduce the number of required controllers compared to traditional tuning approaches. The presented methods apply to any autonomous system that can be controlled using model-based controllers and can be integrated alongside existing fault-tolerant control systems to improve robustness to unknown operating conditions. This impacts autonomous system designers by providing novel control mechanisms to improve a system’s robustness to unknown operating conditions
