Discrete stochastic models for traffic flow
We investigate a probabilistic cellular automaton model which has been
introduced recently. This model describes single-lane traffic flow on a ring
and generalizes the asymmetric exclusion process models. We study the
equilibrium properties and calculate the so-called fundamental diagrams (flow
vs.\ density) for parallel dynamics. This is done numerically by computer
simulations of the model and by means of an improved mean-field approximation
which takes into account short-range correlations. For cars with maximum
velocity 1 the simplest non-trivial approximation gives the exact result. For
higher velocities the analytical results, obtained by iterated application of
the approximation scheme, are in excellent agreement with the numerical
simulations.Comment: Revtex, 30 pages, full postscript version (including figures)

Optimization of Green-Times at an Isolated Urban Crossroads
We propose a model for the intersection of two urban streets. The traffic
status of the crossroads is controlled by a set of traffic lights which
periodically switch to red and green with a total period of T. Two different
types of crossroads are discussed. The first one describes the intersection of
two one-way streets, while the second type models the intersection of a two-way
street with an one-way street. We assume that the vehicles approach the
crossroads with constant rates in time which are taken as the model parameters.
We optimize the traffic flow at the crossroads by minimizing the total waiting
time of the vehicles per cycle of the traffic light. This leads to the
determination of the optimum green-time allocated to each phase.Comment: 8 pages, 6 eps figures, more explanation added. To appear in EPJ
Two Lane Traffic Simulations using Cellular Automata
We examine a simple two lane cellular automaton based upon the single lane CA
introduced by Nagel and Schreckenberg. We point out important parameters
defining the shape of the fundamental diagram. Moreover we investigate the
importance of stochastic elements with respect to real life traffic.Comment: to be published in Physica A, 19 pages, 9 out of 13 postscript

Simulation and optimization of Cologne's tram schedule
In many tram networks multiple lines share tracks and stations, thus requiring robust schedules which prevent inevitable delays from spreading through the network. Feasible schedules also have to fulfill various planning requirements originating from political and economical reasons. In this article we present a tool set designed to generate schedules optimized for robustness, which also satisfy given sets of planning requirements. These tools allow us to compare time tables with respect to their applicability and evaluate them prior to their implementation in the field. This paper begins with a description of the tool set focusing on optimization and simulation modules. These software utilities are then employed to generate schedules for our hometown Cologne's tram network, and to subsequently compare them for their applicability
