Computer experiment - a case study for modelling and simulation of manufacturing systems

    Get PDF
Deterministic computer simulation of physical experiments is now a common technique in science and engineering. Often, physical experiments are too time consuming, expensive or impossible to conduct. Complex computer models or codes, rather than physical experiments lead to the study of computer experiments, which are used to investigate many scientific phenomena. A computer experiment consists of a number of runs of the computer code with different input choices. The Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments is a rapidly growing technique in statistical experimental design. This paper aims to discuss some practical issues when designing a computer simulation and/or experiments for manufacturing systems. A case study approach is reviewed and presented

Modeling and Simulation of Manufacturing Systems Under Signal Kanban Policies

    Get PDF
A signal kanban system is used to order the production of various parts by processes with lengthy setup times, such as in metal stamping or injection molding. In this paper, we explore the behavior of signal kanban systems using simulations of systems producing two part types. Such simple models allows a visualization of the changes in the inventories of these parts under the signal kanban system. We consider the operation of the common fixed-batch signal kanban system, and a variation that we refer to as a fixed-fill policy. These policies are investigated under variations in demand, occasional disruptions in production, and modifications in policy parameters. Our investigations for this two-partproduction model indicate that a fixed-fill signal kanban system is significantly more robust than the more common fixed-batch kanban system

Production planning and scheduling are critical in matters of cost reduction and performance improvement, crucial factors due to the highly competitive nature of today's industry. The technological development allowed the emergence of hybrid methods of optimization and simulation to perform the referred actions with better results. The proposed method consists in the interaction between a Linear Programming model and a simulation model, being the latter used as an evaluator of the solution proposed by the first. In the case of an impossible solution, the simulation results will serve as input to the LP model to adjust some parameters in an intent to produce more realistic results. The proposed methodology was applied to a case study concerning a make-to-order company, JPM IndĂşstria. The expected results should prove the proposed method to outperform other commonly used methods, and be satisfactory in handling the case study's problems, namely its bottleneck situation. Moreover, the results should support the proposed method as a viable alternative for production planning and scheduling problems

A Virtual factory data model as a support tool for the simulation of manufacturing systems

The design of a manufacturing systems is a complex and critical activity entailing decisions with an impact on a long time horizon and a major commitment of financial resources. Indeed, the modelling, simulation and evaluation of manufacturing systems are relevant activities both in the design and the operational phases of a factory. This paper grounds on the results of the Virtual Factory Framework (VFF) Project and addresses the use of an ontology based model of a production system to support the construction of a performance evaluation model

Corporate waqf is still new for the contemporary Islamic studies in Malaysia. There are limited resources and guidance to explain about corporate waqf. The purposes of this study are to explore the issues, concept and development of corporate waqf. Current structure for corporate waqf also being explored as part of case studies. This paper provides several perspectives and suggestions to this issue. The methodology for this study is secondary data approach by using the data analysis from the related journal and paper. The subject for this study is Selangor Muamalat. This paper come out with the concept and development of the contemporary waqf focused on corporate waqf and there are five current issues identified in the contemporary waqf. Next, seven proposed action plans are suggested to cover the issues. Lastly, the structure of Selangor Muamalat is analyses by focusing on the management structure, financial and operational framework and the Shariah consideration towards Selangor Muamalat structure

A methodology for the decomposition of discrete event models for parallel simulation

    Get PDF
Parallel simulation has presented the possibility of performing high-speed simulation. However, when attempting to make a link between the requirements of parallel simulation and discrete event simulation used in commercial areas such as manufacturing, a major problem arises. This lies in the decomposition of the simulation into a series of concurrently executing objects. Using the activity cycle diagram simulation technique as an illustrative example, this paper suggests a solution to this decomposition problem. This is discussed within the context of providing a conceptually seamless methodology for translating simulation models into a form which can exploit the benefits of parallel computing

An opportunity for system dynamics in manufacturing system modelling

    Get PDF
The computer simulation of manufacturing systems is commonly carried out using discrete event simulation (DES). Indeed, there appears to be a lack of applications of continuous simulation methods, particularly system dynamics (SD), despite evidence that this technique is suitable for industrial modelling. This paper investigates whether this is due to a decline in the general popularity of SD, or whether modelling of manufacturing systems represents a missed opportunity for SD. On this basis, the paper first gives a review of the concept of SD and fully describes the modelling technique. Following on, a survey of the published applications of SD in the 1990s is made by developing and using a structured classification approach. From this review, observations are made about the application of the SD method and opportunities for future research are suggested
