Wireless Sensor Networks, referred to as WSNs, are made up of various types of sensor nodes. Recent developments in micro electro-mechanical technology have given rise to new integrated circuitry, microprocessor hardware and nanotechnology, wireless technology, and advanced networking routing protocols. Hospitals and health service facilities, the armed forces, and even residential customers represent a potential huge market for these devices. The problem is that existing sensor network nodes are incapable of providing the support needed to maximize usage of wireless technology. For this reason, there are many novel routing protocols for the wireless sensor networks proposed recently. One is Hierarchical or cluster-based routing. In this paper, we analyze three different types of hierarchical routing protocols: Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH), Power-Efficient Gathering in Sensor Information Systems (PEGASIS), and Virtual Grid Architecture (VGA). We tried to analyze the performance of these protocols, including the power consumption and overall network performance. We also compared the routing protocol together. This comparison reveals the important features that need to be taken into consideration while designing and evaluating new routing protocols for sensor networks. The simulation results, using same limited sensing range value, show that PEGASIS outperforms all other protocols while LEACH has better performance than VGA. Furthermore, the paper investigates the power consumption for all protocols. On the average, VGA has the worst power consumption when the sensing range is limited, while VGA is the best when the sensing range is increased. Using homogeneous nodes can greatly prolong sensor network’s life time. Also, the network lifetime increases as the number of clusters decreases

The aim of this master thesis is the implementation of simulation models and the simulation of energy-efficient network initialization algorithms. First of all, it is presented a survey of state-of-the-art strategies for network initialization and exploration in wireless ad-hoc networks. Among the routing approaches presented in the survey it has been chosen the clustering-based approach due to it is the most suitable for ad-hoc sensor networks. Following are explained the features and properties of the clustering-based routing algorithms that have been selected for their implementation on this work. These implemented routing protocols are LEACH, LEACH-C, the solaraware extensions of both, HEED and a protocol based on direct transmission just as a reference in the comparison among the rest of them. On the other hand, all these routing protocols have been implemented and simulated using the OMNeT++ 4.0, which is a freeware discrete simulation environment. Subsequently, all the protocols have been simulated with different parameters and conditions to prove their functionality and to find out their behaviour in different sorts of sensor networks. Next, the simulations of the algorithms are compared among each other especially in terms of communication and energy efficiency. There are presented different comparisons such as LEACH and LEACH-C with their respective solar-aware extensions of both, a comparison between HEED with optimized parameters and non-optimized parameters, and finally a general comparison among One-hop, LEACH, LEACH-C and HEED. To sum up, some conclusions are drawn about the performance of the different protocols and some key points are given for future work. Furthermore, it is presented a brief study of the environmental impact this work may have

From carbon nanotubes and silicate layers to graphene platelets for polymer nanocomposites

In spite of extensive studies conducted on carbon nanotubes and silicate layers for their polymer-based nanocomposites, the rise of graphene now provides a more promising candidate due to its exceptionally high mechanical performance and electrical and thermal conductivities. The present study developed a facile approach to fabricate epoxy–graphene nanocomposites by thermally expanding a commercial product followed by ultrasonication and solution-compounding with epoxy, and investigated their morphologies, mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and thermal mechanical behaviour. Multihop clustering algorithm for load balancing in wireless sensor networks

    Get PDF
The paper presents a new cluster based routing algorithm that exploits the redundancy properties of the sensor networks in order to address the traditional problem of load balancing and energy efficiency in the WSNs.The algorithm makes use of the nodes in a sensor network of which area coverage is covered by the neighbours of the nodes and mark them as temporary cluster heads. The algorithm then forms two layers of multi hop communication. The bottom layer which involves intra cluster communication and the top layer which involves inter cluster communication involving the temporary cluster heads. Performance studies indicate that the proposed algorithm solves effectively the problem of load balancing and is also more efficient in terms of energy consumption from Leach and the enhanced version of Leach

Performance Analysis of Hierarchical Routing Protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks

This work focusses on analyzing the optimization strategies of routing protocols with respect to energy utilization of sensor nodes in Wireless Sensor Network (WSNs). Different routing mechanisms have been proposed to address energy optimization problem in sensor nodes. Clustering mechanism is one of the popular WSNs routing mechanisms. In this paper, we first address energy limitation constraints with respect to maximizing network life time using linear programming formulation technique. To check the efficiency of different clustering scheme against modeled constraints, we select four cluster based routing protocols; Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH), Threshold Sensitive Energy Efficient sensor Network (TEEN), Stable Election Protocol (SEP), and Distributed Energy Efficient Clustering (DEEC). To validate our mathematical framework, we perform analytical simulations in MATLAB by choosing number of alive nodes, number of dead nodes, number of packets and number of CHs, as performance metrics.Comment: NGWMN with 7th IEEE International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications (BWCCA 2012), Victoria, Canada, 201
