    A Signal processing approach for preprocessing and 3d analysis of airborne small-footprint full waveform lidar data

    The extraction of structural object metrics from a next generation remote sensing modality, namely waveform light detection and ranging (LiDAR), has garnered increasing interest from the remote sensing research community. However, a number of challenges need to be addressed before structural or 3D vegetation modeling can be accomplished. These include proper processing of complex, often off-nadir waveform signals, extraction of relevant waveform parameters that relate to vegetation structure, and from a quantitative modeling perspective, 3D rendering of a vegetation object from LiDAR waveforms. Three corresponding, broad research objectives therefore were addressed in this dissertation. Firstly, the raw incoming LiDAR waveform typically exhibits a stretched, misaligned, and relatively distorted character. A robust signal preprocessing chain for LiDAR waveform calibration, which includes noise reduction, deconvolution, waveform registration, and angular rectification is presented. This preprocessing chain was validated using both simulated waveform data of high fidelity 3D vegetation models, which were derived via the Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) modeling environment and real small-footprint waveform LiDAR data, collected by the Carnegie Airborne Observatory (CAO) in a savanna region of South Africa. Results showed that the preprocessing approach significantly increased our ability to recover the temporal signal resolution, and resulted in improved waveform-based vegetation biomass estimation. Secondly, a model for savanna vegetation biomass was derived using the resultant processed waveform data and by decoding the waveform in terms of feature metrics for woody and herbaceous biomass estimation. The results confirmed that small-footprint waveform LiDAR data have significant potential in the case of this application. Finally, a 3D image clustering-based waveform LiDAR inversion model was developed for 1st order (principal branch level) 3D tree reconstruction in both leaf-off and leaf-on conditions. These outputs not only contribute to the visualization of complex tree structures, but also benefit efforts related to the quantification of vegetation structure for natural resource applications from waveform LiDAR data

    Classification of airborne laser scanning point clouds based on binomial logistic regression analysis

    This article presents a newly developed procedure for the classification of airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds, based on binomial logistic regression analysis. By using a feature space containing a large number of adaptable geometrical parameters, this new procedure can be applied to point clouds covering different types of topography and variable point densities. Besides, the procedure can be adapted to different user requirements. A binomial logistic model is estimated for all a priori defined classes, using a training set of manually classified points. For each point, a value is calculated defining the probability that this point belongs to a certain class. The class with the highest probability will be used for the final point classification. Besides, the use of statistical methods enables a thorough model evaluation by the implementation of well-founded inference criteria. If necessary, the interpretation of these inference analyses also enables the possible definition of more sub-classes. The use of a large number of geometrical parameters is an important advantage of this procedure in comparison with current classification algorithms. It allows more user modifications for the large variety of types of ALS point clouds, while still achieving comparable classification results. It is indeed possible to evaluate parameters as degrees of freedom and remove or add parameters as a function of the type of study area. The performance of this procedure is successfully demonstrated by classifying two different ALS point sets from an urban and a rural area.     Calibration of full-waveform airborne laser scanning data for 3D object segmentation

    Phd ThesisAirborne Laser Scanning (ALS) is a fully commercial technology, which has seen rapid uptake from the photogrammetry and remote sensing community to classify surface features and enhance automatic object recognition and extraction processes. 3D object segmentation is considered as one of the major research topics in the field of laser scanning for feature recognition and object extraction applications. The demand for automatic segmentation has significantly increased with the emergence of full-waveform (FWF) ALS, which potentially offers an unlimited number of return echoes. FWF has shown potential to improve available segmentation and classification techniques through exploiting the additional physical observables which are provided alongside the standard geometric information. However, use of the FWF additional information is not recommended without prior radiometric calibration, taking into consideration all the parameters affecting the backscattered energy. The main focus of this research is to calibrate the additional information from FWF to develop the potential of point clouds for segmentation algorithms. Echo amplitude normalisation as a function of local incidence angle was identified as a particularly critical aspect, and a novel echo amplitude normalisation approach, termed the Robust Surface Normal (RSN) method, has been developed. Following the radar equation, a comprehensive radiometric calibration routine is introduced to account for all variables affecting the backscattered laser signal. Thereafter, a segmentation algorithm is developed, which utilises the raw 3D point clouds to estimate the normal for individual echoes based on the RSN method. The segmentation criterion is selected as the normal vector augmented by the calibrated backscatter signals. The developed segmentation routine aims to fully integrate FWF data to improve feature recognition and 3D object segmentation applications. The routine was tested over various feature types from two datasets with different properties to assess its potential. The results are compared to those delivered through utilizing only geometric information, without the additional FWF radiometric information, to assess performance over existing methods. The results approved the potential of the FWF additional observables to improve segmentation algorithms. The new approach was validated against manual segmentation results, revealing a successful automatic implementation and achieving an accuracy of 82%

    Advances in Waveform and Photon Counting Lidar Processing for Forest Vegetation Applications

    Full waveform (FW) and photon counting LiDAR (PCL) data have garnered greater attention due to increasing data availability, a wealth of information they contain and promising prospects for large scale vegetation mapping. However, many factors such as complex processing steps and scarce non-proprietary tools preclude extensive and practical uses of these data for vegetation characterization. Therefore, the overall goal of this study is to develop algorithms to process FW and PCL data and to explore their potential in real-world applications. Study I explored classical waveform decomposition methods such as the Gaussian decomposition, Richardson–Lucy (RL) deconvolution and a newly introduced optimized Gold deconvolution to process FW LiDAR data. Results demonstrated the advantages of the deconvolution and decomposition method, and the three approaches generated satisfactory results, while the best performances varied when different criteria were used. Built upon Study I, Study II applied the Bayesian non-linear modeling concepts for waveform decomposition and quantified the propagation of error and uncertainty along the processing steps. The performance evaluation and uncertainty analysis at the parameter, derived point cloud and surface model levels showed that the Bayesian decomposition could enhance the credibility of decomposition results in a probabilistic sense to capture the true error of estimates and trace the uncertainty propagation along the processing steps. In study III, we exploited FW LiDAR data to classify tree species through integrating machine learning methods (the Random forests (RF) and Conditional inference forests (CF)) and Bayesian inference method. Results of classification accuracy highlighted that the Bayesian method was a superior alternative to machine learning methods, and rendered users with more confidence for interpreting and applying classification results to real-world tasks such as forest inventory. Study IV focused on developing a framework to derive terrain elevation and vegetation canopy height from test-bed sensor data and to pre-validate the capacity of the upcoming Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) mission. The methodology developed in this study illustrates plausible ways of processing the data that are structurally similar to expected ICESat-2 data and holds the potential to be a benchmark for further method adjustment once genuine ICESat-2 are available

    Airborne LiDAR is one of the most effective and reliable means of terrain data collection. Using LiDAR data for DEM generation is becoming a standard practice in spatial related areas. However, the effective processing of the raw LiDAR data and the generation of an efficient and high-quality DEM remain big challenges. This paper reviews the recent advances of airborne LiDAR systems and the use of LiDAR data for DEM generation, with special focus on LiDAR data filters, interpolation methods, DEM resolution, and LiDAR data reduction. Separating LiDAR points into ground and non-ground is the most critical and difficult step for DEM generation from LiDAR data. Commonly used and most recently developed LiDAR filtering methods are presented. Interpolation methods and choices of suitable interpolator and DEM resolution for LiDAR DEM generation are discussed in detail. In order to reduce the data redundancy and increase the efficiency in terms of storage and manipulation, LiDAR data reduction is required in the process of DEM generation. Feature specific elements such as breaklines contribute significantly to DEM quality. Therefore, data reduction should be conducted in such a way that critical elements are kept while less important elements are removed. Given the highdensity characteristic of LiDAR data, breaklines can be directly extracted from LiDAR data. Extraction of breaklines and integration of the breaklines into DEM generation are presented

    ANALYSIS OF FULL-WAVEFORM LIDAR DATA FOR CLASSIFICATION OF URBAN AREAS

    International audienceIn contrast to conventional airborne multi-echo laser scanner systems, full-waveform (FW) lidar systems are able to record the entire emitted and backscattered signal of each laser pulse. Instead of clouds of individual 3D points, FW devices provide connected 1D profiles of the 3D scene, which contain more detailed and additional information about the structure of the illuminated surfaces. This paper is focused on the analysis of FW data in urban areas. The problem of modelling FW lidar signals is first tackled. The standard method assumes the waveform to be the superposition of signal contributions of each scattering object in such a laser beam, which are approximated by Gaussian distributions. This model is suitable in many cases, especially in vegetated terrain. However, since it is not tailored to urban waveforms, the generalized Gaussian model is selected instead here. Then, a pattern recognition method for urban area classification is proposed. A supervised method using Support Vector Machines is performed on the FW point cloud based on the parameters extracted from the post-processing step. Results show that it is possible to partition urban areas in building, vegetation, natural ground and artificial ground regions with high accuracy using only lidar waveforms
