Assortment planning, space assignment and shelf location model
Introduction: Retailer鈥檚 operational decisions imply that through its assortment the demand can be satisfied achieving the highest possible profit making the best possible use of its exhibition space. This article presents a mixed integer linear programming model which main purpose is to maximize the profit of a retailer considering the effects of substitution between the items, space elasticity, service levels and buyer鈥檚 decisions.
Objective: To propose a decision model for space allocation, assortment planning and shelf location for a retailer.
Method: First different factors that affect the decisions under study are analyzed using primary and secondary sources. Then the formulation of the model is proposed and its performance is evaluated using real data from a product category at a retailer鈥檚 point of sale.
Results: For the test instance, the optimal solution was obtained in a reasonable computational time and the solution presents the best way to manage the assortment at the point of sale, improving the results of the current method.
Conclusions: The proposed model allows increasing the profitability of the chain through the selection of the appropriate assortment, with fair exhibition spaces and suggesting the exact location of the items.

productoIn the retail sector, inventory allocation implies a dynamic challenge since it is
necessary to adopt policies that consider the market fluctuating demand and the consumer behavior
variability, depending on their geographical location. An inappropriate inventory distribution
directly transcends sales levels, the cost of maintaining high inventory levels, and the transfer
logistics cost of between stores due to the incomplete availability of products. In this research work
an algorithmic model that calculates the best assortment for each store of a retail company in the
motorcycle sector is developed. The proposed solution is based on prioritization methods and
weighting of external and internal historical variables and marketing variables in order to obtain
the ideal set of products. The model has been developed in Visual Basic programming language
for its flexibility in variable parameterization combined with easy implementation and interactivity
with databases. The results show that inventory turnover indicator increase significantly from the
application of the model, which shows that a correct inventory allocation can increase the profits
of the retailer. The strength of the proposed system is that it allows the parameterization of input
variables according to the commercial needs of the retail owner; because one of the main limitations
of the existing literature is that it neglects marketing rules and does not address the strategic
importance of the productIngeniero IndustrialCuenc
Shelf space re-allocation for out of stock reduction
An ILP formulation is proposed for Shelf space re-allocation problem.Out-of-stock data are collected from the Shelf Detector System in real time.Space elastic demand function is linked with real-time statistical data.Tests performed on real, random and large instances. A planogram is a detailed visual map that establishes product positions over a shelf in a retail store. It is designed to support an innovative merchandising approach, to increase sales and profits, to supply the best location of a product for suppliers and to better manage the shelves. Product selection and the shelf space reserved to each product is a central activity for retailers and Shelf Out of Stock (SOOS) events are often strongly related to planogram design. In this paper we present a solution to optimally re-allocate shelf space to minimize Out of Stock (OOS) events. The approach uses SOOS data coming in real time from a sensor network technology, named Shelf Detector System, and an Integer Linear Programming model that integrates a space elastic demand function. Experimental results, based on a real scenario in the diaper category in Belgium, have proved that the system can efficiently calculate a proper solution able to re-allocate space and reduce OOS events
