Integrating Systems and Economic Models for Security Investments in the Presence of Dynamic Stochastic Shocks
Organizations deploy a number of security measures with differing intensities to protect their companyâs information assets. These assets are found in various location within a company, with differing levels of security applied to them. Such measures protect the different aspects of the organizationâs information systems, which are typically separated into three different attributes; confidentiality, integrity, and availability. We start by defining a system in terms of its locations, resources and processes to use as an underlying framework for our security model. We then systematically define the time evolution of all the three attributes when subjected to shocks aiming at degrading the systemâs capacity. We shock each of the attributes of the system and trace the adjustment of the attributes and policy responses; we undertake this exercise for different types of organizations: a military weapons system operator, a financial firm or bank, a retail organization, and a medical research organization, producing their impulse-response functions to quantify their responses and speed of adjustment. This economic model is validated through various means, including Monte Carlo simulations. We find that organizations, although they react in similar ways to shocks to their attributes over time, and are able quickly to get back to their pre-shock states over time, differ in the intensity of their policy responses which differ depending upon the character of the organization
Trust and Reputation in Multi-Agent Systems
Multi-Agent systems (MAS) are artificial societies populated with
distributed autonomous agents that are intelligent and rational.
These self-independent agents are capable of independent decision
making towards their predefined goals. These goals might be common
between agents or unique for an agent. Agents may cooperate with
one another to facilitate their progresses. One of the fundamental
challenges in such settings is that agents do not have a full
knowledge over the environment and regarding their decision making
processes, they might need to request other agents for a piece of
information or service. The crucial issues are then how to rely on
the information provided by other agents, how to consider the
collected data, and how to select appropriate agents to ask for
the required information. There are some proposals addressing how
an agent can rely on other agents and how an agent can compute the
overall opinion about a particular agent. In this context, the
trust value reflects the extent to which agents can rely on other
agents and the reputation value represents public opinion about a
particular agent. Existing approaches for reliable information
propagation fail to capture the dynamic relationships between
agents and their influence on further decision making process.
Therefore, these models fail to adapt agents to frequent
environment changes. In general, a well-founded trust and
reputation system that prevents malicious acts that are emerged by
selfish agents is required for multi-agent systems. We propose a
trust mechanism that measures and analyzes the reliability of
agents cooperating with one another. This mechanism concentrates
on the key attributes of the related agents and their
relationships. We also measure and analyze the public reputation
of agents in large-scale environments utilizing a sound reputation
mechanism. In this mechanism, we aim at maintaining a public
reputation assessment in which the public actions of agents are
accurately under analysis. On top of the theoretical analysis, we
experimentally validate our trust and reputation approaches
through different simulations. Our preliminary results show that
our approach outperforms current frameworks in providing accurate
credibility measurements and maintaining accurate trust and
reputation mechanisms

The Apollo spacecraft: A chronology volume 4, 21 January 1966 - 13 July 1974
This final volume of the chronology is divided into three parts: (1) preparation for flight, the accident, and investigation; (2) recovery, spacecraft redefinition, and the first manned flight; and (3) man circles the moon, the Eagle lands, and manned space exploration. Congressional documents, official correspondence, government and contractor reports, memoranda, working papers, and minutes of meetings were used as primary sources. A relatively few entries are based on press releases and newspaper and magazine articles
The new aural actuality: an exploration of music, sound and meaning in the composed feature documentary podcast
This practice-led thesis explores the creative techniques and philosophies used in composing feature documentary podcasts and how listeners engage with the material and make meaning from it. Podcasting as a medium presents a new and so far unexplored way of interfacing with audio documentary and this study works to demonstrate crucial differences from radio practice in terms of intention and expression, how material is made, consideration for its audience, and how its programmes are distributed. Using post-structural theory, specifically Deleuze and Guattariâs ideas on interconnected networks of affective transmission, podcastingâs relationship to radio is explored, as is how listeners make meaning through their interaction with both the heard material and the devices upon which it is accessed. These theories are then applied to the characteristically open remit of the audio documentary to study how speech, music, sound and silence may be understood to generate meaning, emotion and a sense of immersion in the listener. It is suggested that modes of programme access, listening customs, and interpretational symbolism work together to impart information vital to the ability to connote and denote what is being heard, and that in this way the composed feature can be situated very closely to musical practice and engagement. Taking cues from musical and cinematic analytical practice three podcast programmes are closely scrutinised for an understanding of their constituent material, structural shape, and potential affective transmissions, beforeinterviewswith their producers are presented to discuss conceptual intentions and execution. Six programmes are presented as the practice component of the thesis, each made to experiment with and reflect upon different aspects of creative or listening practice, with conclusions drawn concerning their implications and effectiveness
Graphs behind data: A network-based approach to model different scenarios
âNowadays, the amount and variety of scenarios that can benefit from techniques for extracting and managing knowledge from raw data have dramatically increased. As a result, the search for models capable of ensuring the representation and management of highly heterogeneous data is a hot topic in the data science literature. In this thesis, we aim to propose a solution to address this issue. In particular, we believe that graphs, and more specifically complex networks, as well as the concepts and approaches associated with them, can represent a solution to the problem mentioned above. In fact, we believe that they can be a unique and unifying model to uniformly represent and handle extremely heterogeneous data. Based on this premise, we show how the same concepts and/or approach has the potential to address different open issues in different contexts. âINGEGNERIA DELL'INFORMAZIONEopenVirgili, Luc
