    A Survey of Surface Reconstruction from Point Clouds

    International audienceThe area of surface reconstruction has seen substantial progress in the past two decades. The traditional problem addressed by surface reconstruction is to recover the digital representation of a physical shape that has been scanned, where the scanned data contains a wide variety of defects. While much of the earlier work has been focused on reconstructing a piece-wise smooth representation of the original shape, recent work has taken on more specialized priors to address significantly challenging data imperfections, where the reconstruction can take on different representations – not necessarily the explicit geometry. We survey the field of surface reconstruction, and provide a categorization with respect to priors, data imperfections, and reconstruction output. By considering a holistic view of surface reconstruction, we show a detailed characterization of the field, highlight similarities between diverse reconstruction techniques, and provide directions for future work in surface reconstruction

    Accurate automatic localization of surfaces of revolution for self-calibration and metric reconstruction

    In this paper, we address the problem of the automatic metric reconstruction Surface of Revolution (SOR) from a single uncalibrated view. The apparent contour and the visible portions of the imaged SOR cross sections are extracted and classified. The harmonic homology that models the image projection of the SOR is also estimated. The special care devoted to accuracy and robustness with respect to outliers makes the approach suitable for automatic camera calibration and metric reconstruction from single uncalibrated views of a SOR. Robustness and accuracy are obtained by embedding a graph-based grouping strategy (Euclidean Minimum Spanning Tree) into an Iterative Closest Point framework for projective curve alignment at multiple scales. Classification of SOR curves is achieved through a 2-dof voting scheme based on a pencil of conics novel parametrization. The main contribution of this work is to extend the domain of automatic single view reconstruction from piecewise planar scenes to scenes including curved surfaces, thus allowing to create automatically realistic image models of man-made objects. Experimental results with real images taken from the internet are reported, and the effectiveness and limitations of the approach are discussed

    3D Reconstruction of Building Rooftop and Power Line Models in Right-of-Ways Using Airborne LiDAR Data

    The research objectives aimed to achieve thorough the thesis are to develop methods for reconstructing models of building and PL objects of interest in the power line (PL) corridor area from airborne LiDAR data. For this, it is mainly concerned with the model selection problem for which model is more optimal in representing the given data set. This means that the parametric relations and geometry of object shapes are unknowns and optimally determined by the verification of hypothetical models. Therefore, the proposed method achieves high adaptability to the complex geometric forms of building and PL objects. For the building modeling, the method of implicit geometric regularization is proposed to rectify noisy building outline vectors which are due to noisy data. A cost function for the regularization process is designed based on Minimum Description Length (MDL) theory, which favours smaller deviation between a model and observation as well as orthogonal and parallel properties between polylines. Next, a new approach, called Piecewise Model Growing (PMG), is proposed for 3D PL model reconstruction using a catenary curve model. It piece-wisely grows to capture all PL points of interest and thus produces a full PL 3D model. However, the proposed method is limited to the PL scene complexity, which causes PL modeling errors such as partial, under- and over-modeling errors. To correct the incompletion of PL models, the inner and across span analysis are carried out, which leads to replace erroneous PL segments by precise PL models. The inner span analysis is performed based on the MDL theory to correct under- and over-modeling errors. The across span analysis is subsequently carried out to correct partial-modeling errors by finding start and end positions of PLs which denotes Point Of Attachment (POA). As a result, this thesis addresses not only geometrically describing building and PL objects but also dealing with noisy data which causes the incompletion of models. In the practical aspects, the results of building and PL modeling should be essential to effectively analyze a PL scene and quickly alleviate the potentially hazardous scenarios jeopardizing the PL system

    LOD Generation for Urban Scenes

    International audienceWe introduce a novel approach that reconstructs 3D urban scenes in the form of levels of detail (LODs). Starting from raw data sets such as surface meshes generated by multi-view stereo systems, our algorithm proceeds in three main steps: classification, abstraction and reconstruction. From geometric attributes and a set of semantic rules combined with a Markov random field, we classify the scene into four meaningful classes. The abstraction step detects and regularizes planar structures on buildings, fits icons on trees, roofs and facades, and performs filtering and simplification for LOD generation. The abstracted data are then provided as input to the reconstruction step which generates watertight buildings through a min-cut formula-tion on a set of 3D arrangements. Our experiments on complex buildings and large scale urban scenes show that our approach generates meaningful LODs while being robust and scalable. By combining semantic segmentation and abstraction it also outperforms general mesh approximation ap-proaches at preserving urban structures

    Simplification of 2D Polygonal Partitions via Point‐line Projective Duality, and Application to Urban Reconstruction

    International audienceWe address the problem of simplifying two-dimensional polygonal partitions that exhibit strong regularities. Such partitions are relevant for reconstructing urban scenes in a concise way. Preserving long linear structures spanning several partition cells motivates a point-line projective duality approach in which points represent line intersections, and lines possibly carry multiple points. We propose a simplification algorithm that seeks a balance between the fidelity to the input partition, the enforcement of canonical relationships between lines (orthogonality or parallelism) and a low complexity output. Our methodology alternates continuous optimization by Riemannian gradient descent with combinatorial reduction, resulting in a progressive simplification scheme. Our experiments show that preserving canonical relationships helps gracefully degrade partitions of urban scenes, and yields more concise and regularity-preserving meshes than common mesh-based simplification approaches

    3D functional models of monkey brain through elastic registration of histological sections

    In this paper we describe a method for the reconstruction and visualization of functional models of monkey brains. Models are built through the registration of high resolution images obtained from the scanning of histological sections with reference photos taken during the brain slicing. From the histological sections it is also possible to acquire specifically activated neuron coordinates introducing functional information in the model. Due to the specific nature of the images (texture information is useless and the sections could be deformed when they were cut and placed on glass) we solved the registration problem by extracting corresponding cerebral cortex borders (extracted with a snake algorithm), and computing from their deformation an image transform modeled as an affine deformation plus a non-linear field evaluated as an elastically constrained deformation minimizing contour distances. Registered images and contours are used then to build 3D models of specific brains by a software tool allowing the interactive visualization of cortical volumes together with the spatially referenced neurons classified and differently colored according to their functionalities

    Improving architectural 3D reconstruction by constrained modelling

    Institute of Perception, Action and BehaviourThis doctoral thesis presents new techniques for improving the structural quality of automatically-acquired architectural 3D models. Common architectural properties such as parallelism and orthogonality of walls and linear structures are exploited. The locations of features such as planes and 3D lines are extracted from the model by using a probabilistic technique (RANSAC). The relationships between the planes and lines are inferred automatically using a knowledge-based architectural model. A numerical algorithm is then used to optimise the position and orientations of the features taking constraints into account. Small irregularities in the model are removed by projecting the irregularities onto the features. Planes and lines in the resulting model are therefore aligned properly to each other, and so the appearance of the resulting model is improved. Our approach is demonstrated using noisy data from both synthetic and real scenes
